Predictable plot, stereotyped characters and negative messages

I have been reading this with an elementary student that I mentor. I wish that he had chosen a different book. The plot is boring and the characters are stereotypes. The prissy girl Chloe is particularly annoying and offensive.
I was really turned off by the chapter we read today. Freddy irresponsibly forgot to tell his mother that he was supposed to wear his red shirt for the Olympics. He got into a fight with his sister and called her "Princess Poopyhead." Then he conspired with her to lie to their mother about wearing a dirty shirt to school. His clueless mother was taken in by their boldfaced lying.
Children deserve the best. This is not it.

My first grader loves these books. I bought three for less than I could at Barnes and Nobles as a Christmas set. He couldn't get enough of them.
