Did you ever wonder how your state got its name?

From Alabama to Wyoming, GREETINGS FROM THE 50 STATES covers the origin of each state's name, official and unofficial nicknames, and the year it was granted statehood. Behind each state's name is a story of how Americans felt about the land they settled, how they connected to its history and geography, and how they recognized its unique character.

From Booklist
Keenan lines up the states in alphabetical order; tacks Washington, D.C., onto the end; and presents breezy anecdotal accounts of how each earned its name and motto. Common themes quickly emerge—notably the number of variant spellings early on (31 for Alabama, 70 for Arkansas), and the many names that are either of obscure origin (Arizona, Kentucky, Oregon) or, like Idaho, invented words. Along with colorful labels in a variety of lettering styles, Alko decorates her fanciful portraits of each state with large images of iconic physical features, natural resources, famous people, and historic incidents. Like Laurie Keller’s Scrambled States of America (1998) or Peter Sís’ Train of States (2004), this is not particularly useful for assignments, but should make for welcome and popular enrichment reading. Grades 4-6. --John Peters

This book is an excellent resource for not only the origin of the state's name, but many other interesting facts!

Which state's name has only one syllable? How fast can you spell Mississippi? What is the capital of the Alligator State? Do you know which state was the last to join the union? Do you know all the state capitals? If you don't, you can search the map on the adjoining page of each state and find the starred city. The other facts might take a little searching or, in the case of spelling Mississippi, a bit of practice. Greetings from the 50 States has a lot of interesting little facts hidden in its maps if you look closely!

The states are arranged in alphabetical order beginning with Arkansas. Hmmm, is that a fact or am I pulling a fast one here? Young people who know their states can spot this fib in a minute, but others will have to check it out. Each state is accompanied by a colorful map and if you look closely you can discover many interesting things from products to famous people who either discovered the state or lived there. Each state page has a brief, but concise history of its origins and several facts to remember. In the upper right-hand page there is a large star. Inside it tells the reader when the date on which the state joined the union. On the bottom right it has an illustration and gives the name of the state. Have you figured out which is the Alligator State yet?

This book is an excellent resource for not only the origin of the state's name, but many other interesting facts. It is a large, comfortable lap book or can easily be laid out on the floor for a few youngsters to pore over. It is far from stuffy . . . it is bright, colorful and has some surprising tidbits hidden inside the maps. It even has a caricature of Bruce Springsteen on the New Jersey page! For those strict historians it also includes Sir George Carteret. This book is a keeper and the price is very reasonable for the hardcover edition.

Very enjoyable

We are a family that takes long, long road trips, and there is always room in the car for one... more... book. This one.

Great illustrations and cut-out collages with maps and objects make for interesting looking, and you can assign someone to be an "expert" on each state you travel through.

If you like this, also try Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across America -- less text, but amazing illustrations.

Cute book but...
By A. Carter
I like the concept of this book and the illustrations are fun and whimsical, but I was very disappointed to see two obvious errors on the Washington State map. For one thing, Mount St. Helens, which is part of the Cascade mountain range (through the middle of the state) is on the Olympic Peninsula on this map. Not even close. Also, this map shows the Rocky Mountains in the northeast corner of the state where Spokane should be. Now I'm no geography expert, but I did go to school in Pullman, grew up in western Washington, and have made several trips to Spokane in my day. I can guarantee that the Rockies aren't there. Montana, however, would be a great place to look for them. I didn't check the other state maps, but it would be interesting/scary to see what's there.
