This is a nice progression from the previous sets. It follows along with what they are learning in school. The only con: I'd prefer one book to focus on one long vowel sound and its multiple spellings. When we were studying long E, I had to use 2 different books, one for ee and another for ea and e_e. "Joe's Toe" has Long O spelled oe, and long I spelled i_e. "Chickens" was much better, it focuses on Long A spelled ai, ay, & a_e. I wish they were all more like "Chickens."

You might also want to look at "Now I'm Reading: Amazing Animals" in addition to Bob Books Set 5. Each book focuses more on the multiple spellings of each long vowel.

We homeschool our boys, and we could never do it without the Bob Books. I love this one with the Long vowels, because the only Bob Books we had were for 3 letter words. Great addition to our collection.

It Needs to Be Expanded into Set 5 and 6

Every Bob Book set prior to this one has been perfect for working with my son on developing his ability to read. In particular, I have been impressed with how gradated each book in each set has been, so that he can easily step into each consecutive book with confidence. Set 5, however, tossed far too many new rules into each book without giving sufficient time to practice the rules previously introduced. Had this set been expanded into two sets of eight books, it would have been perfect. I would have happily bought another set if it would have meant that they could have stayed more true to their mission of helping children feel the confidence of reading it by themselves.

A great resource for Ga'Hoolians everywhere!

I picked this book up from my local bookstore, expecting more of a reference book than a story book, and it far surpassed my expectations. While still full of interesting facts such as how the chaws are organized and what they teach, it also has short stories about many of the characters readers of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole will have become familiar with through the series.

I had hoped to start a Guardians of Ga'Hoole roleplaying game, and this will be perfect in helping me introduce my gaming friends to the Hoolian world.

If you like companion books, this is the book for you. As short as it is for an older reader, it is a book I could read again and again.

A Guide Book to the Great Tree

Reading is very slow on this book comparied to the series. What is it best for is learning all about the different owls of the tree, celebrations and other artifacts that make the series tie together. It is more like reading a dictionary of who's who. It is interesting but very technical for the young reader.

Great for Kindergarten Teachers

I am a kindergarten teacher, and I use this book ALL the time. I started using it as we were learning the letters of the alphabet; each week we had a new letter and learned a new song to go with it, fliping back and forth through the book. The kids LOVED these songs so much, that we listen to the tape every day, and they sing the songs on their own! Excellent book and tape!

My younger son (now 19 months) received this book and CD set for his first birthday. He and his 5 year old brother both love it. The songs are so cute. They are all set to familiar tunes, with exceptionally creative lyrics depicting each letter of the alphabet. We keep the book and CD in the car and my older son requests it as soon as we get in. If we arrive at our destination before we reach Z, we have to stay in the car until the end. Unlike some other kids' CDs, this is one that parents will enjoy just as much.

I bought this book and cd set at a scholastic book fair for my early preschool class and they love it. In fact, I love it too. I could listen to this folk music all day. The lyrics are really funny and the kids have really learned the lyrics so we can sing them between times we hear them. Also, I copied the cd to a cassette for the listening center so when they see the book during circle time, maybe those letters are starting to click with them!

Fun, Unusual, and Cool!

I'm a thirteen-year-old girl, and I'll have to say that this is a great crafts set that you MUST get!! It comes with plastic round and flat laces, pony beads, and keychain clips for you to make the scoubidous, boondoggles, and lanyards!!! What attracted me first were the names. I thought, "Scoubidous? Boondoggles?? And lanyards??? What the heck are they??????" But after consideration, I decided to purchase this item, and it turned out to be better than I imagined! The instruction booklet introduces you to 6 different types of crafts you can make, and all of them are exciting and COOL!! These crafts are highly enjoyable, especially if you are fond of making friendship bracelets!! Trust me - you'll love it, so if you think you have enough patience to learn how to make these, go for it! Enjoy!!

There's great fun here for a kid, tween, or adult with the bug to make some cool woven plastic do-hickie's (scoubidous, boondoggles & lanyards!) with the help of excellent directions and clear illustrations.
