More enjoyable than the original

Sam Faulkner's life is unusual and complicated. His mother died in a car crash, and his father Allan has disappeared from their antique bookstore. While searching the store, Sam discovers a secret room with clues and messages that Allan is trapped in time --- in the year 1462 in Bran, the castle of Vlad Tepes, popularly known as Dracula.

Through trial and error, Sam has figured out how to travel through time, but he cannot predict when, or where, he lands. These trips are taking their toll on him, and returning to the present is almost impossible to control. Even worse, explaining his long absences and devising excuses for the condition of his appearance after he comes back are proving to be more difficult and less believable.

Sam lives with his grandparents, Aunt Evelyn and Cousin Lily. Because of Sam's behavior and his lengthy unexplained disappearances, Evelyn is convinced that Sam is on drugs and corrupting Lily. Evelyn warns Lily to stay away from Sam and, with the support of her boyfriend Rudolf, threatens to send him to a military school if he doesn't change his ways. But Lily stands by her cousin and even joins Sam on his quest to rescue his father.

In THE GATE OF DAYS, Sam and Lily travel to a cave in prehistoric times, to the days of Roman slavery and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and to Depression-era Chicago, where they meet a special relative and get help from some kind-hearted neighbors. They also encounter a travel guide along the way. But can he be trusted? And who is trying to prevent Sam from returning after his trips through time?

In this sequel to THE BOOK OF TIME, the suspense and danger at home in the present and at the unpredictable destinations in the past build as Sam and Lily seek out their ultimate destination to rescue Sam's father. Because of the building tension and the character development of both young protagonists, I enjoyed Book II more than the original. Also appealing are the gentle history lessons Sam and Lily experience as they travel through time and meet famous and not-so-famous individuals. The ending has a twist that I didn't anticipate, and I look forward to following them on their adventures through time in Book III: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE.

Even better the the first Book of Time!

I became hooked on this trilogy series instantly and now will await the third book in September....This writer takes the reader back in time again and again and leaves you wanting more. Working in a K8 library I am constantly reading Juv. Fiction as to be able to give the kids some great reading ideas! This is for lovers of adventure and mystery. Adults and kids alike!

I Really enjoyed this book, and the one that came before it. I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy! There is a lot to be learned from this series about other times and places even though it is fantasy.

This is an AMAZING photographic venture into the world of butterflies and moths!

Sometimes people are confused as to the difference between a moth and a butterfly. Once you learn that a butterfly's antennae are thin with little knobs on the end of them and a moth's are feathery you'll be come an instant expert when you are on a nature field trip. There are other little differences as well. For example, moths tend to "have fatter bodies covered with furry hairs,' while butterflies tend to be more colorful and "rest with their wings open, not closed." There are many things to learn about these fascinating creatures!

In this book you'll be able to take a look at many enlarged photographic examples of both moths and butterflies, among them the very interesting metamorphosis of a monarch butterfly. You'll learn about many unusual ways they defend themselves, their diets, their body composition, their life cycle (metamorphosis), their habitats, their behavior, the differences between moths and butterflies, how they fly, their lifespan and more. You'll get to see a big surprise on page 26, but you'll have to read to the book to discover it. Did you know there is a "rain forest caterpillar [that] twists its body around and puffs up its front end to look like a poisonous snake?" Now that is a sight you won't want to miss!

This was one of the most amazing books I've ever read on butterflies and moths, not so much for the text, but rather for the stunning photographs. The text was very informative and had a slight poetic lilt to it, without detracting from the educational task at hand, which I totally enjoyed. For example, "Butterflies outfox birds with their helter-skelter flight. It's hard to catch something that bobs and skips through the air." In the back of the book is a glossary and an index. AND you'll get a chance to meet Nic himself as he talks about his passion and interest in his subject. One picture is worth a thousand words, so dear reader, you have a lot of reading to do in this fantastic book!

Wonderful resource!

I bought this book after one of my students at school brought it for show and tell. I had been thinking of writing a story involving butterfiles, and this book contains many facts not commonly found in other works. Gorgeous photographs depict the stages of life, making it easy for even the youngest readers to grasp. My own children at home are now enjoying this book as well.

cute story

Owen Foote loves science. He is hoping to get into a class who's teacher loves science and teaches lots of neat science topics. He thinks the best way to get in is to win first prize in the school science fair. He and his best friend Joseph try and come with a winning project. Joseph doens't want to do the same things that Owen does and this causes some problems. Can they work together or will their friendship end?

What did you like or not like about the book?

The book was easy to read. It's a great choice of kids who are just starting to read chapter books.

Easy to Read and Interesting

This is an easily read early chapter book about third-grader Owen, who with his friend Joseph undertakes a science fair project: raising a lizard named Chuck. Nothing goes right, which causes the boys great frustration -- and might mean that they don't get into Mr. Wozniak's class next year, Mr. Wozniak being a very popular science-minded fourth grade teacher. Fun and funny, but also realistic in introducing setbacks and solutions.

Cute book, spine is too flimsy

Cute book, my son loves it! The downside is that the spine is coming apart after only a few months. I have another book in this series as well, and it had the same problem. Toddlers are rough on books, obviously, but most of our other books do not have this issue. Pictures attached.

The flimsy binding falls apart almost immediately, but the contents of the books are awesome

This line of books is absolutely amazing, and my toddler just loves them. The simple language is great for a beginning reader, the things they say are very straightforward and to the point, and my toddler loves talking about all the things that dump truck does. However, the binding on these is ridiculously weak. He broke this one within a couple hours of receiving it. We have a lot of board books around the house and none of them have proven this flimsy. The publisher has done a terrible disservice to this author, putting such wonderful books such a terrible weak binding. My toddler loves them so I keep repairing them with tape and glue.

Very disappointed of the 5 pages only 2 even mention the dump truck and talk about other construction equipment, son was disappointed on the lack of dump trucks in a book called I am dump truck

An engaging series for young minds...

What a rewarding series of books! We have the entire series, and several of the other series by the same author, and we've found that the A to Z Mysteries thoroughly engage our first grade daughter.

The books are quite readable for young readers. Our first grader reads and understands what is taking place. There's not a lot of difficult language or concepts, and the author quite often takes the time to describe or define a term that might not be all that familar to a youngster. Our daughter as learned a bit of patience in this regard. She's eager to ask if there's a work she doesn't understand, but she now trusts the author to explain things in the very next sentence.

The mysteries are usually well crafted and interesting. They challenge readers to try to figure out "who did it" and often offer a twist or surprise in the end. The author never cheats - the clues are all there. And when kids figure out who did it before the end, the books remain engaging and fun as an explanation is offered as to why the deed was done.

A word of caution for parents - the children in these books are sometimes in precarious predicaments, but they always end up safe and sound. Nevertheless, if you're looking for a conversation starter, you'll find some within the pages of these books. Do the young detectives (there are three, two boys and a girl) always make the wisest choices while investigating an event? No, they do not. But there are consequences for those choices. The young detectives are never left in harms way for very long, but the author does make use of the "cliffhanger" at chapters' ends. These young detectives are quite self aware, and they are open and honest. They know that a worried mother might disapprove of their efforts to track down the teenager who videotaped a bank robbery, and they talk about it in the book. But the group always travels together, and they usually know when to get an adult involved on their behalf.

You will find the mysteries much easier to solve than those presented in Encyclopedia Brown books, although for older readers of mysteries, the Brown books are very good, too. Younger readers get frustrated with Brown as the solutions to myteries are often over their heads. Not so in the A to Z mysteries.

The author also takes time to develop characters. Several books into the series (if you start with A, which is really the best place to start) you will have gotten to know the personality of each young detective, and other characters recur from book to book.

The writing is as tight as appropriate for young readers, and there's plenty of description to absorb a young mind. The series has some special editions that are available for purchase separately. Those editions are longer, but well worth the read.

This is a fine series and if you can find the complete set, you'll often get a real price break per book. I highly recommend the books, as well as the author's other series (The Capital Mysteries, for example, with different young detectives, all of which take place in Washington D.C.).

"Summer of secrets"

My book was called the summer of secrets and the main character was Darcy and she having a lot of problems at this point in her life. Her mother and father are fighting everyday and every night and she worried that they might get a divorce again and she dose not want that to happen. Why because her father was the one who saved her from bobby {a guy she met right after her boy friend moved away to Detroit}. She went over to his house thinking that they were just going to talk but he tried to rap her but as she was fighting back her father came at a nick of time and saved her. After that she never trusted another guy. Then as she is working she sees her friend Brisanna with a guy. It was her boyfriend and Darcy find out that he is cheating on her with another girl. Darcy tried to tell her but she did not want to believe her so she left it at that. Darcy goes and meets with her current friend tray and copper. Tray tells her that she is having a cook out on the 4th of July and she should come and plus she had a cousin of her that is coming and they could talk and get to know one another. Darcy doesn't want to meet her cousin because she dose not trust any guys at all at this point. Tray also told her that jamee had a new boyfriend copper brother; she wasn't all that worried because it was coppers brother but she was still going to keep an eye on them. Copper tell them that brisanna's boyfriend is giving him trouble at the garage, tell his father that I stole 20 dollars and he spilled the oil all over the garage and all of it is coming out of his pay check. On the 4th of July every body went down to the park when Darcy got there she saw tray with a very tall guy and it was her cousin she felt very uncomfortable with him there but she managed herself. When Copper got to the park he saw brisanna with her boyfriend and he sprinted after him and they started to fight. Darcy tried to stop the fight but trays cousins pulled her by her hip and she got scared and kicked him. Everybody went back home mad. Brisanna calls Darcy and tell her she might be pregnant, but then find out her not and everything is fine and she broke up with her boyfriend. Then she finally talk to her mom and dad and they say that their having a baby. Now all he r problems are gone and Darcy first boyfriend Hakeem so coming back from Detroit and everybody is happily ever after.

I was always stuck reading Drama high series it a really good book but then my friend was reading this book and she said i should try it. I never really wanted to read the books but i gave it a chance but as i started reading i just couldn't put it down.but the only thing they could've changed was how Brisana and Duane dated i liked it but i wanted it to be more fierce. But you should
defently read it!!!!!1

Summer of Secrets is a great book. This book should not be judged by its cover because it is very different from what the covers portrays it to be. At the beginning of the story, Darcy is trying to find out the secret her parents are keeping from her; while she herself is keeping one from them. She did not want to let anyone know what Hakeem attempted to do to her. When she eventually decides to tell her friends she discover an even greater secret. This book nicely relates to todays generation. It includes problems and circumstances many teenagers undergo nowadays. Overall, Summer of Secrets is a nice and interesting book to read.

My son (7 1/2) loves these books! The puzzles are usually challenging and a good tool to push his thinking skills. Scooby Doo is always a winner read and he is eager to figure out the mystery. I ordered several because he wants them all!
