The War of the Ember

A nice conclusion for this series of books. I enjoyed the whole series very much and learned a lot about owls in the process. Realize that they are written for children but are a delightful read for adults as well. As always there is the conflict of good and evil, with evil being vanquished in the last novel. It also teaches of harmony among all creatures, big or small and among varying species.

And I think that the book could have been SO much longer!
It just seemed to end so quickly!

These little secrets and little games are becoming a little too dangerous too fast.

Zoey knows that if she hadn't taken that one step away from Audra, she would be the one who would have fallen in the water. Sure, she saved her life, but that doesn't matter when she is the one sitting in the back of a police car, with Audra's life in danger. It may have been self-defense, but no one was there to back Zoey up, and with her past, it's going to be hard to defend herself. Will her dad shake his head in disgust or help her out?

After Tom reached his breaking point, and with Chad oblivious to what his supposedly best friend thought about him, the two went at it. Tom survived while Chad went into a coma. Once Chad was whisked away to the hospital, Tom finally understood what he did, now wanting to be his friend once again. But can Chad even wake up to forgive him?

Allison is terrified with the events that have happened. First, her mother was taken to jail, her dad left, and now her ex-boyfriend is in the hospital. She definitely doesn't need anything else to happen. Of course, that would be Kelly's job to make sure it does. She was a little uncaring with what happened with Chad, btt only Allison saw her true colors. It wouldn't hurt Kelly to act like a loving girlfriend, since her mother is an actress.

Tom's field test proves to be a load of bull

In this galvanizing addition to the "Ghosthunters" series, Tom has to identify and capture an unclassified ghost as the final step to being awarded his GhostHunting Diploma. Everybody, including Tom, thinks that this is a mere formality, because as we all know, he has already defeated ghosts in Category Six, and the field test requires capturing a mere Category Three specimen.

The thing is, there's a new guy on the Examining Board, and he's changed the rules a bit, so that the apparently routine task becomes just a little more challenging. Tom is only allowed one assistant for the assignment, and that means that he has to choose between Hetty Hyssop and Hugo the Averagely Spooky Ghost. Logistics demands that he choose the one with a driver's license, and of course the other isn't too pleased about it.

When they arrive at the old village of Bogpool, they find it buzzing with ghostly energy, and soon learn that the village is a veritable ghost-magnet, and that the ghosts there don't much care for Ghost Hunters of any sort. The particular ghost required for the assignment turns out to be a rather unpleasant NEPGA (which we are told is a Negative Projection of a Ghostly Apparition), which would have been all well and good if it hadn't let on that it was really the "Twelfth Messenger", and believe me, this sounds a lot nicer than it actually turns out to be.

It isn't long before the earth starts moving and the mud starts bubbling, and the intrepid team of Hyssop & Co (plus a new friend) find themselves fighting for their lives. Ghosts of all sorts herald the arrival of the terrible "Muddy Monster of Doom" and his dreaded sidekick the "Thirteenth Messenger", and this definitely seems like one assignment doomed for failure.

The final chapters will have you holding your breath, making this a truly breathtaking experience, and trust me, that's no bull.

This is one of Cornelia Funke's best ghost hunter books. I am a third grade teacher and have read the ghosthunter series to my class. They can't get enough. They hang on every word and when I stop reading they plead with me to continue. Cornelia Funke sparks a love for reading with her wildly witty and creative characters. There is just the right mix of humor, excitement, and good scary fun as well as some unlikely heroes! I would recommend this book to anyone young or old who likes a little action and a whole lot of fun!

Jill Santopolo is not a super sleuth in training, though she does know how to open locked doors with her MetroCard, where she lives in New York City. She is the author of An Alec Flint Mystery: THE NINA, THE PINTA, AND THE VANISHING TREASURE, as well as Alec Flint's second mystery, THE RANSOM NOTE BLUES, both published by Orchard Books. Fourth grader Alec Flint knows what he wants to do with his life --- he would like to be a super sleuth. He already has a detective's watch and a pen that writes even while upside down, and is aware of the advantages of having pockets. But he also knows that he has lots more to learn and needs to find a trustworthy partner. So for now, Alec is a super sleuth-in-training. He does have the advantage of his dad being an undercover police officer, and it's through him that he stumbles upon his first case.

The museum has become the victim of a robbery. A thief has stolen the entire Christopher Columbus exhibit, including gold coins, a journal and a telescope, among other priceless items. The police call on Alec's dad to check out the burglary, and Alec tags along with him, eager to start gathering his own clues. But before he can get too far, Alec has to show up for school. Little does he know that he has two surprises waiting for him on this day.

First, Alec takes notice of the new girl in his class. Gina seems really smart, always getting the morning's riddles and math puzzles figured out correctly. Plus, she knows a secret code and offers to share with Alec. Could she be the perfect crime-solving partner? Alec decides to take a chance and ask her, and she says yes. As he fills her in on what he knows of the museum whodunit so far, they stumble upon a second mystery. The school's art teacher is missing. Alec and Gina begin digging around for clues, including sneaking into the empty art classroom after school, visiting the library and searching the museum. Will they be able to solve the two crimes and be on their way to becoming super sleuths?

The amazing Alec Flint erupts from the ingenious mind of Jill Santopolo, billowing out with clever mysteries, mind-challenging riddles and lots of good, wholesome fun. Her characters are diverse, believable and likable (at least to the good guys). Alec is especially admirable, providing an awesome role model for young people. Santopolo writes with a flowing grace that's so in touch with her audience. She adds in a dash of humor and wonderfully descriptive words that all add up to a fast-moving story and an exciting plot line. Readers will quickly become fans and adamantly demand more from this talented writer.

Jill Santopolo's new book is a well-crafted story about the adventures of Alec Flint. Reviewers have hailed this book as being the 'next Encyclopedia Brown', and they are right! Her character portrayal of Alec is witty and engaging, and during today's read-aloud time in my first grade classroom, my students were 'hooked' immediately. We already can't wait for the next installment of Alec Flint's escapades!

unlike the crap in the New Yorker

I grew up with this book and it inspired me to read more poetry and eventually write it as well. It is "accessible" and earthy and eclectic (if I may make a comparison, unlike the crap in the New Yorker. :) There is no pretense in this collection and if not all, then most of the poems selected will strike a note in you. As a for instance, many of my parents generation had heard Richard Cory but it wasn't until I picked up Mindscapes that I was treated to it and many others of similar weight and caliber. You won't regret having it by your bedside.

This was a fantastic book! I loved it

I'm not really much of a poetry reader, but I read everything in this book at least twice. From the tender poems like "Fueled" to the wonderful irony in "The World is a Beautiful Place" to the sheer morbid wackiness of "Cocaine Lil" there wasn't anything I didn't love. Richard Peck also did a fantastic job on the introduction, and it's almost worth buying the book just to read the introductory pages.

With Homecoming just around the corner, Marnie and Nola have to get their problems solved in order to have a decent night.

After a whirlwind of events, the ex-best friends' roles are totally reversed.

Once Marnie was confronted by Lizette at the secret password party about her "relationship" with Sawyer, the majors dropped her in a heartbeat. Not only the majors but also Dane, who, although he says he doesn't believe what Lizette said, finds that it is better to keep his reputation intact then to stay with Marnie. Things get even worse when Marnie's perfect sister, Erin, comes home and finds the Fitzpatrick name is ruined -- all because of her little sister. Even Erin can't find it in herself to defend Marnie.

For Nola, on the other hand, things are looking a lot brighter. Matt is starting to open up with her about his mom and they seem to be getting a lot closer, especially since Riley isn't near them to get in Nola's way. Not only that, but Dane is still setting his eyes on Nola, which only makes the other cute guys at school want Nola, too. This could just possibly mean that Nola is in, except she might not want to be.

With Homecoming closing in on the girls, the crown is up for grabs, secret relationships will be revealed, and the chase is on for the perfect date, since you need someone to watch your back when everyone is aiming at you.

With what seems to be the last novel in the IN OR OUT series, Claudia Gabel wraps it up nicely, tying up all of the loose ends and helping us see what true friends are all about. Just remember, being out is always better then being in.

Best of The Series!!!

In or Out is the Best series ever!! In or Out, Loves Me, Loves Me Not, and Sweet and Vicous were so amazing. I didn't think the series could get any better...until now! The In or Out series is a book series that I am sure that alot of people can relate to. I know I can, which is what makes these books so fantasically fun to read. Friends Close, Enemies Closer was just what all the fans were waiting for...full of romance, cat-fights, apologies, damaged friendships, ended friendships, and repaired friendships, too!

The First Rambo?

Written in 1974 and then re-released in a new 2002 edition, Mr. Majestyk
is an average crime, revenge, Western action novel. In 1981 First Blood, the original Rambo novel by David Morrell appeared, and the two books have
some similarities: The protagonist was in Viet Nam, learned to kill skillfully and silently in the jungle; upon return to a sparsely populated
area, he wanted to live alone; when hasselled by the police, his steely
nature appeared; both characters spend the rest of the novel seeking to
avenge wrongful treatment. Maybe this is true of many novels during the post-war period, but the parallels were interesting.
As for style, it's lean prose with fairly ordinary dialogue. Overall,
not a word wasted.

A light, quick read characters are not too deeply developed but if you are looking for a good summer beach read that does not require too much thought, that pulls you along this is a good choice

Outstanding suspense wrapped in character development

The more I read Elmore Leonard the more I appreciate movies made from his authentic, down-to-earth stories.

Every scene he depicts is shown through the eyes of someone each of us knows as a friend or an acquaintance instead of from some hifalutin artistic writer in love with words or his own voice.

Mr. Majestyk, the movie, is one of those rare movies that is both as good as the novel and stays true to the novel itself. Probably it stays true because Elmore Leonard writes in pictures instead of in five syllable words. Also, perhaps, because Mr. Leonard is a master story teller - C. William Anderson, aka Travis C. Ward.

There is more --- the book has bonus materials for your reading enjoyment and to ease your effort to complete your collection of Elmore Leonard titles.

I promise you this...Read one Elmore Leonard story and you'll bust a gut to get the next, and the next, and the next.

"halloween and egypt and mummies... oh, my i admit it, i am a fraidymouse. halloween scares me out of my fur this year, i got an urgent message from my friend, professor sandsnout, just before halloween. he needed my help, so i rushed off to the egyptian mouseum to find him. but i didnt expect to find a real, a live mummie,too oh, whats a fraidymouse to do."

Parental comment: These newer 'Stilton' books have more to offer than the older ones. That being mare extra side-stories besides the main story-line. Her alittle ancient egypt, the sphinx, hieroglyphics.......

A fantastic find!

We spotted The Mummy With No Name and picked it up on a whim. My son loves books, but usually will only sit through a pretty short one. We read about 50 pages together before stopping and the next day he brought it to me to finish the other 50. When we finished he told me that all he wants from Santa this year is more Geronimo books!
