About the Author
A freelance illustrator for twenty years, Roger Essley has illustrated five picture books and is the author/illustrator of the picture book Reunion. His artwork can be found in books, magazines, and in the collection of a number of museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He teaches classroom workshops and residencies and presents at national and regional conferences.

Linda Rief teaches eighth grade at Oyster River Middle School in Durham, New Hampshire. Her published books include 100 Quickwrites, Inside the Writer's-Reader's Notebook, and Seeking Diversity: Language Arts with Adolescents. With Kylene Beers and Robert Probst she co-edited Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise Into Practice, and for five years she co-edited NCTE's Voices from the Middle journal. In 2000 she was the recipient of NCTE's Edwin A. Hoey Award for Outstanding Middle School Educator in the English Language Arts.

Amy Levy Rocci has 12 years experience as an elementary educator. For the last three years she has developed and implemented an enrichment program that provides critical thinking activities for all students. A presenter at educational venues nationally and locally, Rocci received a BA in Psychology from George Washington University and a MEd from the University of New Hampshire.

Terrific tool for writing and problem solving!

I've been fortunate to have Roger Essley come several times to our school to present to our 4th grade students (and staff) this decade. The children write better and with more detail after learning his methods of Storyboard and TellingBoard writing, with especially good gains for special needs students. We have had those "wow" moments when a child who is shy or doesn't like to write keeps an audience spellbound with his/her story, using TellingBoards in the class conferences. Included in the book are formats for using storyboards not only for narrative, but also for using with non-fiction. His ideas truly will help with reaching all learners in your class! I know it's a cliche to say something is a "must-have", but from learing from Essley and using his methods successfully, the book Visual Tools IS a must-have for teachers of writing, reading, and problem solving.

Also: try to get his picture book "Reunion", a great book for boys.

helps organize thoughts

This book is written for educators to understand how to help students organize their thoughts to create projects like reports and home work assignments. The view point is that each of us learns and grasps concepts differently. Using visual tools, like quick stick man sketches, students of all levels are able organize and synthesize their ideas in preparation for tests and reports.

This book will be lifeline to learning for visual learners. It's a must to read for all teachers--particularly for teachers of children who are not making the progress in in literacy learning that they should / could be.

Telling Boards are "The Silver Bullet" for Reluctant Readers and Resistant writers. -- They are the Antidote for "Death by Phonics" for these these children.... With the right children Telling Boards are "The "Lazarus".of Literacy Learning.".
