first graders love this book

Age and reading-level appropriate for emerging readers, this selection of short stories covers engaging topics, from a sick day to a trip to the grocery store with dad. Fun text and charming illustrations- my first grade daughter loves to read it on her own, and it's just challenging enough that she needs a bit of help, but with practice has been able to really expand her sight word vocabulary.

The ending could have been better for Recess Mess

"Fun with First Grade Friends" has cute illustrations and does introduce some level appropriate sight words such as "recess," "climbs" and "catches," but it didn't hold the interest of any of the children that I attempted to read it to. In the second story "Recess Mess," the story "jumped" to the ending. At the end Sam has to use the bathroom, but can't figure out which one, so he waits outside. On the next page he "is happy" and "feels swell" because he knows how to read and spell.
"The Lunchbox Surprise" is a separate book that I bought, and it was incorporated as the first story in this book. It held the interest of more of my students but they had already read it.
