Right up front we'll say that the song "Victor Vito" is a much better song than it is a story. However, if you read the book while listening to the CD, you'll have a fun (and nonsensical) illustrated-song experience. Fortunately, the CD is included in the back, and features the songs "Victor Vito" and the catchy "Bumblebee (Buzz Buzz)," both written and performed by Berkner. Plus, the music to "Victor Vito" (with all four verses) is printed in the back for those wanting to create a festive and musical story hour.

The book begins with a letter from polar bears Victor and Freddie, owners of Alaska's Klondike Café, announcing to the seal-waitresses and walrus-cooks that they are embarking on a cross-America road trip to discover new, not-so-fishy taste treats. In New Mexico, they eat a burrito with Tabasco: "They put it on their rice, they put it on their beans." In Louisiana, they put it "on their rutabagas, and on their collard greens." In New York City, a squirrel maitre d' suggests, "Hey VICTOR! Hey Freddie! Let's eat some spaghetti." They do... with Tabasco. When Victor and Freddie finally get home, everyone is excited to eat spaghetti instead of the usual Klondike Café fish. Victor and Freddie, two polar bears who own the Klondike Café in Alaska, decide they need to spice up their menu. They close their restaurant, give their walrus cooks and seal waitresses a vacation, hop into a convertible VW bug, and travel around America to find new flavors. From burritos in New Mexico to collard greens in Louisiana, and spaghetti in New York, they load up with different foods. Once home, they are joined by a party of critters at the Café to celebrate their new cuisine. Cole's lush cartoon illustrations sprawl across the pages as the bears take in the scenery and tasty treats during their excursion. Added touches like the vacationing staff lolling on the beach and reading their bosses' postcards enlarge upon the slight lyrics. Children familiar with the song will enjoy the nuttiness of the story and even those who don't know it will appreciate the bears' antics. My daughter really enjoys this book and the color illustrations are vivid and alluring. I'm glad Laura is out there for my Baby Girl. It's so refreshing to see someone with talent who enjoys giving the girft of music to kids.

The boys love the song but the book was not the same

My two boys 2 and 4 love Laurie and her songs. We have the CDs in the car and of course we watch Noggin but the book just was not as good for them. I think it was better in their imagination.

We love Laurie

My daughter loves Laurie Berkner and Victor Vito is her new song of the moment so that book is fantastic. It comes with the CD as well. It is great because it goes with the song! We find ourselves singing the words. My only wish that it was a hardcover. Our paperback is already torn.

Robin's parents aspire for him to go to college, but following September 11, he feels compelled to join the Army instead. Robin quickly learns that the situation in Iraq will not be resolved easily and that much of what is happening there will never make the news. Facing the horrors of war, Robin tries to remain hopeful and comforting in his letters to his family, never showing his fear or the danger he actually faces. The story of teenagers going to war today is an important one, and it is not told often enough. Myers writes an important book to have in any collection to recognize that many teens will choose to join the military instead of, or before, going on to college. Sunrise over Fallujah

This is a poignant story about a young black soldier from Harlem, New York who is sent to Iraq in the early days of the war; and although fiction, his impressions, experiences and friendships portray vividly the emotional tension of a war zone. The book begins with a heartfelt letter that Robin "Birdy" Perry writes to his Uncle Richie, a Vietnam vet. "Birdy" explains that he wanted to help his country after 911 and he thought that his war experience would be different from that of his Uncle who had to deal with anger from his fellow Americans when he returned home. He asks his Uncle to help his father understand why he needs to fight for his country. Contemporary language and realistic interactions lend immediacy to this dramatic story that reveals the powerful friendships and conflicts that can arise amidst the affecting life and death backdrop of war.

A compelling and realistic read

Several times while reading this book I had to stop and remind myself that this was a novel and a work of fiction. Walter Dean Myers captures the very essence of the early days of Operation Iraqi Freedom. As a Member of an Army Transportation Unit deployed to Iraq from April of 2003 to May of 2004, I recognized many of the sights and sounds (and even the smells) brought to life by the author.

War is a challenge for the best of us, and the young people depicted in this novel are no different than those that I had the privilege of serving with. This book is not a political statement, but instead a glimpse into the very life of the first OIF soldiers. For those who believe that Mr. Myers characters are whiny and unprofessional, I am here to tell you that you worry more about soldiers when they cease to complain. For that is the very first clue that your troops have lost their drive and their will to survive.

I would recommend this book to any young person who is considering joining the military, and I salute Mr. Myers for a first rate book and also Scholastic for printing such a timely and profound piece.

The Iraq War, in the news now for years, is the focus of SUNRISE OVER FALLUJAH, the latest book by veteran YA author Walter Dean Myers. He has written other war stories, but this newest one expresses the controversy and mixed emotions Iraq has generated among so many.

Robin Perry, aka Birdy, has made the decision to enlist. Certain members of his family have expressed their concern and even disapproval of Robin's decision to serve. Through occasional letters to family members, readers learn about many of Robin's wartime experiences.

As part of a unit assigned to handle civil matters with the Iraqi people, Robin and his fellow soldiers still see all angles of military action. The endless lines of army and marine vehicles traveling toward Baghdad, the choking sand storms, the frightening IED explosions, and grieving soldiers and civilians all combine to illustrate the horrors of war.

Robin's feelings about the senselessness of the war are clearly expressed. As the events of his tour of duty unfold, he realizes if asked whether the Americans were winning or losing, he would find the question unanswerable. The promise of a quick return home for the troops turns into delay after delay as it becomes obvious that Saddam's reign may have ended, but many more deep-seated problems exist in war-torn Iraq.

Although the story of SUNRISE OVER FALLUJAH is a mere glimpse of the action through the eyes of few, Myers has created a chance for teens to learn about a war that has filled their days much as the Vietnam War became part of the lives of teens some thirty years ago.

About the Author
Mary Beth Allen is Professor of Reading Education at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. Prior to that, she worked for 18 years in the Baltimore County Public Schools, as a classroom teacher, resource teacher, and reading specialist. She has consulted with numerous school districts supporting teachers as they refine their literacy instruction, specifically in guided reading, implementing literacy centers, and teaching comprehension strategies.

Mary Beth is the co-author of 3 books published by the International Reading Association—Guided Comprehension: A Teaching Model for Grades 3-6, Guided Comprehension: Lessons in Action, and Guided Comprehension in Grades 3-8: Combined Second Edition. She has also created two videos with the Bureau of Education and Research—Current, Best Strategies for Teaching Reading Comprehension, Grades K-2 and Strengthening Students' Reading Comprehension, Grades 3-6. This is her first book for Scholastic Teaching Resources.

Unfortunately, Meyers's characterizations are uneven, in contrast to her solid, straight narrative passages. Ruby's voice is too babyish and whiny, and the girls' energetic new pal Olivia is given an affected child characterization that is equally grating. In Welcone to Camden Falls, Flora and her younger sister, Ruby, recently orphaned, have come to live with their grandmother, Min, who co-owns a fabric shop in a New England town. The adjustment to life in Camden Falls is difficult, but the girls make new friends, and Flora finds solace as she gets more deeply into her hobby, sewing. Martin does some unusual things here, telling the story from several perspectives and filling it with modern-day problems, even as the feel of the book harkens back to an earlier time. An almost dizzying array of characters is introduced, including one neighbor who has Down syndrome, another who has Alzheimer's disease, and a third who is struggling with aging. A new friend must deal with a mother who drinks and a father who is abusive. Sometimes these problems overwhelm the story, but Martin's easy style, appealing characters, and obvious love of place will keep readers going. Cooper, Ilene

the beginning of another great series

it is difficult to not think of "the baby-sitters club" when thinking of ann m. martin. i loved that series and my sister and i read and re-read the books until they fell apart in our hands. she created believable characters that we wished we could befriend. she does that again here, in a place called camden falls. it's a small town where everyone knows everyone else. flora and lucy are two sisters who find themselves suddenly uprooted from their homes when their parents die in an accident. their grandmother, min, comes to take them back to her home. the girls struggle to adjust to life without their parents and life in a new place but they have plenty of help. their grandmother's shop "needle and thread" serves as a workplace as well as a meet and greet. they have a friend, olivia, and soon will meet nikki to complete the group of 4. ann m. martin takes us into people homes, looking into their windows and their lives, to give us a sense of the community, and sets the stage for another great series for girls.

i eagerly await the second book of the series that is set to come out august 1st!

I really enjoyed reading the first book in the new MAIN STREET series by Ann M. Martin. I am glad that she is doing another series. I have many girls in my 5th-grade class who are still reading THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB and this new series is a little more timely.

It is the story of two sisters, Flora and Ruby, who lose their parents one night in a terrible car crash. Their grandmother picks up the pieces of their lives and they move to Camden Falls to live with her. Their grandmother owns a sewing shop and the girls help her out. There they meet two other girls -- Olivia, who lives next door and whose grandmother is co-owner of the shop, and Nikki, who is poor and lives on the wrong side of town.

Flora, Olivia, and Nikki are all in sixth grade and have the same teacher, and Ruby will be in fourth grade.

The author has made a simple story very contemporary by including many social issues that kids need to face each day. There is a family contending with Alzheimers Disease and another with downsizing. Flora is faced with trying to know who she is and who her parents were, there is a lady who has been in a concentration camp, another family who has a teen with Down Syndrome, and poverty. It is an intelligent and not watered down story.

I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series and introducing them to my class in the fall.

Deals with loss and renewal in a powerful way

Losing a parent is one of the most devastating experiences a child can have. Losing both at once is even more so. Welcome to Camden Falls (audiobook) captivated my eight-year-old daughter for hours as she quietly listened to the story of Ruby and Flora's lives unfold. Having lost both parents in a freak auto accident, both children are sent to live with their grandmother, Min, named due to her "in a minute" attitude when the kids would come visit to her and want to play.

When asked what interested my daughter the most in the story, she couldn't really put it to words. My guess is she could relate to both the eight and eleven-year-old characters the most. Since I spent a great deal of my young adult life in New England, I enjoyed listening to the story as the author created a world of time and place I could vividly imagine. Although some of the concepts in the book are meant for 9-12 years olds, I think even eight-year-olds can enjoy many parts of the story. A delightful book!

FACTS ARE WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I read, I noticed that in the statehood and order boxes in Wyoming and Arizona, they both said they were the 48th state. Louisiana is also wrong. How many others are wrong? I also think that they should have written a list or a timeline of when each state joined the Union. Also, instead of sorting the states into regions, I think that they should have been put alphabetically, but the author could have written at the top or somewhere else which region each state is in. I did like the information on each page.

Great information. BUT not alphabetical

I like the information in this book, and it's a great learning tool for kids. We use it a lot. *A lot.*

The state maps seem a little "squashed" onto the page. The states are arranged by region, instead of straight alphabetically. This makes it harder to use, but we get practice looking things up in the table of contents.

Useless. Facts are pointless; no highways to show connectivity; the shading makes highlighting impossible; in-wanted extras make it too big to be easily portable; to think...I wanted a pocket atlas and got this waste of tree bark.

Incredible Follow Up to "Tyrell"

Coe Booth has quickly become my favorite author as I've read both "Kendra", and "Tyrell" amazing products of heart, creativity, and talent. "Bronxwood" was spectacular, and way better than I initially expected. Usually, when you fall in love with a novel, your often disappointed with it's sequel but "Bronxwood" did not fail me as a "Tyrell" fan. The first thing that "Bronxwood" does is allow you as a reader to become more connected to the life he lives, his feelings, his background, and his drive to do better. The one thing that I admire about the character Tyrell is, like myself he tries very hard not to fall into the traps that people around him have fallen into. It's easy for people, especially African-American young men to duplicate what they see. However, Tyrell is a LEADER and not a follower, and that is the biggest quality he carries. The book was also way more exciting than the original. Which is what most sequels fail to do. Instead of trying to retell us what happened in the first book, she creates a totally different story that continues to show us the growth of Tyrell as he grows into his own man. Overall, Tyrell's story is incredible, entertaining, and relatable. KUDOS to Ms. Coe Booth, and I hope she continues to give us her talent with more books surrounding Tyrell. I also am extremely interested in reading a book surrounding Jasmine, as her character is the Bonnie to Tyrell's Clyde. I'm ready to see them take a life on together outside of Bronxwood.

About the Author
Award-wining author Lisa McCourt has written over thirty books for children, including the Stinky Face books. She lives with her family in Boca Raton, Florida.

Eve Bunting was born in 1928 in Ireland where she was raised, and she graduated from Methodist College. She has written more than two hundred books, ranging from picture books to young adult novels. Her subject matter spans both fantasy and reality. She has received countless awards for her writing, and never ceases to produce new books. Eve says that as long as the world is full of such wonderful ideas, she will continue writing. In addition, she says that, for her, writing is like breathing--it is necessary. This wonderful writer is also wonderful wife to her husband Ed and a mother of three - one daughter and two sons - Christine, Sloan and Glenn.

David McPhail was born on June 30, 1940 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. As a child, David was very imaginative and creative, pretending to be famous heroes and drawing what he imagined. In addition, he was addicted to books from an early age. He attended Vesper George University from 1957-1958 and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School from 1963-1966. He has been an illustrator of children’s books since 1967 and an author of children’s books since 1971. He says he enjoys writing and illustrating as much as he did when he began.

Caroline Jayne Church is a bestselling author and illustrator. Born and raised in suburban Wyckoff, New Jersey, Melissa Sweet studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute. This is a fantastic collection of I love you books for ages 0-5. My son is 4 1/2 and since getting this book last week he has had me read a few of the stories every night and can't wait until morning to tell me he loves me in different ways like in the books.

Very sweet and a great way to spend one on one time with your kids.

This book is such a joy to read. I have purchased this book for all of my grandchildren. It is definitely a feel good book to build any child's self esteem and express true unconditional love. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Appropriate Book for Urban Teens who Need Stories About Them

I gave this book to a student in my homeroom who is from a minority group in our school and has trouble reading. It meant the world to him. He loves this series and enjoys reading them.

A Teacher's Perspective: The Gun

The Gun, by Paul Langan, Townsend Press, 2002, 123 pages, reading level 7.6, is a great book for high school reading students. My students who have read it have loved it! The Gun is part of a 10-book Bluford Series, which chronicles the lives of a group of 9th graders at Bluford High School. The books are of extremely high interest, but are still at their independent reading level. Best of all, if you buy from their website the books are only a $1 each (sorry amazon.com!)

In The Gun, a former bully Tyray Hobbs vows revenge after the "new kid" Darrell he used to torment defends himself and beats up Tyray in the lunchroom in front of the whole school. Faced with the torment of his peers, Tyray decides that the only way he can get back his reputation is to buy a gun and really show Darrell who is in charge. In attempting to purchase the gun and then deciding whether or not to use it, Tyray goes through a lot of emotional heartache and finally comes to terms with the boy he is and the man he wishes to become.
Overall, the book is great. When I brought in this book, my kids were practically fighting over who got to read it first! The issues discussed in the book are ones that my students are familiar with, making the novel both accessible and relevant to their lives. The only area for improvment could be at the introduction of the story, giving the reader a little more information about the main characters Darrell and Tyray. Because the book is part of the series, some deepened levels of theme comprehension depend on having read the books before it, which not all students will have done.

A Good Book That Makes You Want to Read More

I read The Gun by Paul Langen. The main characters in this book are Tyray, Darrell, Amberlynn, and Harold. I wanted to read this book because my teacher influenced me to read the whole series and said they were great books. In this book, Tyray gets mad and wants to shoot Darrell. Tyray gets the gun from Bones for $50. At the end, he does not shoot Darrell because they became associates. Young teenagers, mostly boys, would enjoy this book. The theme of the book is "what goes around comes around" because in the first book, The Bully, Tyray kept on bullying Darrell, and now in The Gun Darrell takes on Tyray's reputation.

In my opinion, The Gun expresses how young teens today live their life and how they act out so that makes it a good book. It can relate to teens today. One of my favorite parts in the book was when Tyray first got the gun from Bones because it would

leave you in suspense not knowing what would happen next. The second part I really like was when Tyray hears from his brother Warren in a letter, I think that was a good part also because Tyray was sad because he hadn't heard from his brother in a long time.. I don't think the book had any weak parts because it all relates to one thing.

My overall opinion of The Gun was great and it influencing me to read all of the Bluford Series to actually understand them all as one. I do recommend this book because it tells about a today's teen life.
