Campy Sci-Fi Fun!

In Rockaway, New Jersey there is a great little used bookstore called Ray and Judy’s.
It’s a claustrophobic’s nightmare, though. Shelves that go from floor to ceiling overflow with books. The corridors are about as wide as your shoulders. Piles of books litter the floor. If there were a fire, this is the last place on Earth you’d want to be.
But there’s a lot to like about Ray and Judy’s. For being so cramped, it’s well-organized. All books are arranged by genre. Both Ray and Judy are knowledgeable in pretty much their entire inventory. The books are CHEAP. I purchased The Great Brain Robbery, as well as 3 other campy sci-fi books, for less than $5. AND THE SMELL! That old book smell! It permeates everything. Booklovers know that smell. You get that Pavlovian response. You just have to buy something.
So what was I expecting from this book? I had no idea. I bought it just because I wanted something obscure and I thought the title was funny.
The book itself is old. Printed in 1970. To put in perspective how old it is, in the middle of the novel there is a full page color advertisement for Kent Menthol cigarettes. And a lot of the ideas and perspectives in the novel are old too. The main character, Dennis Sands, is constantly psychoanalyzing everyone. He’s always like “This person need therapy because blah blah blah blah.” And it’s usually some dumb or out-of-date idea like “This person need therapy because she’s a ‘hysterical’ woman.” That kind of crap.
But the novel overall is FUN. I mean, it’s not GOOD, per se. It’s not life-altering. It’s a pulp book from a time when pulp books like this existed. It falls into pretty much every science fiction trope imaginable: flying saucers and alternate dimensions and humanoid aliens and recurring dreams and laser pistols and several ‘deus ex machinas’ to get the hero out of any sticky situation and on and on and on and on. BUT, that’s precisely why I bought this book. And that’s why I liked it. I WANTED corny sci-fi stereotypes. AND IT DELIVERED. I mean, Dennis even karate chops an alien at one point. KARATE CHOPS! There was no mention before about him knowing karate or being trained in fighting, and there is no mention of it after. The reason he karate chops an alien is because Captain Kirk was always karate chopping aliens in Star Trek and the author undoubtedly figured ‘Hey, this is what heroes in outer space DO!”
Look, I’m not recommending anyone read this unless you’re into old science fiction that is executed as if written by a teenage Ray Bradbury if he were a C student. But hey, not every book from the past is a classic, but the rest of them aren't complete junk either. This was quick read and corny fun and I enjoyed it. SO THERE!
