But when Roz is fired in favor of Miss Muzzle—whose idea of a nourishing lunch is burnt peas and turnips—it's up to the resourceful Fly Guy to return the favor. Arnold's pop-eyed, big-headed cartoon figures provide the proper comedic air for this brief episode, which is arranged in chapters and wrapped in an eye-catching, glittery cover. Fledgling readers will cheer the intrepid insect on as he engineers Roz's return, and is last seen basking in a redolent bowl of garbage soup. Keep on buzzing, Fly Guy. (Easy reader. 6-8)

How's this for a backstory? "A boy had a pet fly. The fly was named Fly Guy. Fly Guy could say the boy's name -- Buzz!" And, with that, Arnold zooms right into this sequel to the 2006 Geisel Honor Book Hi! Fly Guy. This time, Fly Guy and Buzz go to school, where Fly Guy shows off more of his genius by not only learning phonics (does, fuzz, and was) but also moving right up to the application level when he goes to the lunchroom and addresses Roz, the cook. Roz's small act of kindness (she lets Fly Guy eat chicken bones and fish heads in sour milk) is unrewarded when she's fired. But Fly Guy, with Buzz's help, gets his revenge (and more practice in phonics) by outwitting her replacement, Miss Muzzle, known in flyspeak as "Mizz Muzz." The cartoon illustrations of Fly Guy, with his, well, bug eyes, are a welcome departure from the sweet and fuzzy animals that populate so many beginning readers, and this manic story, told in three chapters with simple vocabulary and repetitive phrases, creates an energy for reading. superb early reader

"Super Fly Guy" is a great early reader book. It's fun and silly while still remaining a reasonable read for about a level 3 reader. I also love "Hi Fly Guy" and "Shoo Fly Guy". I only wish I could find more books of this quality at this level.

Good for Beginning Readers

Tedd Arnold has recently written the 10th book in the Fly Guy series. This was our first encounter with Fly Guy. In Super Fly Guy, Fly Guy goes to school with Buzz and ends up helping out in the cafteria. The storyline is not so great, although I can see the appeal for younger kids. Who doesn't like gross, stinky garbage?! The illustrations are great and it's a "chapter" book (if you call 3 small chapters a chapter book!) with large print which is good for beginning readers.

Spoiler: the cover is incredible, but misleading.

To be honest, I bought this book for two reasons:
1) Slappy is my favorite character, and since the book listed him in an active role I naturally wanted to read it.
2) The cover is the most badass piece of art I've EVER seen on a Goosebumps book. I've never seen anything like it! I love the cover so much that I want to blow the image up and stick it on my wall.

The plot is simple enough, but the way it's told is a little...well, convoluted. There's about sixteen heroes/heroines running around in one big group throughout the story, and if you haven't read all the Goosebumps books you won't know who half of them are. (Trust me, I had to use the fan-made wiki for some of them.) There's also a small trope of villains from HorrorLand/other Goosebumps tales that show up later on to accompany the main villain, too. The main villain, called The Menace, is what I can only describe as "extremely kooky". Kooky characters can be fun to read about, but this guy got me annoyed within ten pages after his entrance. To my relief, he's destroyed in the end and we never have to see him in another story ever again. No, the twist ending doesn't involve him, either. Good riddance. And, uh, *spoiler*, I guess.

Admittedly, I read Goosebumps books to laugh, because I consider them a cheesy, campy bit of fun; they're the literary equivalent of eating a Ho-Ho when I could be eating an actual slice of home-made cake. This one, though, was like eating some weird off-brand Ho-Ho. So picture this: The Menace's plan is to make the kids so scared that their fright-fueled energy will transport the universe Panic Park resides in to the normal GB universe, which gets rid of Horrorland (which it coincidentally resides over the exact spot Panic Park once stood, making this possible somehow) and makes both universes blend together so our villain can take over the world and not be stuck in some time-capsuled dimension filled with shadow people from 1974. Y'know, just the usual villain fare. He also turns one kid into a shade, just to prove how scary he is to the kids, but really anyone who turns into those are practically written out of the story so you can keep track of who's who. Two-thirds into the book, The Menace sends the group of minor villains to scare the beejeezus out of our heroes, and it works for a bit, because the villains are totally enjoying tormenting the people who wronged them last time. Sadly, this mostly involves looking around a hall of mirrors and not being on/near the carousel from hell that the cover depicted. I literally waited all book for that scene to come up. I mean, who WOULDN'T want to read about the heroes stumbling into a carousel and becoming surprised when it starts to move, and then panicking when the horses' manes burst into flame? And then a familiar voice taunts them from a nearby plastic flaming horse, telling them that they'll never escape? I mean, come on, that can't just be me, right...? Admit it, you want to read that, too. It's better than what actually happened.

So pretty quickly the minor villains join forces with the heroes, because aw snap, the The Menace means to leave the surviving kids and the minor villains to rot away in Panic Park as prisoners! So the heroes learn that laughter is the key to defeating the Menace and go to do just that, with the villains tagging along. The dimension starts to disappear and they all run for the one building The Menace told them to stay away from (because it would kill them), and voilà, they're home! I won't spoil what the twist really is, but in my opinion it could've been much better. My version would have the kids end up in another parallel dimension. Overall, I'd say this book is...okay. The plot is one I haven't read in a kid's book before, so it gets points for some creativity, and I did enjoy the banter between the minor villains, but the execution is sorta flat and the villain's personality leaves me cold (and not in a spooky sense). I think this story could have been written better, with some better detail about the supposed parallel universe Panic Park resides in, and more interaction with the minor villains would've been a huge plus. Also, even though there were about seven villains in the Hall of Mirrors, only four are mentioned continuously while the rest are basically dropped from the story. Writer beware - don't write in so many characters you forget they were there!

The End

"The Streets of Panic Park" is the conclusion to the series. After escaping Horrorland, the kids ended up in Panic Park. A world with no color, only black& white. There are not safe there, as the park is the home of the villain, The Menace. The sixteen kids have to have their fears and make unlikely allies before they can escape.

This is a great ending to the series. All the characters get to play apart in the foiling of The Menace's plains. There are a few times where I had to laugh at the Menace. He was scary at all, just down right silly. I still recommend reading "The Streets of Panic Park."

About the Author
A freelance illustrator for twenty years, Roger Essley has illustrated five picture books and is the author/illustrator of the picture book Reunion. His artwork can be found in books, magazines, and in the collection of a number of museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He teaches classroom workshops and residencies and presents at national and regional conferences.

Linda Rief teaches eighth grade at Oyster River Middle School in Durham, New Hampshire. Her published books include 100 Quickwrites, Inside the Writer's-Reader's Notebook, and Seeking Diversity: Language Arts with Adolescents. With Kylene Beers and Robert Probst she co-edited Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise Into Practice, and for five years she co-edited NCTE's Voices from the Middle journal. In 2000 she was the recipient of NCTE's Edwin A. Hoey Award for Outstanding Middle School Educator in the English Language Arts.

Amy Levy Rocci has 12 years experience as an elementary educator. For the last three years she has developed and implemented an enrichment program that provides critical thinking activities for all students. A presenter at educational venues nationally and locally, Rocci received a BA in Psychology from George Washington University and a MEd from the University of New Hampshire.

Terrific tool for writing and problem solving!

I've been fortunate to have Roger Essley come several times to our school to present to our 4th grade students (and staff) this decade. The children write better and with more detail after learning his methods of Storyboard and TellingBoard writing, with especially good gains for special needs students. We have had those "wow" moments when a child who is shy or doesn't like to write keeps an audience spellbound with his/her story, using TellingBoards in the class conferences. Included in the book are formats for using storyboards not only for narrative, but also for using with non-fiction. His ideas truly will help with reaching all learners in your class! I know it's a cliche to say something is a "must-have", but from learing from Essley and using his methods successfully, the book Visual Tools IS a must-have for teachers of writing, reading, and problem solving.

Also: try to get his picture book "Reunion", a great book for boys.

The view point is that each of us learns and grasps concepts differently. Great Read

In "My Friends Call Me Monster", Michael Munroe and his two friends, Daisy and DeWayne sneak into their teacher's, Mrs. Hardesty, house to leave a black cat because Mrs. Hardesty is superstitious. But their teacher is keeping a dark secret hidden in her attic - giant monster eggs that are ready to hatch.

Mrs. Hardesty comes home early, and the kids discover that their teacher is not human. Daisy and DeWayne escape the house, but Michael decides to go back to the attic. Now the real horror begins....

The second part in the book continues the Horrorland storyline. Michael gets invited to the Horrorland theme park, where he meets Abby Martin. They soon bump into the other kids from previous installments. He helps them learn more about the mysterious Panic Park.

This is a fun book for kids to read. Every kid has a teacher they thought was a monster, but in this book the teacher really is a monster. Great read!

Just An Average Goosebumps Yarn

"Goosebumps HorrorLand" is the latest part of the Goosebumps franchise from author R.L. Stine. These books follow the traditional Goosebumps plot, but with an added twist of a special section of the book that takes place in HorrorLand.

MY FRIENDS CALL ME MONSTER is the 7th book in the Goosebumps HorrorLand series. The story revolves around Michael Monroe. Michael is bigger than most kids his age. It's partially because of his size that his friends have nicknamed him Monster. The other reason is that Michael has a nasty temper. Michael isn't getting along very well with his new teacher, Mrs. Hardesty. She always seems to be giving him a hard time and punishes him when she lets others off the hook. After having to spend a Saturday with two other friends picking through garbage Michael decides to get even. Mrs. Hardesty is extremely superstitious and he convinces his friends to sneak into her house with him and release a black cat. While there, they discover something very strange which eventually leads Michael trying to save the world by himself.

The HorrorLand part of the book after the main story has Michael and the other Very Special Guests of the park trying to find a mirror as well as information about Panic Park.

The last part of the book includes a chapter from BE CAREFUL FOR WHAT YOU WISH FOR, part of the map for HorrorLand, two pictures of attractions in Panic Park, and the application form for monsters to work at HorrorLand.

I've read several books in the Goosebumps franchise and MY FRIENDS CALL ME MONSTER seems like a rehash of some previous Goosebumps titles, e.g. THE GIRL WHO CRIED MONSTER. The writing in Goosebumps has never been extraordinary and MY FRIENDS CALL ME MONSTER is no different. However, the third-through sixth grade students who these books are aimed at aren't looking for great writing, just a decent scary or at least suspenseful story.

After reading the book, I am curious to read the other titles in the Goosebumps HorrorLand series just to read the complete HorrorLand arc. This isn't a terrible Goosebumps style book, but it's not a great example of one either.

I always try to think positively, even when I'm DOOMED!

R.L. Stine's Horrorland books have been a disappointment, Scream of the Haunted Mask notwithstanding. Granted, I'm writing as a cynical 20 year old now and not the 10 year old who was captivated by the original books, but I can still read some of the original books and find them entertaining. These books haven't had much effect on me, on the whole.

My Friends Call Me Monster is just an odd book, even by Goosebumps standards. Throughout the book is written in such an over-the-top style with lots of bizarre prose that it's impossible to take it seriously. Stine's never been Tolstoy or Stephen King, but some of the stuff here is just off-the-wall bizarre - my favorite line being "I always try to think positively, even when I'm DOOMED!" - that it begs the question of what Stine's been smoking over the last decade. Kids probably won't notice or care, but for me, a lifelong fan of the series, it's strikingly bizarre. Part of me wants to believe that this is one of the books where Stine is deliberately writing a comedy rather than a scary story - Attack of the Mutant and You Can't Scare Me! being other examples from the original series. The cynical part of me, however, thinks Stine has lost his touch and needed to hang his pen up long ago. Also, the story is only 95 pages; it might have been better (theoretically) if it had at least 20 more pages to allow the story to develop. The plot is basically recycled from Calling All Creeps, The Girl Who Cried Monster, and the short story Teacher's Pet, so if you're familiar with those Goosebumps books you can probably guess what's going on here.

That said, I enjoyed My Friends Call Me Monster on some level, and it's better than most of the Horrorland Books so far. But as the series continues along, it seems increasingly unlikely that we'll see a Horrorland book the equivalent of Night of the Living Dummy or The Ghost Next Door.

More enjoyable than the original

Sam Faulkner's life is unusual and complicated. His mother died in a car crash, and his father Allan has disappeared from their antique bookstore. While searching the store, Sam discovers a secret room with clues and messages that Allan is trapped in time --- in the year 1462 in Bran, the castle of Vlad Tepes, popularly known as Dracula.

Through trial and error, Sam has figured out how to travel through time, but he cannot predict when, or where, he lands. These trips are taking their toll on him, and returning to the present is almost impossible to control. Even worse, explaining his long absences and devising excuses for the condition of his appearance after he comes back are proving to be more difficult and less believable.

Sam lives with his grandparents, Aunt Evelyn and Cousin Lily. Because of Sam's behavior and his lengthy unexplained disappearances, Evelyn is convinced that Sam is on drugs and corrupting Lily. Evelyn warns Lily to stay away from Sam and, with the support of her boyfriend Rudolf, threatens to send him to a military school if he doesn't change his ways. But Lily stands by her cousin and even joins Sam on his quest to rescue his father.

In THE GATE OF DAYS, Sam and Lily travel to a cave in prehistoric times, to the days of Roman slavery and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and to Depression-era Chicago, where they meet a special relative and get help from some kind-hearted neighbors. They also encounter a travel guide along the way. But can he be trusted? And who is trying to prevent Sam from returning after his trips through time?

In this sequel to THE BOOK OF TIME, the suspense and danger at home in the present and at the unpredictable destinations in the past build as Sam and Lily seek out their ultimate destination to rescue Sam's father. Because of the building tension and the character development of both young protagonists, I enjoyed Book II more than the original. Also appealing are the gentle history lessons Sam and Lily experience as they travel through time and meet famous and not-so-famous individuals. The ending has a twist that I didn't anticipate, and I look forward to following them on their adventures through time in Book III: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE.

Even better the the first Book of Time!

I became hooked on this trilogy series instantly and now will await the third book in September....This writer takes the reader back in time again and again and leaves you wanting more. Working in a K8 library I am constantly reading Juv. Fiction as to be able to give the kids some great reading ideas! This is for lovers of adventure and mystery. Adults and kids alike!

This is an AMAZING photographic venture into the world of butterflies and moths!

Sometimes people are confused as to the difference between a moth and a butterfly. Once you learn that a butterfly's antennae are thin with little knobs on the end of them and a moth's are feathery you'll be come an instant expert when you are on a nature field trip. There are other little differences as well. For example, moths tend to "have fatter bodies covered with furry hairs,' while butterflies tend to be more colorful and "rest with their wings open, not closed." There are many things to learn about these fascinating creatures!

In this book you'll be able to take a look at many enlarged photographic examples of both moths and butterflies, among them the very interesting metamorphosis of a monarch butterfly. You'll learn about many unusual ways they defend themselves, their diets, their body composition, their life cycle (metamorphosis), their habitats, their behavior, the differences between moths and butterflies, how they fly, their lifespan and more. You'll get to see a big surprise on page 26, but you'll have to read to the book to discover it. Did you know there is a "rain forest caterpillar [that] twists its body around and puffs up its front end to look like a poisonous snake?" Now that is a sight you won't want to miss!

This was one of the most amazing books I've ever read on butterflies and moths, not so much for the text, but rather for the stunning photographs. The text was very informative and had a slight poetic lilt to it, without detracting from the educational task at hand, which I totally enjoyed. For example, "Butterflies outfox birds with their helter-skelter flight. It's hard to catch something that bobs and skips through the air." In the back of the book is a glossary and an index. AND you'll get a chance to meet Nic himself as he talks about his passion and interest in his subject. One picture is worth a thousand words, so dear reader, you have a lot of reading to do in this fantastic book!

Wonderful resource!

I bought this book after one of my students at school brought it for show and tell. I had been thinking of writing a story involving butterfiles, and this book contains many facts not commonly found in other works. Gorgeous photographs depict the stages of life, making it easy for even the youngest readers to grasp. My own children at home are now enjoying this book as well.

Young readers will ooh and aah!

As soon as you grab a hold of one of Nic Bishop's amazing children's books, you'll be a fan for life. Nic Bishop has brought his vast knowledge of biology to life through his enlightening nonfiction books on frogs, spiders, and many more. So it was only time before he added Nic Bishop Butterflies And Moths to the mix.

What stands apart from all other nonfiction picture books are the lengths Nic Bishop goes to just to capture the images for his books. The breathtaking full-page pictures will introduce young readers to the beauty of these amazing creatures, from the shockingly bright blue morpho butterfly to the nearly transparent glasswing butterfly to the mouthless luna moth.

cute story

Owen Foote loves science. He is hoping to get into a class who's teacher loves science and teaches lots of neat science topics. He thinks the best way to get in is to win first prize in the school science fair. He and his best friend Joseph try and come with a winning project. Joseph doens't want to do the same things that Owen does and this causes some problems. Can they work together or will their friendship end?

What did you like or not like about the book?

The book was easy to read. It's a great choice of kids who are just starting to read chapter books.

We do recommend this book. The is one of several books about Owen Foote. He is a character that kids can relate to well.

Owen wants to be a real scientist and has high hopes of getting into the top science class in school: the best way is for him to win first prize in a school science fair, but their project lizard is uncooperative and so is his helper friend. How will Owen become successful if even his experiments go wrong? A funny story of goals and achievements - and friendship.

Easy to Read and Interesting

This is an easily read early chapter book about third-grader Owen, who with his friend Joseph undertakes a science fair project: raising a lizard named Chuck. Nothing goes right, which causes the boys great frustration -- and might mean that they don't get into Mr. Wozniak's class next year, Mr. Wozniak being a very popular science-minded fourth grade teacher. Fun and funny, but also realistic in introducing setbacks and solutions.
