A well-written, fast-paced enjoyable page-turner

Gordon Korman has been around for what? 30 years at least and the guy still knows how to write. SWINDLE comes across like an OCEAN'S ELEVEN or MISSION IMPOSSIBLE for kids.

Griffin Bing is "The Man with a Plan," and his plans are often huge. The book starts off with Griffin's plan to spend a night with a bunch of his classmates in a creaky, old, rumored-to-be-haunted, ready-to-be-torn-down house, a plan that doesn't exactly come off with a bang. At least not the one he intended. The only person to show up is Ben Slovak, the runt of the sixth grade and Griffin's best friend. The first part of the book is intended to draw in youthful readers with gory tales and details of gruesome events that allegedly took place in the house. It works. I've read a few negative comments that the author endorses lying to one's parents and like sentiments. Korman doesn't endorse such behavior; he uses it to create characters. The book is not intended to be hagiography. Find me a child who's never lied to his/her parents. Find me a parent who's never lied to her/his child. Santa Claus, anyone?

Anyway, without giving much of the plot away, Griffin finds something quite valuable in the house, but is quickly swindled out of it by a slimy "antiquities" dealer. So Griffin has to concoct another scheme to get his treasure back. Kudos to Korman for his pacing. With a hundred pages to go, the master plan is already being implemented. "How's he going to stretch this thing out that far?" I wondered. But he does, with surprises, twists, screwups, and backstabbings that pop up at breakneck speed throughout the long, climactic event.

Of course, much of the overall premise is ludicrous, if you're going to get technical. Everything is timed to the second; missteps can be corrected within two pages, a bad guy's hands are within inches of a treasure right as the good guys steal it away with a Batman or James Bond like device. Real life isn't like this. But this is not written as a realistic crime thriller. It's written for kids and the main thing that will attract them is the fast-paced action in which kids outwit adults. Any of your typical bank heist movies could use whizzes like these. And in the end, good triumphs over evil, Griffin saves the day (though inadvertently), and kids have devoured an entertaining read.

I did have some problems keeping all the characters apart at times, but Korman helps by assigning one or two distinctive traits/talents to each character, kind of like a baseball scorecard might assign positions to players. One girl is the climbing expert, another is an "animal whisperer," another has narcolepsy, etc. I also commend him for salting the early part of the story with details that will become important later on.

So SWINDLE may not be chock full of vitamins for kids, but it is a very enjoyable bowl of popcorn, perfectly seasoned. If I had this book in sixth grade, I would have loved it.

I love this book for kids to read

I love this book for kids to read. I love this book for me to read! This book conjures up memories of the old "Hardy Boys" series where relationships and friendships were an important part of growing up. In an age where kids today interact more through social media then face-to-face contact, this book brings you back to the basics of friendship and family. The loyalty that Ben Slovak has for his friend and main character Griffin Bing, aka "The man with the Plan", is admirable. The plan that Griffin puts together to right the wrong that was done to him by an adult store owner is ingenious. Of course, keep in mind that this is a fiction/adventure story and you must take the leap of faith and enjoy the ride. Griffins understanding that, in order to carry out his rather elaborate plan, it would require a very special team. From his school acquaintances, he recruits the proper people for the jobs at hand; a "dog whisperer", a rock claiming expert and I especially liked the way he includes a high-tech, loner nerd girl. Her involvement was the first time she was ever a part of a team and this established a level of confidence and acceptance that she had never experienced before.
Please remember that this is a fiction/adventure story and I do not advocate kids planning and carrying out major heists. But this book teaches the value of friendship, planning, team work and follow through of a plan as a valuable life lesson. Besides that, it was fun to read.

ONE OF THE FEW BOOKS THAT REALLY GETS WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE A KID, MOSTLY

Unlike one reviewer, I do believe that kids are capable of intelligent thought, especially since I am one. So if you are an adult who doesn't think kids can justify "he really didn't know where it was because he mailed it" I think that you are wrong. It was a great book and it was very entertaining. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good read. Griffin Bing is a genius, and it really shows off how completely different people can be really good friends even if one really hates the plans

The Underlying Message of Teamwork, Loyalty and Courage Will Resonate with Middle-Grade Readers --- and their Parents

When a beautiful woman seeks help discovering what caused her aunt's sudden death during a séance, the Baker Street Irregulars are once again summoned to 221B Baker Street, home of the legendary master detective Sherlock Holmes.

Holmes summons the Irregulars, a band of 12 clever and resourceful orphan boys, because of their ability to blend in with any environment and adapt to any circumstance. The famous and easily recognizable Holmes hires them to note the comings and goings of visitors to the mansion where the deadly séance was held.

The Baker Street Irregulars, particularly Wiggins and Ozzie, are developing into strong, unique and appealing characters. Shirley, Wiggins's brave and loyal ferret, is also taking on an important role. Pilar, a familiar character in the first book, makes a repeat appearance. She and her mother, Madame Estrella, are called upon to play a part in solving the crime.

The compelling subplot of Ozzie trying to locate his Great-Aunt Agatha so he can find out the identity of his father has captured my curiosity. Clues and subtle hints give rise to speculation, but it will be interesting to find out if Ozzie is successful in his quest. The playful voice of the narrator at the beginning of the book is appealing. His (or her) identity is also an intriguing demi-mystery.

As with the first book in the series, the unusual setting, an engaging cast of young and likable characters, quirky dialogue and a skillfully woven plot make for great reading fun. It is clear that Tracy Mack and Michael Citrin have done their research because the historical details and witty dialogue pop.

Once again, the section at the back of the book, "Facts and Practicals for the Aspiring Detective," contains useful tools to help readers become acquainted with historic facts and Victorian-era dialect. Notably, they should have fun reading about "The Art of Disguise" and "Medium Con Artists." I know I did.

Because of the emerging and distinct voices of the Irregulars, along with the familiar deductions of the famous master detective Sherlock Holmes, I found THE MYSTERY OF THE CONJURED MAN a thoroughly enjoyable book. The engaging mystery, interesting subject matter and setting, and underlying message of teamwork, loyalty and courage should resonate with middle-grade readers --- and their parents.

The legendary Sherlock Holmes becomes a secondary character in this series...

“Though Watson was a loyal companion, he could hardly be considered skilled in the science of deduction. Still, up until now, he has taken credit for assisting the master detective and failed to recognize those who helped most.” The legendary Sherlock Holmes becomes a secondary character in this series about a ragtag group of street orphans, the Baker Street Irregulars, who help him solve cases. This is the second book in the series, but it can be read as a stand-alone thanks to a brief prologue that sets up the concept. Ozzie, Wiggins, and the rest of the boys are called to investigate when a woman’s aunt dies suddenly and mysteriously during a seance with a famous teenage medium. The orphans encounter adventure and danger as they try to find out if the psychic boy has true supernatural powers or if it’s all just tricks. Mack and Citrin make references to details that true Holmes fans will appreciate, which may lead interested readers to look into the original stories. One thing that some kids might get stuck on is the Cockney slang used in the book. There is a selective glossary in the back of the book, as well as a few other extras, but the ARC version I read didn’t have anything pointing readers to these things. Still, it’s an exciting page-turner with a fresh spin on Sherlock Holmes, and the fact that the main characters are kids is a great hook to introduce a new generation to the famed detective.

Sherlock Holmes casebook #3-A review

Detective novels have changed greatly over the years and Shelock Holmes was developed more than a hundred years ago. A present day revival does not agree with the standards used by Arthur Conan Doyle and casebook three is not about Holmes but chronicles the Baker Street Irregulars with Holmes and Watson only appearing when necessary as minor characters. This saves the book, dispenses with the need to show Holmes deductive abilities and allows some history and appearances of London to appear but again only slightly, not in the detail customary with Doyle but with the present usage of short attention span on each description. Action is what is wanted and that is what this story pressnts. Moriarty is presented as the antagonist and also appears but rarely yet is well enough developed for the story to continue. Suspense occurs with the capture of elements of the Irregulars, capture and escape seems to be the plot with a successful conclusion.

Booth, a writing consultant for the NYC Housing Authority, clearly understands how teens living on
the edge–in shelters, in projects, on the street–live, talk and survive. It's the slick street language of
these tough but lovable characters and her gritty landscapes that will capture the interests of urban
fiction fans. While the complex party-planning plotline doesn't exactly cut a straight path, its
convoluted-ness undoubtedly illustrates the kinds of obstacles these teens must overcome and the

Coe Booth's first novel, TYRELL, is a masterfully written, gritty reality check of urban life through the eyes of a heavily burdened fifteen-year-old. After his father is sentenced to prison (for the third time), it is up to Tyrell Green to take care of both his deranged mother and his seven-year-old brother, Troy. But Tyrell is only fifteen! Not only is he living in a completely run-down shelter, but he is broke, out of school, and struggling for some way to earn money to get his mom and brother out of shelter care and into an apartment of their own.

In a place like the Bronx, it is easy for young adults to get caught up in a life of crime. Tyrell knows this, but is also a man of principle (for the most part, at least). Refusing to earn his quick buck through such shady sources as drug dealing, he originates a plan to get the money he needs to get things back to the way they were. The question of whether it will work, or whether it will blow up in his face....you'll have to read TYRELL to find out (but it's worth it!)

The great thing about TYRELL is that Coe Booth keeps the pressure on at all times. Real life drama is quilted into the novel until the very end, and it is both humbling and very entertaining to read. She also incorporates real urban vernacular (e.g. "slang") to create an extremely real and convincing narrative.

Coe Booth creates an atmosphere so believable it's impossible not to walk away after reading the novel and not have taken something with you. The characters experience the lowest of lows, the highest of highs, and everything in-between throughout the course of the story--and it doesn't stop until the very end. Dripping from head to toe with sharp turns and very surprising climaxes, it's sure to keep you consumed until the last page.

It's a lot to pack into a story, but Booth does it gracefully and with extraordinary skill. I praise Ms. Booth's first novel and am waiting anxiously for the next.

Plus, she's a PUSH novelist, and it doesn't get much better than PUSH!

My tenth grader wouldn't put it down!

I purchased this book for my son. He read the first page and wouldn't put it down. He finished it in two days and even read it while snacking at the table. Clearly an absorbing story, I highly recommend this book for your teenaged boy, especially those who have trouble finding an engaging read.

Slightly adult content but okay for older teens.

Tyrell is basically a good kid, but at 15 years old has to deal with some adult responsibilities. His father is in jail and his mother is completely worthless, so Tyrell is the only hope his younger brother has for a decent life. When they get evicted, the family is placed in a roach-infested motel until more suitable housing becomes available. Tyrell's mother takes no responsibility for her own children, and even goes so far as to expect Tyrell to deal drugs in order to make enough money to support the family. Tyrell is determined not to end up in jail like his dad, and comes up with his own money making scheme. Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Novisha, and another homeless teen, Jasmine, send a few more challenges his way.

I didn't love this book, but it was extremely popular in my classroom, even with reluctant readers.

Drug use, language, and sexual situations make it more appropriate for mature readers.

Help for Classroom Managemnet

The book Classroom Management written by Jim Burke is and excellent resource for all teachers. This book gives much needed information about classroom management. The information is clear and concise, covering all areas of classroom management. I applied the information in this book to my classromm and the results have been very good. This is a book that is a must for new teachers. I highly reccommend this book to all teachers

Not My Favorite

I am usually a fan of Burke, but I wasn't really that into this one. I bought it because I was having a really, really tough time last year, and I realized how DESPERATELY I need(ed) to improve my management.

I didn't find the book to be detailed enough, and it didn't have the advice I needed: How to change a tough class around when it's already half way through the year. (Maybe nobody has that advice).

I would recommend "The First Days of School" by Wong for more detailed, more specific advice about classroom management. For teachers having a tough year, especially a tough first year, I would recommend Burke's "Letters to a New Teacher" for its model of self-reflection

Good Friend for a Teacher

In "Classroom Management", author Jim Burke seeks to give a guide to tools for building a smooth-running classroom community where learning flourishes. The book covers four major areas, Your Classroom, Effective Instruction, Learning for All and Positive Discipline. It also includes a section on Troubleshooting. Its overall look at classroom control can help the new teacher as well as being a refresher for the experienced teacher. Its format makes it perfect for a desk reference for a teacher dealing with an issue at the moment. As an experienced teacher of youth and adults, of secular and Christian curriculums, in workshops and yearlong classes, I have found this book to be an eye opener for new ideas in teaching. I highly recommend it.

Thousands upon thousands of Civil War books are available, as American readers seem to have a limitless appetite for that era. If you are looking for the best, read Sandburg on Lincoln. A major American poet takes on one of the best-known, best-loved, most tragic of American historical figures.
When I was a freshman in high school, our English teacher offered us a deal: Anyone who read Sandburg's biography (then in six rather daunting volumes) would not have to attend class for a semester. I took him up on that offer, and was blessed to find my way through Sandburg's gift to the American people. Here is the highly detailed, thoroughly researched, and articulately written story of Abe Lincoln's years among us.
If you have time to read only one of the Civil War books from that burgeoning genre, read this one. You will come to know, from the inside out, this prairie boy who became a towering figure in American history.

A Pulitzer Prize winner's master work.

I believe Sandburg is the only author to win the Pulitzer for both poetry and history. Originally a multi volume history taking decades to complete, this single volume work is an appetizer. I read it in the 1960's and went on with relish to the full multi volume work.
This single volume is insightful, laser like in it's detail yet painting the times of Lincoln in a broad and beautiful brush. Did you know that in 1860 tools could be honed to within one ten thousandth of an inch of accuracy? That magazines and newspapers said the world would change for-ever because of the new "instant" communication nation wide?
This is more than biography. It is a woven fabric depicting the times and life of Abraham Lincoln.

An American Classic on a Classic American

I collect old and rare books. My mother bought me a copy of Sandburg's one-volume edition published in 1954. Honestly, it was slow to start, but once it got to the 1850's, I couldn't put it down. Lincoln's deeds are so often trivialized in our history books. But Sandburg meticulously builds up the background in a way that forces his reader to appreciate the magnitude of the moment, and the importance of each decision--whether right or wrong--that President Lincoln made. It easily took three full weeks to read, but it was more than worth it. I closed the book thinking, "I can't believe it's over!" My advice: Read this book right away, and make someone else read it too. You'll need someone to talk to when you're through!

Have you ever been in a situation where you love someone but they treat you wrong? This is what happens in the book Someone To Love Me by Ann Schraff. The setting of the book is in a school called Blufford High and the reading level of the book is 4.5. Well a girl named Cindy was in this situation. It all started when Cindy started going out with a boy in Blufford High named Bobby. In the book Bobby was accused of using drugs, and everyone knew that accept for Cindy. In the book he does sound to Cindy like a very nice person. Any person who calls you Cinderella sounds like a nice person! Bobby said things to Cindy to make her feel conformable to him. Her friends told her he was too much trouble, but Cindy said he changed.
"Cindy is you really going out with Bobby Wallace?" Jamee asked. Suddenly Cindy took a deep breath, "listen Jamee I now what you're thinking but it's not like that, Bobby isn't the same person when you went out with him." "But how do you know that for sure"? Jamee said.

Jamee is one of Cindy's friends. Jamee helps Cindy in situations that Cindy needs help in. By the end of the book will Cindy find out if her friends were telling the truth?
Once I began reading this book I didn't want to stop. In the book there was a part that really caught my attention, and that part was when Bobby got mad at Cindy just because she was looking for him after school. He yelled at her and grabbed her arm. This part of the book really got me mad because I do know that there are people in the world like this. Also this book got me so interested that at home I would tell my brothers to turn off the TV so I could read, and I don't usually do that. This book is the best. I promise you, when you read this book you won't want to stop until you finish it.
I think the message of the book is to listen to your friends when they are trying to help you. I recommend this book to anyone that likes books that are about love and growing up or even books that suspenseful. This book is a very good book for someone to read. This book can really make you pause, think, and imagine what's really happening. It's like you're actually in the setting of the book.

Remarkable women with feet of clay

This is the best biography about Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller that I have read. Since I was a child I have been fascinated by them and have read everything that I could get my hands on. Lash goes beyond their heroism and describes Annie and Helen as real people with "feet of clay."

He relies heavily on voluminous correspondence to show the many facets of Helen and those in her life. Many of these details are not explained in other biographies. For example, Helen's father tried to shore up his finances with loans (often defaulted) from Helen's patrons. The "Frost King" incident caused many people to doubt Annie's veracity and credibility as a teacher for the rest of her life. Mr.Sandborn and Mr. Anagnos used the controversy to divert attention from Annie's role as Teacher to Helen and to re-focus attention on the role that the Perkins Institute played in her education. Lash also shows that John Macy had a complex relationship (for the good and the bad) with both Annie and with Helen. Helen was a radical Socialist and often risked her popularity and, therefore, their income by speaking out in support of Socialist leaders and causes. In the end the reader sees that Helen and many of those around her did great things, but they were not perfect. Insecurity, jealousy, money and a desire for love and fame caused all of them to act ugly sometimes.

The other point that was never clear to me before, is that Helen and Annie spent their lives marketing themselves in order to generate an income. Helen's father faced a serious financial downturn that prevented him from supporting them from Helen's young womanhood on. Therefore, to continue Helen's formal education and to maintain a home away from Alabama, they had to cultivate sponsors, write publishable material, and earn money speaking at a myriad of functions. In many ways, this was an uncertain life that dictated that they remain in good standing with public opinion at all times.

The other connection that Lash made for me concerns the complexity, the depth and the breadth of Annie and Helen's relationship. Because Annie suffered through a harrowing childhood, she desperately needed to create a loving family. Helen presented the perfect opportunity for Annie to be needed and to love and be loved unconditionally. While some people construed their relationship to be unhealthy or manipulative, it seems that it was a natural outgrowth of their particular situation. Once again, it was not perfect, but it served a huge need for them both.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to see a more realistic view of the lives of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan.

SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP

The lives of Helen Keller and her teacher, Ann Sullivan Macy are eternally intertwined. Helen Keller, blind and deaf since infancy depended on Annie since the age of 6 when the latter was hired to teach her.
This comprehensive, fascinating and completely riviting biography does an excellent job of separating the two women's lives and analyzing each woman in her own right. Helen takes giant steps beyond the water pump where Annie first impressed upon her the concept of language. It is to this author's credit that the reader does not languish at that water pump, but follows these women throughout their lives.
The true symbiosis is fully described when other teachers as well as Helen's own mother Kate, try to separate her from Annie. Feeling that her maternal authority had been usurped, Kate understandably wanted to wean Helen from Annie. Each attempt by any person to effect such a change resulted in disaster. Even Annie's marriage to a gifted editor named John Macy ended in an acrimonious split because he felt Helen took up too large a portion of their lives together. From all accounts, Macy seemed to feel that Annie used the same domineering methods she had used on the child Helen with him. He also described Annie as "manipulative and controlling," which certainly seem like apt descriptions of her approach. Resentful of Helen's constant presence and feeling like an odd member of an equally odd triadic relationship, John retreats further from the marriage.
When Annie dies, Helen is disconsolate; she feels she can't survive without her "Teacher," although she, by that point had been at Annie's side for nearly half a century. A bright, progressive woman named Polly assumes the role of "Teacher," and Helen flourishes under her gentle tutlage and interpretation. Polly is clearly accepting of Helen's challenges and appears to make a sincere effort to see that Helen is fully included in all conversations and activities which she [Polly] is part of. One does not get the sense that Polly is a martyr. One gets the impression that Polly is loyal and determined with no agenda of her own.
Helen's relationship with Polly does appear to be much healthier than her relationship with Annie. This book fully explores Helen's character, her life experiences and the types of relationships she forged in the post-Teacher years with intelligence and sensitivity.

There is no need to read anything else on Helen Keller or Annie Sullivan Macy, because it is all included in this incredible biography. This in-depth look at these two remarkable women was both readable and throughly informative. Of all my research on Annie Sullivan, I have found nothing that is not mentioned in Mr. Lash's work; he has truly captured her spirit, along with her triumphant pupil.
