Ron McLarty can do no wrong as he spins this exciting, sometimes harrowing, story of two young brothers, Roland and Thomas. Orphaned, they long to escape the clutches of the awful and frightening Madame Vickers, who runs The House on the Hill. Roland, the younger brother, narrates the story as an adult looking back on his childhood. Each character is brought to life with a unique voice, and McLarty is particularly accomplished at capturing the female characters. He sends a chill down ones spine whenever Madame Vickers arrives on the scene. The production itself is not burdened by music or other distractions. Its simplicity allows one to be swept up in the action as McLarty works his magic. B.H. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Fine Prequel / Sequel to Great Series!
By Tinkertestify
I write in reply mostly to those who have reported a quality dropoff between the first 3 books (Dark Hills Divide, Beyond the Valley of Thorns and The Tenth City) and this prequel/sequel "Into the Mist". This book has a male narrator but it absolutely ROCKS - he is just as good as the female narrator of the first 3 books. It's a little unusual in that it continues beyond The Tenth City while mostly engaging in a long historical narrative of the early days of Thomas and Roland Worvald well prior to Dark Hills Divide. But WHAT a story / adventure they have! At least as thrilling, suspenseful and varied in its characters, environments, dangers, suspense and mystery as any of the others. It was wonderful - we listened to the CD version on a cross-crounty trip - we were enrapt and hanging on the masterful development of each scene. And it was completely appropriate for our 6 and 8 year old girls - no content whatsoever relating in any way to any of the typical modern affronts (sex, gore, profanity). And it was nice to see the author pull back from the precipice of religious proselytizing on which he was cavalierly dancing at the end of The Tenth City. Pure fun, completely appropriate for all ages, 2 big thums up!!! We loved it and highly recommend the book and the CD version to any who have enjoyed any of the others in this series!

#1 of a new trilogy
By Armchair Interviews
Into the Mist by Patrick Carman is the beginning of a new trilogy by this author based in Elyon. It picks up just a few days after the close of the last trilogy, but the author goes to great lengths to set the context for the story. I haven't read the earlier books, but I still enjoyed this one.
The story is a mix of the present day and reminiscence of the past. Alexa Daley is on a ship captained by Roland Warvold heading for some unknown destination. She convinces the captain to say where they are going, but to do that, the captain must tell the story of how he became captain of the Warwick Beacon.
The story begins with Roland and his brother Thomas in an orphanage where they mine a garbage dump for treasures for the owner of the house where they and the other orphans live. Something they find sends them off on an adventure to learn who they are and what their place in the world will be. They travel back and forth across their world following mysterious clues left for them.
Into the Mist is a well-written and enjoyable story. There are interesting characters and exciting discoveries. The chapters weave back and forth from past to present, but not in manner that is confusing for the reader. For those who have read the first Elyon trilogy, this book will reveal the history of two of the principal characters. For those who are entering Elyon for the first time, this is a delightful introduction to that magical world.
I was captivated by this story and plan to read the earlier trilogy, and to follow along with this second trilogy. Into the Mist is a to be book enjoyed by younger and older readers alike.
Armchair Interviews says: The author's web site is well worth checking out for the artwork and excerpts from his other books.
