A great read!

This is a dark, gorgeous re-telling of "Rumpelstiltskin," but it is also the tale re-shaped for a more modern setting: England at the start of the Industrial Revolution. The miller is a woman, and her worries are modern worries, such as debt and bankruptcy. Her mill keeps most of the village around it employed, and she wants to give her sister a good start in life. Worse, the mill, and her family, seem to be cursed. The characters, from the miller's family to the townspeople, are all interesting. I really liked and admired the hard-working miller and the bank representative who tries to help her. And this new Rumpelstiltskin is believable and scary. As I approached the end of the book, I was praying that everything would turn out well, and I wasn't sure if the writer could pull it off! If you like Libba Bray and Melissa Marr, I think you will love this book!

Since her father's death, the fate of the Miller family woolen mill and that of the Shearing village rests on Charlotte's shoulders. An unexpected and seemingly insurmountable debt leads to a difficult choice for the normally practical and levelheaded miller's daughter.

Must she take the offer of the strange little man who can weave straw into gold, or can she make her own way through the maze of ill luck and deceit that seems her family legacy?

Elizabeth C. Bunce's A CURSE DARK AS GOLD is worth its own weight in gold and then some. A folkloric re-telling beyond Rumpelstiltskin proportions, this tale weaves the best storytelling techniques into a fine tapestry of intrigue, drama, and romance.

The tight writing never wavers. Gorgeous, consistent language abounds, like, "I sank to my knees in a sea of crumpled flannel and pressed my hands into the sharp shale of the yard, as if bites from the stones could remind me of who I was."

And just who is Charlotte Miller? Certainly one of the most fascinating characters I've come across of late. If not self-confident at the beginning of our story, she is at least confident in what she knows: the mill cannot go under and the families of Shearing cannot be allowed to starve or scatter to the winds. As she is the only one around to prevent these happenings, Charlotte will do what she must to prevent them. And so she does.

As time goes on, and with Pinchfields Mill of Harrowgate nipping at her heels, Charlotte's choices become ever more difficult and the stakes are raised as she struggles through crisis after crisis. Charlotte's resolve to dismiss the very idea of the Miller Curse crumbles into a pile of wasted wishes as the harsh reality of the unreal comes to be. She is forced to play the hand that's dealt, facing sinister forces she once easily dismissed.

A strong protagonist indeed.

Every word counts in this amazing book. The language, while assuredly stunning and appealing, is never frivolous. It's hard to believe this is a debut novel, and I eagerly await whatever Ms. Bunce wishes to put in front of me next, as it's sure to be delightful and satisfying if it's near the quality of A CURSE DARK AS GOLD.

It's only fitting that this novel be recommended for the Gold Star Award for Excellence and admittance to the TeensReadToo Hall of Fame.

Powerfully written

Charlotte Miller is a young girl who just lost her father. She and her younger sister, Rosie, have just inherited the mill that has been in their family for generations. As far as Charlotte can remember their have been whispers of strange goings on at the mill, and likewise to he Miller family, that have been attributed to a curse. Charlotte finds this notion ridiculous and turns her nose up at the townspeople's more superstitious notions, but when events get more dire she begins to give the rumors a bit of credence, particularly so when an eldritch young man shows up at her door offering his services.

Part mystery, part fairy tale, part ghost story this ingenious retelling of "Rumplestiltskin" will have readers stunned from the word go. Bunce has certainly done her research with the workings of mills and the people from this period in history. The result is a strikingly written story that will have it's readers wondering what happened to the characters long after the close of the book. I enjoyed this story far more than I thought I would, and will highly recommend it in the future.

My 7 year old son loves this whole series of books. They are some of the only books he wants to keep on reading, even after his reading timer goes off. He can't seem to put them down, and he talks about them after reading. He also has picked them a few times to do his book reports on. Highly recommended!

My opinion on "Goose Bumps Horror Land"

My Book report is on the book called, "Goose Bumps Horror Land" and it is about a group of kids visiting a carnival, and they do not realize that the carnival is run by monsters in disguises. The kids are running down a hall, and a security guard stops them to ask where their parents are. One the kids said, "we came here without our parents." Then, the guard removed his mask and he was a creature from the unknown, then the kids were all frightened, so they all ran away. Then 3 other monsters ganged up on them, and kidnapped them. One of the creatures wanted to make them slaves. The main creature said, "let's just give them a chance", so he did. He asked the kids their names, were they lived, and why they came without their parents. So, the monsters let the kids go. When one of the boys got home. He realized his parents were acting different, then his mom and dad took off their masks, and they were monsters, and the dad monster said, "hey kid, come with us, then you'll get your parents back, okay?" The boy was stunned but he went to the carnival to find that all the other kids were there to. He said, "what have I done?" And that was all of the book.

Lizze and Luke are back, but silly villain

Book Eleven in the series changes format. There are no longer two stories, just one. The characters Lizzie and Luke Morris, from the original "One Day at Horrorland," return to the park to save the other kids. They have no other choice, but to go through the Hall of Mirrors and enter the black & white Panic Park. There are no exits, and finally the person behind the horror is revealed.

This is an exciting sequel. It was great to see Lizzie and Luke back. I was disappointed with the villain. I expected that there would be a much eviler menace, maybe even an old villain from the original series. Overall, I enjoyed reading it.

Not as Good As Expected, Too Much Too Fast

My daughter and I loved the first two sets in this boxed set. The previous ones were very easy and got just a little bit harder with each book so as to not discourage my daughter with too many rules. Granted, eventually the harder rules should be introduced, but since the first 2 books eased in at just the right pace, I would think this set would be the same. Not so--they move way too fast and teach a rule but then throw in a word that goes against that rule. My daughter refused to try to read anymore after the 2nd book the first night we got it because they were so frustrating. I also think the activity books are not that great--totally would have rather had those 2 books spread out the rules that they are trying to shove in the other 8 books.

The first book introduced "y" at the end of words as in floppy, "ed" as in stopped/begged, and "er" as in after. This isn't a big deal, but a lot of new rules to try to described to a new reader who is used to just adding ONE consonant sound each book.

Book 2 continues teaching the y at the end of the word and also continued words ending in "ed" as in flapped and bobbed. It also introduced "ew" as in flew. ALSO introduced "sh." ALSO introduced "ies" as in pennies. Again, much too much new rules before the child had time to get a grasp of what was taught in the previous book. The point of the series (I thought) was to make children proud of reading and excited they can read "all by themsemves!" How are they supposed to when each page you have to describe a new rule?

Book 3 continues with the absurd rules and changes of sounds. "Mama Frog and Papa Frog." Why not just say Mom, or Mum, or even Mommy since we are learning words end in y? Dad, Pop, Daddy! The a's in mama and papa are different from what the child has been accustomed to in both book sets one and two (a "regular" short a at is at, map, pam, etc). Again, not a HUGE deal when looked at alone, but in addition to all the new rules, it is very discouraging to yet again not be able to read the page without a correction from the parent.

Book 3 also spews out "polliwog," I suppose to teach i sounding like ee? Again, unnecessary and discouraging to the child. Also introduced is "ir" in bird. Also long i as in hide and dive. AGAIN--teaching long i's would be GREAT if that was the only new rule to concentrate on in the whole book.

For some reason I can't find book 4 right now so cannot comment specifically but I do remember that it introduces "ar" as in car. It also throws in "started" which is pronounced differently that the child has become accustomed to in the previous books as in popped, stopped. Easily could have caused less confuses by saying "the car did start." not "the car started." Again, that is all I remember off the top of my head right now from that book.

Book 5 and 6 finally slow down and there are almost no new rules--just a "toes" that needs to be said with a long o. Finally time to practice without having to keep track of new rules.

Book 7 introduces ing and ung, which again I think could be held off, or in the very least only teach ONE at a time. It also says "carrot" which is completely different sounding compared to what they have learned from the previous books. They JUST learned "ar" as in car and here they go throwing in another word that does not follow that rule.

It was just very disappointing if you are used to the previous BOB books. I feel like these books needed to be spread over 2 sets so the rules could be introduced one or two at a time and gave the child time to successfully use the rules they are learning before being thrown another rule. I absolutely adored the previous sets because there was only one or two new sounds introduced each book--it gave my child just the right amount of challenge to not discourage.

These books are the best! I love the confidence it gives my 5 yr old as he is learning to sound out words. My tried a lot of the "stepped" reading books with my oldest and they seemed to frustrate her with complex character names, etc. I find these bob books to be so much better!

These books are great for early readers. They are simple enough for children to feel confident in their reading and each volume slowly progresses to more challenging books. The "art" isn't the greatest, but the short stories are cute. We love Bob Books.

Wow... we have been big fans of Patrick Carman from the beginning of this trilogy and have enjoyed every book to follow! While my daughter, when we began this series, was definitely old enough to read on her own - we had just finished reading the Narnia series together and wanted to continue our family reading time with a similar style of writing! These books did not disappoint! In the age of Harry Potter popularity - this series features a 12 year old heroine that was a great character to relate to and look up to for our daughter. The other characters in the book are lovable and humorous and the books offer many twists and turns and suspence - even some tear jerker moments and laugh out loud scenes as well! I highly recommend this series for any family... your kids will love them, but don't miss out on them yourself! They will soon be 'classics' in their own right!

A Moving Story That Tugs At Your Heart; A Must-Read

Rumble Fish is an excellent book about a boy growing up in a tough neighborhood in a rough family. The boy idolizes his older brother and emulates him in any way that he can; he wants to be just like his brother. The problem is that he's not like his brother--he's an individual, but he doesn't realize it.
This book took me on a rollercoaster ride, where I would be laughing aloud one minute, and have tears on my cheeks the next minute. The end of RUMBLE FISH had such a tremendous effect on me-- it blew me away. The story stirred many emotions inside me and I know that it is forever encased in my heart and I will remember it always.
I've read several books by S.E. Hinton and she is, by far, the best author I have ever read. On my third read of her book, THE OUTSIDERS, I still had tears twinkling in the corners of my eyes.
RUMBLE FISH should be a must-read for young adults, especially those that are searching for themselves right now, or those that have become followers, and are not their own person. This book teaches a valuable lesson; you have to search a little to find it, but it's there

Couldn't Put It Down

I'm a junior in H.S. and I hate to read with a passion. But when my teacher gave me this book to read for a report I was alittle anoyed he gave what looked to be a kids book because it was so small. But when I started reading it I couldn't stop. So now I always thank him and I've gotten other people to read it and they love it, too. My parents might even read it because I liked it so much.

The Best novel by SE Hinton

Rumble fish is a dark look at life in the late sixties/early seventies . The main character is a tough guy named Rusty-James, who uses his strength and fighting abilities instead of his mind . The story is told as a flashback with Rusty-James meeting his old geeky friend Steve when he is in his early twenties . Throughout the story we see Rusty-James idolize his older brother who looks like a "prince," and whose view of the world differentiates from everybody else in the washed up neighbourhood . Rusty-James talks about one day looking like his older brother and his respect and reputation is gained partially from being related to the myth known as the Motorcycle Boy , his brother . The books charm is possibly because of how vague it is , the Motorcycle Boy is never named , neither is the time period , the location is'nt named and women are considered secondary characters , two dimensional and unimportant . Rusty-James has his crew of pals ; Smokey (the intellegent tough guy who has a silent tension with Rusty throughout the novel) , BJ , (the fat tough kid) , Midget , (the tall lanky kid who informs Rusty-James about his fight with Biff Wilcox) and last but definatly not least Steve Hays, Rusty's best friend , a nerdy blonde haired cautious guy , who looked twelve and acted forty . Rusty-James dad is an alcoholic who at one point in his life attended law school . The father never tells Rusty how to live his life and it seems as if Rusty-James and the Motorcycle Boy are free to do what they want . Rusty-James must worry if his dad will drink up the welare check before he can get his hands on some of the money . Rusty-James also has a girlfriend , Patty , a two dimensional girl who sways any way the wind blows , we find out that shes a hellcat and not a natural blonde , but thats about it . Rusty-James misses the days of the white gangs and rumbles , instead he lives in a washed up town infested with what killed the gangs -dope. Rusty-James looses the most important thing he had in his life and the novel basically ends there with a very depressing last paragraph . The novel is an example of how a simply written novel about a 14 year old wine haired punk who fights , drinks , smokes and gets expelled from his school can be a deep novel drentched in symbolism and interesting characters can be one of the best books I've ever read . And to think its only 135 pages ! The book is great and it prevokes so many emmotions in me , I can relate to everything in the book , the setting ,the characters , its people I've known and places I have been . This novel is amazing and I recomend it to anyone who wants to hear a good yarn .

A definite must have for schools and families.

As I have said previously, I am a sales rep for a major book publisher so I see a lot of books. I am certainly not afraid to tell you when my company sends out what I call a stinker. On the otherhand if we publish one I really like, I do not have a problem telling a school or library that they have to have a book.

This is a book that they should all have. It will appeal to students on a social level. It is wonderful teaching tool for teachers and parents alike. It does a wonderful job of being consistent on the rhyming text. Plus, it is just a real great story with really great pictures.

I ultimately judge a children's book by how often my child pulls the book out of the bookcase for me to read, and I can truly say that this is a book my two year old grabs almost every night.

Upon his release, and with the mayor temporarily out of town, Chutney incites the masses. Surely another influence at this point was Reagan's "Tear down this wall!" speech. We see formerly morose chimps painting their homes pink(!) and turning the palace into a fruity playground. Nor is it a stretch to see the kiddie rocket ship as a decommissioned weapon of mass destruction.

Chutney soon has the entire town's population dancing in the streets. Everyone is eating copious quantities of food, no one is working anymore. Drabsville (now renamed Happytown, in the classic revolutionary tradition) has gone from dystopia to utopia.

Having successfully turned the guards against their master, Chutney has *him* thrown into jail. With the mayor under lock and key, Chutney completes the coup d'état by assuming the mayoral post. He lets the former mayor out of jail but only to rub his nose in the new world order. Power to the people! Or at least to the chimpanzees.

This children's book packs some heavy messages into its colorful pages. For children conditioned to equating chimps with Curious George, they may not pick up on every facet of the story without parental assistance. How much you clue them in is up to you.

Tricky Territory

It is a tricky thing to try to teach kids that authority is not always right and sometimes you have to stand up to it. This book strikes a perfect balance, with the main character being punished for doing something beautiful and for the common good but technically against the rules. When he ultimately wins out (with the help of some young chimps), rather than punishing the person who jailed him, he teaches him the error of his ways. A very thoughtful book, but one that won't be over the heads of the intended audience.
