Her solution is differentiated small-group reading lessons, in which students are grouped by reading goals instead of reading levels, allowing more focused instruction. In this highly practical, research-based guide, Southall demonstrates how to determine what reading goals students are working on, how to form groups based on these goals, and how to select lessons for the groups. She includes 'When/Then' charts that describe common student difficulties and links them to the appropriate lesson. Margo Southall has more than 25 years of experience as a classroom teacher, special education resource teacher, reading specialist and literacy coach. She now works as an educational consultant with school districts across the United States and Canada, helping teachers develop highly effective, differentiated literacy programs. Her special interests focus on designing intervention programs for struggling readers, developing frameworks for differentiated instruction in the classroom, and supporting literacy coaches in their work with teachers and students.

Must Have Book

I purchased this book because I am new to teaching first grade this year. I needed skill lessons and was not sure of how to meet all of my students' needs. This book is SO AMAZING!! It breaks it down into mini lessons, by skill and lists many common reading scenarios that ss strugle with. It also includes many useful mini-lessons, posters, bookmarks and more. I love the fact that the posters and bookmarks have rebus pictures to help them create mental anchors and remember the skills. I would recommend this book, it is a must have for me and the more I read and use it the more I love it.

I teach 2nd grade and this book was very helpful to me. It explains clearly and simply (but still has sufficient details) a variety of learning difficulties in reading and provides specific suggestions for lessons to address these issues.
