Kendra’s longing for love leads her too quickly into a physical relationship with hot Nashawn. Kendra doesn’t want sex, in part because Nana threatens to have her physically “checked” to confirm her virginity, but Nashawn suggests oral and anal sex as alternatives to traditional intercourse. Kendra agrees, and she is guilt ridden over the acts (which are frankly discussed) as well as confused by the passion she feels. Her father, who is in a dead-end job as a snack-food truck driver, rounds out the strong secondary characters. Kendra’s talent at architectural drawing and set design will attract artistic teens, while her realistic daily problems with friends, family, and boys will appeal to a wide audience. Gritty & Honest

Kendra Williamson is fourteen years old and she attends North Bronx High School for Arts and Communications. She loves to draw houses and floor plans; a skill that will lead to a promising career in the future. She's not focusing a whole lot on future plans, though. The main thing that's on her mind, what she wants more than anything, is to spend more time with her mother, Renee.

Kendra lives with her Nana, Valerie. Renee, who gave birth to Kendra in ninth grade, missed ten years of her daughter's life while she finished high school, then college and then grad school. Now she's graduating from Princeton with a PhD and Kendra believes she will finally have a "real" mother. A mother who will be around for more than just minutes at a time and will care about the things she cares about. A mother who will want her. But, sadly, once Renee is back in the Bronx the neglect continues so, desperate for attention, Kendra makes a choice that surprises even her. A choice she regrets, but repeats even though she feels so bad about herself after the first time.

I felt so bad for Kendra. The girl goes out there and makes choices she probably wouldn't have made if somebody would have taken the time to talk to her and, most of all, truly love her. Her mother obviously loved herself more than she loved her daughter. Renee was only concerned about what she wanted and didn't give Kendra a second thought. I was so glad Kendra's Nana cared enough about her granddaughter to raise her. Valerie loved Kendra the best way she knew how, but her way was a bit controlling and smothering. And Kendra's dad, Kenny? Well, it seemed he was still trying to find his own way in the world.

The author was not playin' when she penned this novel. Teenagers are way more mature, way more knowledgeable these days and Coe Booth did not hold back when she wrote about the sexual experiences of her young characters. The things fourteen year old Kendra did really shocked and disgusted me. I was saddened by her choices, and disappointed to find out that some of today's young people are making the same choices.

There is one thing I learned from reading this book that I did not care to know, and there was quite a bit of profanity to overlook, but this was a good story. And, like I mentioned before, Coe Booth was not playin'! So, if you can handle the truth about the choices "some" young people are making when it comes to sex, then you might want to read this book.

Kendra is trying to figure out her place in life. She's definitely not full of confidence, like her cousin and friend, Adonna. Her mom is busy with school and she lives with her Nana, who is constantly trying to mold her into the daughter that she wanted.

Joining the stage crew for the school play is the start of Kendra's journey. Her ideas and designs are praised and noticed, especially by Nashawn. He's one of the hottest guys in school. The problem is, Adonna has her eyes on him, too. Three's a crowd, that's for sure.

Whatever Adonna wants, she's determined to get, no matter who gets hurt.

KENDRA was a very good novel. Throughout the book, you get to know Kendra and see her grow up. She makes some choices that aren't approved by everyone, but she's full of good character and has a strong heart.

About the Author

I absolutely love P.B. Kerr's series about these children! This is another book in a refreshing series. I have recommended it to both students and adults!

Terracotta terror

The fourth novel in the Children of the Lamp series features the terracotta warriors, thousands of six foot tall clay statues buried with the Chinese Emperor of Qin, somewhere back in 210 BC. These statues were for protection as well as to ensure that the Emperor had a full army at his disposal in the afterlife. As the story goes, someone is reanimating these ancient warriors, and possessing them with evil spirits.

Meanwhile, on the good Djinn side, Djinn twins John and Phillipa Gaunt, their Uncle Nimrod and the crew head off to find Faustina Sachertorte (who is in the Djinn equivalent of suspended animation) in the hopes of reviving her to take the place of the twins' mother as the hard-hearted and extremely logical Blue Djinn of Babylon. This requires careful planning, because their father is under a Methusaleh binding that makes him age rapidly once the twins aren't at home, which of course they aren't.

Back on the other side, Faustina's brother Dybbuk is acting up, misusing his powers in exchange for fifteen minutes of fame as the next (and much improved) David Copperfield. Unfortunately his antics are noticed by his father, Iblis, the leader of the Ifrit (a.k.a. the really bad Djinn) and before he realizes it, Dybbuk is being used to set up a really big scam that could change the balance of good and evil.

Better than book three, Cobra King Of Kathmandu (Children Of The Lamp), this one takes the reader to exotic locations with exotic food, contains a lot of surprises, and features two very famous gentlemen from the past. The action-packed adventure comes to a dramatic pause at the end, which is clearly not the end of the story, but the way forward to the next book. Fans of the series won't be disappointed with this one.

goosebumps books are a huge hit with us. anything that can make an 8 year old read and really enjoy it is wonderful. my 8 year old loves this book; he's read it at least 4 times since he got it for christmas. would recommend.

Predictable, but Likeable

In this third installment, Matt Daniels is being tormented by his neighbor, Bradley. He wants to dress just like him and follow him wherever he goes. He even copies Matt's answers to the science test.

Bradley buys a plastic egg that contained monster blood and leaves it at Matt's house. Matt accidentally spills a few drops on his ivory plant. The next morning the plant had tripled in size.

His little sister, Livvy, puts a few drops of monster blood into Bradley's cereal. She confesses to Matt and he starts to worry what might happen to Bradley. He is shocked when he finds out that the cereal bowls were switched. He ate the monster blood!

During his swim meet, he starts to grow just like his ivory plant. How will he stop growing?

The second story picks up in "Horrorland" from the previous book. Britney and Molly are still missing. Matt, Billy and Sheena (who is now invisible) are being chased by two MP Horrors. They want the mysterious key card that was given to Billy.

The kids hide from the Horrors in the Dr. Twisted's Science Lab. Billy opens a jar and released the monster blood.

The first story is a little predictable but at the same time it's still enjoyable. Once again the second story is only 30 pages and ends in a cliffhanger. I think the mini-stories in each book are very clever. This keeps you wanting to read more Goosebumps.

Goosebumps HorrorLand Monster Blood for Breakfast is a cool book. One day after school Bradley ordered monster blood on Matt's laptop. Monster blood is something that starts out in an egg and if you eat it, it makes you grow nine feet tall for 12 hours. The monster blood got in Matt's ivy plant and when Matt watered it, it started growing. The next morning, Matt's sister Livvy had snuck up on the monster blood and she put it in Bradley's cereal bowl. Then Bradley switched bowls with Matt and then Matt ate the monster blood! After school Matt started to grow and he could barely fit his legs in his swim suit for the swim race. When Matt jumped in the water he started to stretch out like crazy until he was eight feet tall and he was swimming like a machine. He won the swimming race! Then his swim suit tore off and then he was nine feet tall! He covered himself with some towels and ran to Bradley's house and the 12 hours were over and he shrank back to normal.

I recommend that eight-year-old boys read this book because they will understand it.

We love our "My First Read and Learn Bible" and this is a nice companion.

We have this and the "My First Read and Learn Bible" which my daughter really loves. She specifically requests it over and over at bedtime. I actually like the artwork... it's very simple and not over-the-top cheesy. The pastel quilt on the cover is a bit babyish for my taste. The words are not printed on a solid color background as they are in the My First R&L Bible, and they are in different fonts making it slightly trickier for a young reader to decipher I'd wager.

I'm giving it 4-stars instead of 5 because it's a book of prayers and you can't sit down to read it like a story. I've never found books with rhyming prayers an interesting read, personally. But it will probably be nice for a reading child to read for themselves and certainly is a nice companion to our "R&L Bible" book found here: My First Read And Learn Bible

There are a lot of goofy bible kiddie books on the market that I really don't care for. But this one is simple and to the point. I like the simple language because she can easily memorize the words and I can fill in with my own details of the story when I want to. I also like that it's a board book because it's durable and the pages are easy for a toddler to turn.

The front and back cover are padded, which is a nice touch.

Some of the simplest yet most beautiful parayers I have read.

Some of the sweetest, kindest, and most thoughtful prayers for children available in print. These prayers are so unique among books of this topic because the author has a wonderful understanding of theology and does not have a liberal or conservative bend on her material(seem mostly for Protestant families but could easily be for those more Orthodox). What makes these prayers so great are the deceptively simple yet complete messages in them. She includes prayers that cover most events from special days like Thanksgiving to typical bedtime prayers. Most importantly these teach children to think of others and that God values them personally. This book is written with a young child's understanding of the world but the message I take from them is so good I use them for myself and enjoy reading these with my daughter. A great way to introduce God and religion without doctrine getting in the way.

Great kids book

This book was easy to read to my kids 4yo. We could go to a specific time of day (nighttime) and say a sweet prayer or two. They always wanted the birthday prayer since it had a cake picture with it. The pictures were very sweet. You can read the whole book together quickly (if they like bedtime stories) or just go to one prayer for spring or summer. We talk about a topic and they ask, maybe our prayer book has something about it, and we go it it and see. They love it.

After the heartwarming compilation of four heartwarming stories in Mistletoe, Point Books once more brings together four authors to create another four sizzling stories that go perfectly with the summer heat. Pull up a towel and a big glass of lemonade, because the only place you will be going is inside the minds of four girls ready to accomplish what they have been wanting the most during summer.

Lauren Myracle brings us Megan, who is finally turning 18, in MISS INDEPENDENT! The only thing that seems to be on her mind is Pete, the boy she met at the preschool where she worked. Well, that and trying to keep up with her cousin, Porter Ann. The first moment Megan and Pete laid eyes on each other, there was a definite spark -- at least that's what Megan thought. Title: Fireworks

Author: Niki Burnham, Lauren Myracle, Sarah Mlynowski, and Erin Haft

Rating: Rating varies from story to story, I'll explain in the review.

Review:

I'm writing this review a bit differently than the rest... which I think is perfectly fine, since it's a book of short stories. I'm going to share a couple thoughts about each story and then say a little something about the book as a whole.

1st Story: Miss Independent by Lauren Myracle
I think this story was alright. Not exactly memorable, but really cute for what the whole book is about... summer. I think I really liked how I could relate to the main character and I really liked how there was a cute, happy ending, even if it was a bit predictable. My third favorite story.

2nd Story: A Nice Fling is Hard to Find by Sarah Mlynowski
I think this was my second-favorite story out of all of them. It was really corny, but it was still extremely cute and funny, which is what kept me interested. I also used a quote from this story in a real-life situation, which always scores a book some brownie points. Still, like I said, it was corny, but it was cute. Which worked in this case, where it wouldn't work if this were a full-length novel.

3rd Story: Cabin Fever by Erin Haft
My least favorite story out of the four, but it was by no means bad. I liked the formatting, and the way it was written made an entirely unbelievable story into an only semi-unbelievable story. However, it was corny and predictable, which may have worked with the Sarah Mlynowski story, but it did nothing for this one. Still, it wasn't bad.

4th Story: Night Swimming by Niki Burnham
This story completely blew the rest out of the water... it was by far my favorite, and I'll tell you why. In one fourth of the book I found myself actually caring about the characters and what was going to happen. I also loved the way Niki Burnham put some sort of conflict in there that was a bit deeper than a summer fling, but still found a way to incorporate the fling into it. I could also relate extremely well to the main character, and overall I was just really amazed with the story.

So, as an overview, the fourth was my favorite, and I fully intend on reading something else by Niki Burnham as soon as I am able to check a book out from the library and not let it sit on my shelf for three months. Either that, or I'll buy something when I go to Barnes and Noble tomorrow...

Sometimes my brain melts from the summer heat and all the driving around I do to pools, beaches and playdates. When I saw this four story compilation, I thought it would be perfect for my ever decreasing attention span, especially when I noticed that Sarah Mlynowski and Lauren Myracle had written two of the stories. It couldn't be bad, could it? Nope. Not at all.

"Miss Independent" by Lauren Myracle
Rating: 3.5 stars - I liked it.
My 9.5 year old daughter adores Lauren's Love Ya Bunches series and I thought it was about time that I check out Lauren's writing. She wrote one adorable Cinderella-esque story about two cousins, Porter Ann and Megan. Porter Ann's just finished her freshman year in college and Megan, well, they're about to celebrate her eighteenth birthday not in the usual family, Fourth of July barbeque way, but by going to a new club. Porter Ann is a fun, party girl while Megan is shy and completely obsessed with a guy named Pete. In just these few pages, I loved these girls and wanted to see what would happen when their night ended.

"A Nice Fling is Hard to Find" by Sarah Mlynowski
Rating: 5-stars - I loved it.
I admit that I love Sarah Mlynowski and will now read anything she's written. Fortunately, I've purchased her Magic in Manhattan series and I'm really looking forward to reading it this summer. Here's why: Sarah put me smack in the middle of Lindsays's European tour and suddenly I, too, am on a trans-Atlantic flight sitting alongside her and her best friend Becca and Becca's twin brother Tommy. Lindsay uses her travel journal to relay all her deepest secrets and hopes (from page 55):

Dear TJ (aka Travel Journal),
I'm here! I'm on a plane! I did it!
I can't believe I'm actually going to FRANCE. I am so sophisticated.
Okay, fine, in my ratty sweatpants, t-shirt and ponytail, I am not looking so sophisticated, but that's hardly the point. I AM GOING TO FRANCE. As soon as the plane takes off. In eight--wait, make that seven!-- minutes.

I couldn't believe that Sarah managed to get such great characterizations and a romantic plot full of ohnoes and ummwhathappenedtherereallys in a short story. But, she did and yes, I loved every single word.

"Cabin Fever" by Erin Haft
Rating: 4.5 stars - I really, really liked it.
Don't you hate it when your younger, model-perfect, make-up and designer obsessed little sister tags along to your annual refuge away from her -- summer camp? It's exactly what happens to Molly. And oh what a burden little sister, Dakota, turns out to be. She buddies up with Molly's best-friend-at-camp and what?!? She even seems to be friendly with Molly's long time camp crush. Things couldn't be worse or could they? A sweet story about sisters, friendship and summer love.

"Night Swimming" by Niki Burnham
Rating" 4 stars - I really liked it.
It's time for Wynn to get away from summers in central Minnesota, her job at Dairy Darling and her boss Mean Raymond. She's going to go to take a creative writing class at Wriston College in Delaware. And while she trades her summer of mosquitos for one of warm, East Coast beaches, she feels unsure that she's made the right choice until she meets a few of the dorm's occupants. Maybe it wasn't such a bad decision at all.

As you can tell, these short stories surprised me and made for perfect reading in between the cries of "Mama, watch me!" at the pool. It made me think back to the potential heartbreak and complicated (or were they really?) relationships that only a teenage summer can hold.
