Must Have Book

I purchased this book because I am new to teaching first grade this year. I needed skill lessons and was not sure of how to meet all of my students' needs. This book is SO AMAZING!! It breaks it down into mini lessons, by skill and lists many common reading scenarios that ss strugle with. It also includes many useful mini-lessons, posters, bookmarks and more. I love the fact that the posters and bookmarks have rebus pictures to help them create mental anchors and remember the skills. I would recommend this book, it is a must have for me and the more I read and use it the more I love it.

I teach 2nd grade and this book was very helpful to me. It explains clearly and simply (but still has sufficient details) a variety of learning difficulties in reading and provides specific suggestions for lessons to address these issues.

Only half of the twelve books are different from Set One.

Let me preface this review with the fact that I love the Bob Books; I believe they are one of the best "learn to read" products on the market. My three star rating does not reflect the content of the Bob Books series.

I had read that some people complained that these books were the small, older versions. I did not mind this, however considering the fact that my daughter was about to finish Set One and I wanted Set Two, I am quite disappointed that the first six books in this set are also in Set One! I wouldn't have paid this much for only six books. Upon further research it seems that there are some sets marked "Set Two" that aren't repetitive and this set is an older version. However there is no way to determine which you are getting, older or newer. Buyers, keep this in mind when ordering!

**UPDATE**
I have discovered if you have "Collection One" and have finished that (books 1-18) what you want next is called "Collection Two" (not set two). This will keep you from repeating those six books.

We love BOB books in our family

We love BOB books in our family. We have an emerging reader and have found that many books geared toward this group are just too hard. These books use words that are easy to sound out and usually follow a consonant vowel consonant pattern. The books get a bit more difficult as they progress but it is such small increments that you don't even notice until all of the sudden you realize that the stories are getting a bit more interesting and complex. These books are also nice and short so my daughter doesn't get frustrated trying to read something for very long.

I'm so impressed! I have a 6 year old who just finished kinder and is still not completely confident with reading. He gets frustrated easily and doesn't want to read. I bought these books after reading a good review and i have to say, they work! The stories are short, simple and entertaining. My son wanted to read more! He also was so proud of himself that he could complete each one! I'll be buying the next level!

She is the One and Only !

The adventures led by Mary Poppins are always warm and bright without a speck of evil or darkness, and make me smile. With her, the most far-away things such as the sky, cloud, moon, and stars are drawn nearer, just in front of me, and all turned into some warm and friendly ones. In this book, Mary Poppins introduces me to some lonly Stars who love herbs in a Midsummer's Eve and then to the Man-in-the-Moon who always awake and watch on things, surrounded by stacks of deserted but still lovely stuffs. After the trips with her, you(as well as I) may find yourselves(I really do!) seeing the herb pots and thinking the Stars, or drinking a cup of hot coccoa and being sorry for the Man-in-the-Moon who can't indulge himself with even a cup of soothing drink that will make him sleepy. Mary Poppins is the One and Only who can make us like this !

~~ Nonsensical but great for Mary Poppins fans ~~

If you are not a fan of Mary Poppins you are unlikely to enjoy this book. Set in London, it is Midsummer's Eve, the most magical night of the year. Nothing is the same and the poor Park Keeper is worried about who is breaking the bye-laws. Of course Mary Poppins is present with Michael, Jane with the babies in the perambulator. Bear is hungry so Mrs. Corry tears off one of her fingers. Imagine Bear's surprise when he discovers it is barley sugar! What is Mr. Banks all excited about? How about Orion? Will the Park Keeper really find true love by walking backwards after having rubbed cucumber behind his ears? Many, many more characters are involved in this definitely nonsensical story at times and in fact as we read it aloud, I am sure some of it went over the children's heads. HOWEVER it was a fun read but would wait for your children to be at least 8+ before reading it.

fictional novel that focuses on Lonnie's love for basketball

Hoops, by Walter Dean Myers is a fast paced, action packed, fictional novel that focuses on Lonnie's love for basketball; as he lives in a dangerous environment. In the story, Lonnie because he lives in a dangerous environment he acts in which other people in his area are doing; which in his case is negative. For example, there was a part of the story when teenagers were stealing cargo from a truck, while the driver was inside a store talking to someone; when Lonnie saw this happen he decided to do it as well. This tells me that Lonnie is following the people that think they are above the law. Not only is their negative characters and plots in this novel, but there is also positive as well; like the character Cal One reason why he brings a positive plot because, Cal was a amazing professional basketball player, but then one day he made a horrible mistake that ruined his career and banned him from playing in the NBA anymore. With this memory of what messed up his life he tries to help Lonnie not make the same mistake he made. Hoops doesn't just have unique plots, it also has conflicts that will continue through the whole story. An example of this is when, the story first tells the readers about someone who made the deal with Cal, that messed up his life and career and his name was Tyrone. Later on we find out that Tyrone was trying to do the same thing to Lonnie; at the end the conflict between Cal and Tyrone becomes so violent and negative that Tyrone at the end kills Cal, but luckily Tyrone goes to jail at the end. So in my opinion hoops is a great book that has a fast paced plot, and great characters, i recommend this book to people who like basketball and action packed books.

A nice book for a child with low self esteem.

I was given this book as a child.
I was going through some issues as a child and I would frequently scream at the top of my lungs about how much I hated myself.
I liked this book a lot.
I would read it all the time.
It didn't cure my low-self esteem but it made me comfortable.

## New face. Old nightmare.

N.B. This review is for Goosebumps #36: The Haunted Mask II. Currently, Amazon has both Haunted Mask pages combined.

A good, old-fashioned Halloween yarn is what this series does best. The Haunted Mask II is a direct sequel to Carly Beth's early Goosebumps adventure, which also continues to be a favorite of mine. It's the following Halloween, and Carly Beth, having lived through the nightmare of bonding to that devilish mask, is no longer the scaredy-cat she once was.

She's also no longer the narrator -- instead, this sequel follows one of Carly Beth's old bullies, Steve, as he deals with coaching a team of rabid animals (i.e., first-graders). The kids treat him like dirt, and with Halloween approaching, he hopes to out-do Carly Beth's horrific adventure and really scare the pants off those obnoxious kids.

The Unloved, as the haunted masks are known, are some of R.L. Stine's most creative monsters. Partially, it's because of the suggested mythology behind them; with a slew of masks desperate to tell their tale, we're limited to only experiencing a small handful of these ghastly monsters. The masks are ugly, warm, pulsing, fleshy Halloween masks that look utterly real, and throb with a desire to be worn. Once a mischievous soul dons the mask, it physically, painfully merges with that person, and the mask's personality merges with the wearer's.

Last year, Carly Beth wore the mask of what's best described as a demon; Steve, on the other hand, grabbed the mask of a dying old man covered in necrotic tissue, spiders, and a single rotting tooth. The old man is also emotionally haunted by loneliness, weakness, depression, and self-loathing anger.

Having a kid, especially a joker like Steven, take on the characteristics and feelings of someone so worn-out and unhappy is pretty rough, and the looming danger of simply running out of time feels very real. It's darker than the first, and I greatly appreciate the villain not being black-and-white, but uncomfortably grey and sympathetic.

The Haunted Mask books are a series highlight, and still hold up exceptionally well as creepy Halloween tales.

I read this for nostalgia sake, and it remains a fun read. However, I wish the book had more scenes and did less explaining and more showing - I rather learn for myself that it is scary, rather than be told!

This book has so many open ended activites to use in centers that the possibilities are endless. The activities focus on three main areas-Comprehension, Fluency, and word study. What is really helpful is that there are activites at 3 different levels for all areas, which makes planning a breeze. I wish I had found this book years ago instead of wasting my time making file folder games,etc. Along with the three centers represented in this book I will have a writing and listening center--and I am set for the year!

This book has some great and usable ideas. Some the pages were a bit wordy for first grade and I was expecting a bit more from the book, but I did find a lot that I can add to my centers right away.
