From The Cruisers: Checkmate
"Hey, Big Sid, how you doing?"
"I've done better," was the answer.
"I heard you had a little trouble," I said.
"Zander... Zander... the cops said I was facing Juvenile and then State," he said. I could hear him crying.
"What's that mean?"
"It means I could go to juvenile jail until i'm eighteen and then get switched to a regular prison," he said. "God, man, I'm really scared. I'm really scared. I didn't think any of this would happen. I really didn't."
"Sidney, you have friends, dude."
"You think I can get off?"
"Yeah, look, The Cruisers are having a meeting and we'd like to invite you."
"Other people know about this?"
"Sort of... but that's good," I said, thinking as fast as I cold. "The important thing is to get you out of trouble. Do your parents know?"
"Yeah."
"Oh."
"They went to send me to Europe or Siberia or whatever."

Sindey is the best chess player in the school
By hate it
“Why would you even start drugs in the first place?”
The book tells the story of a kid named Sidney who is a seventh grader at Da Vinci Middle School. Sindey is the best chess player in the school, but gets involved with drugs through a local dealer. Everyone thinks that Sindey is a good kid, but become very shocked when he is arrested for buying drugs. A group of friends, who call themselves The Cruisers, try to help. They talk to Sidney but he starts doing drugs again because the pressure of being one of the brightest kids and best chess players is too much. Sidney’s friends go to a cop to take him to a Scared Straight program. So now we wait to find out if Sidney chooses drugs or school and chess?
Sidney: One of the best chess players in the country and smartest kids in his school. He gets started with drugs to help him cope. Sidney is a very nice kid who sticks up for what he believes in no matter what the cost.
Mr. Culpeper: Assistant Principal at a school called Da Vinci. Very mean attitude.
Noah: Main character: Very nice. Seventh grade. Try’s to help Sidney.
Zander: One of Sindey’s friends. He is very unreasonable and does not usually do stuff out of the kindness of his heart.
Don’t do something bad just because it makes you feel good. It’s the theme because one of the top chess players in U.S. ruins his life with drugs. I think this a good theme because it teaches young children to do the right thing and never to try or do drugs. The story shows how doing drugs not on affects you, but it also affects everyone around you.
I think this is a good book. It kept me wondering what was going to happen to Sidney and what choice he was going to make. I would recommend it to anyone who is young to teach them to never do drugs.

A thoughtful novel about the perils and pressures facing gifted middle-school students
By KidsReads
Harlem's Da Vinci Academy for the Gifted and Talented is a school for exceptionally bright kids. English is Alexander "Zander" Scott's thing. The eighth-grade student has a way with words and hopes to be a writer some day. With his parents divorced, he lives in Harlem with his beautiful mom, who scrapes by making a living as a model.
Zander and his friends call themselves the Cruisers. His best friend, Kambui, has a laid-back approach to grades, just like Zander. Photography is Kambui's passion. One day he hopes to travel the world taking photographs that will change people's lives. Outspoken La Shonda is an amazing clothing designer who loves to sew. Barbara "Bobbi" is a whiz with numbers and statistics, which comes in handy for the Cruisers' Independent Study Project. Bobbi also plays second boards on the school's chess team.
While each of the Cruisers is extremely talented, their just-get-by attitude towards grades gives the impression that they are not living up to their potential. They are, however, bright and articulate, and skilled at influencing other students. At Da Vinci, students are encouraged to join groups and make a difference. Zander and his friends rise to the occasion by coming up with an alternative school newspaper, The Cruiser, where they express unconventional points of view to counterbalance the school's official newspaper.
Sidney Aronofksy isn't one of the Cruisers, but he and Zander have a history. In the past, he stood up for Zander against bullies. Since then, they've been friends and had each other's backs. Sidney is a top-rated chess player, the last person Zander thinks would be involved in drugs. After Sidney is arrested for trying to buy illegal drugs, the Da Vinci assistant principal asks the Cruisers to talk to him. Even after Zander's policeman uncle takes Sidney and the rest of the Cruisers on a ride they most likely will never forget, the pressure of being a master chess player takes its toll. The Cruisers must use their imagination, intelligence and collective resources to keep Sidney from spiraling out of control.
In CHECKMATE, the second book in the Cruisers series, Walter Dean Myers has created another thoughtful novel about the perils and pressures facing gifted middle-grade students. He uses a deft touch and a conversational tone to connect with his readers, but does not shy away from timely social issues, including drugs, media bias, subtle racism, child abuse and the pressure to excel.
Zander and the Cruisers show how important loyalty and friendship are when the pressure to excel becomes more than one can handle. The serious subject of drug use by middle-school students is center stage, but is lightened by the touches of humor about the budding romance between Zander and Caren --- a seventh-grade girl who likes to shade the truth.
