From the Back Cover
In Accelerated Vocabulary Instruction Nancy Akhavan provides a comprehensive guide to creating word-rich, print-infused classrooms for developing vocabularies that provide access to the core curriculum. Within powerful units that focus on conceptual vocabulary and span the school year, she presents strategies, graphic organizers, ready-to-use overhead transparencies, individual record sheets, and clear explanations of the current research that show why good instruction is central to students' word acquisition, which in turn is a major factor in closing the achievement gap and preparing students for future success.

To help you connect word learning to content units, Akhavan shows you how to:
* brainstorm words children already know that are connected to a theme or content area
* demonstrate how to think about words and how to remember word meanings
* teach explicit vocabulary lessons that center on new concepts and meanings
* encourage and support wide reading
* discover words, share them with the class, and invite students to do the same
* invite students to become word sleuths--to find words they want to learn, or discuss new word meanings and use

Accelerated Vocabulary Instruction is chock-full of explicit, engaging lessons that draw from children's literature and information-rich content area textbooks. It all adds up to a "book about words" that may well transform your students' learning lives.

In the book, The Cruisers, Book 1, Alexander (aka Zander) and his group of friends known as The Cruisers, write a newspaper article titled “Life on the high C’s” arguing against what Mr. Culpepper, the assistant principal, believes in - getting A’s and B’s. The Cruisers believe that C’s are just as fine as A’s and B’s. Mr. Culpepper gets mad and he almost kicks The Cruisers out of Da Vinci Academy, a school for the gifted and talented in Harlem, New York City. But, Mr. Culpepper says to The Cruisers that if they want to stay at Da Vinci Academy, they have to redeem themselves. In history the eighth grade starts studying the Civil War and the teacher breaks the eighth grade into groups representing the North and South but The Cruisers have to redeem themselves by being the peacekeepers to stop the mock Civil War from ever happening.

The Cruisers are made up of four eighth grade kids - Zander, Kambui, Bobbi, and LaShonda. They all don’t have good grades but are always looking out for each other.
Zander, the leader of The Cruisers, loves Language Arts and PE and wants to write screenplays when he grows up. Also, he likes Da Vinci Academy because there aren’t a lot of fights. Kambui is Zanders best friend and loves photography. His dad is in jail but he lives with his grandmother, and he never backs down from a fight. Bobbi has a very big passion for math, and has A’s in math but in everything else she has C’s and D’s.LaShonda loves fashion design. She lives in a group home with her brother in The Bronx since her parents abandoned them.
‘Sons of the Confederacy’ (which is the name for the group representing the South) is made up of Alvin and all of the other players on their soccer team, with Alvin as their leader. Alvin writes the school newspapers and plays goalie on the Da Vinci soccer team.

In this book, the two main conflicts are between The Sons of the Confederacy and The Cruisers.
The first conflict is when Alvin writes a newspaper article about civilizing black people. He believes that the white people should help the black people to be civilized by teaching them their religion and ways of life. The Cruisers call a meeting with Alvin and the Sons of the Confederacy to say what they believe - that black people don’t need anyone’s help to be civilized. The next day he wrote a newspaper article arguing with The Sons of the Confederacy about civilizing black people.
The last conflict was towards the end of the book, when The Cruisers made signs that all of the black kids in school are going wear to school the next day saying “I Have Been Degraded”. Zander’s plan is that they are going to wear the signs and treat the white kids like their feelings don’t matter because Alvin said that black people’s feelings don’t matter since black people aren’t civilized. Zander is doing this to show the white kids what it feels like when your feelings don’t matter.

This book is the first of the four books of the Cruisers series, and is recommended for kids in grades 6-8. I agree with that but I would study the Civil War before reading this book to understand it better.

An entertaining, intelligent and inspiring novel that grapples with the issues of freedom of speech, racism and broken families
By Teen Reads
Students at the Da Vinci Academy for the Gifted and Talented in Harlem are some of the best and brightest. But while most obsess about grades and achievements, the Cruisers believe life should be laid back and enjoyed. They have even published their own alternative newspaper, The Cruiser, which has generated controversy.

Cruiser leader Alexander (Zander) Scott likes attending Da Vinci because there aren't a lot of fights like in some schools. Zander loves English and would like to write screenplays one day, but he can't seem to get motivated. His grades have dropped, and if they continue to slide, he could be asked to leave the school. Even worse, he might have to move to Oregon to live with his father. Zander's beautiful mom is his biggest supporter, but struggles to make ends meet while she pursues her dream as a model and an actress.

Math whiz and star chess player Barbara (Bobbi) McCall also belongs to the Cruisers. Bobbi gets A's in Algebra, but her grades in other subjects aren't so stellar. Zander's best friend, Kambui Owens, lives with his grandmother while his father is in jail. Kambui's talent is photography, but he also has a knack for not backing down from a fight. Abandoned by her parents and left to live in a group home, LaShonda Powell is bright and creative. LaShonda, who has her own distinctive style, wants to be a fashion designer. Outspoken and opinionated, she has written an article for The Cruiser that has caused the group to be called to the principal's office.

The assistant principal, Mr. Culpepper, wants the Cruisers expelled, but the principal, Mrs. Maxwell, has another idea. As a school project to study the Civil War, the entire class of eighth-grade students has been divided into Union and Confederate sympathizers. To redeem themselves, Mrs. Maxwell has assigned the Cruisers the task of negotiating peace between the two sides before war breaks out.

A guest editorial in the school's official newspaper written by soccer goalie Alvin McCraney creates bad feelings between the two groups. McCraney, who heads the Sons of the Confederacy, encourages the Southern states to break away from the Union. As words heat up and tension mounts, students pick sides and the threat of violence escalates. Are the Cruisers up to the task of negotiating peace, or will the class project prove they are not Da Vinci material?

THE CRUISERS is an entertaining, intelligent and inspiring novel that grapples with the issues of freedom of speech, racism, broken families, drug use and standing up for one's beliefs. Award-winning author Walter Dean Myers has captured the essence and voice of the Cruisers --- a group of vivid and gritty characters who not only survive, but thrive, despite various obstacles in their lives.

But the Book of Immortality is unraveling, and the Adderhead again fears the White Women of Death. To bring the renegade Bluejay back to repair the book, the Adderhead kidnaps all the children in the kingdom, dooming them to slavery in his silver mines unless Mo surrends. From Publishers Weekly
This concluding volume in Funke's bestselling trilogy picks up where Inkspell left off, but sputters for a hundred pages filling in backstory. (Even then, an addendum is needed to identify a cast of 114 characters.) The Inkworld, full of dark magic, is under siege; the savagery of the Adderhead and his minions now extends to taking all the peasants' children until somebody delivers, as ransom, the Bluejay, a Robin Hood–style character whose identity has been assumed by Mo, Meggie's father (it was Mo who started all the trouble by reading several villains right out of the book-within-a-book, Inkheart—don't even consider reading this series out of order). The Inkheart author, Fenoglio, now living in Inkworld himself, has turned to drink; the odious Orpheus, when he's not under a maid's skirt, rewrites Fenoglio's work (editors!) to benefit himself. The interesting metafictional questions—can we alter destiny? shape our own fate?—are overwhelmed by the breakneck action, yet the villains aren't fully realized. More disappointingly, the formerly feisty Meggie, barely into her teens, has little to do but choose between two suitors. Funke seems to have forgotten her original installment was published for children. Ages 9–up. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 5–9—This final volume in the trilogy returns readers to Inkworld and its wide cast of characters. Under the rule of the evil Adderhead, it is a bleak and dangerous place. General gloominess bogs down the pace initially, as several characters agonize, sometimes tiresomely, over past regrets and the dire uncertainty of the future. Meggie, despite her gift of magical reading, remains a disappointingly dull protagonist, but other characters are quite compelling. Her bookbinding father, for instance, emerges as a swashbuckling outlaw, and, when he brings the fire-dancer Dustfinger back from the dead, things get really interesting. The assortment of villains is vivid and frightening, especially Mortola, who can change shape, and the immortal Adderhead. Even more intriguing is Mo, who evolves into a powerful and complex scoundrel as he explores the evil potential of his unique ability to make up stories, then read them into reality. The finale includes a thoroughly engrossing climax as the Adderhead and Mo meet their doom, though a subplot involving Meggie and her companions is less exciting. Despite occasional weaknesses in plotting and characterization, Funke successfully explores ideas of fate, free will, and the power of story in a multilayered tale with many dramatic moments, bringing the series to a satisfying conclusion. Summaries of the first two books and a list of names and places are provided for those new to the series, but this last installment will be appreciated most by readers who start with the first title.—Steven Engelfried, Multnomah County Library, OR

From Booklist
Funke completes the trilogy that began with Inkheart (2003) in this long, eventful novel. Although the scene frequently shifts from one set of characters to another, there is rarely any relief from the sense of encroaching menace that takes many different forms. The unusually large cast is helpfully identified for readers in the appended eight-page, cross-referenced list of characters and places in the trilogy. Though some of the violent scenes are not for the fainthearted, readers who loved the detailed world building and the adventure in the earlier books will probably enjoy this one as well. Still, others will find it less satisfying than its predecessors. From the initial premise of a bookbinder who reads aloud so beautifully that he can draw a story’s characters out of the pages and into his own world, the earlier volumes were booklovers’ books. This one seems more plot driven, or perhaps driven by the necessity of bringing so many intertwined stories to a satisfying conclusion. Grades 8-12. --Carolyn Phelan

Adults have an important role too!
By Michelle Michael
I would like to address the comments that frequently expressed concern about Mo taking a larger role in this book while Meggie takes more of a background role. First of all, why not? Isn't it wonderful that there is an author out there who portrays adults shining in their roles. Our society gets so bombarded with the idea that people can be shining stars when they're young and glamourous but then once you reach middle age, the media gives this impression that you need to somehow recede in the background, step back, and let the younger more glamourous take the scene. In this case, the adults are portrayed with bigger roles than you normally see in most books. Mo is the central character here and isn't it great that so many people were touched by these series even to the end. Some even said that Inkdeath was their favourite book. This makes a strong statement to our society which is that older people also deserve to have a chance to shine. Meggie got to shine in two whole books and so why not let Mo shine in the third one? This doesn't take away from Meggie in any way. Rather this teaches us a lesson in our lives that we should ALL be given opportunities to shine. Regardless of whether we're young or older, we can make a difference in this world in the lives of both children and adults and we can be a part of things. It's NOT all over for us once we pass our school ages! People like Cornelia Funke and George Lucas do such a great service to humanity and their work by portraying people of ALL ages as important central characters in their stories. Yes, young school age people and also glamourous people are given important roles but they aren't the ONLY ones given those roles. When authors like Cornelia Funke and the Star Wars authors constantly hit the bestseller list, this gives a subtle message to our youth worshipping media society that speaks to a longing deep within all of our hearts--the truth that ALL of us can be larger than life, and do beautiful and wonderful things.

Great story!
By Susie W.
In reading other reviews about this trilogy, some people seemed concerned that some characters were not as present as they would have liked in this book. As a reader who really gets attached to a book's characters, I can understand this concern. However, as I read this trilogy, I found that my first impressions of who the significant characters were changed over time as did their importance to the story and new ones introduced. For example, in Inkheart, I just could not put the book down because I had to find out what happens to Dustfinger who had been an unwilling addition to our "real world" and was so desperate to get back home to the "Inkworld". What must that be like!?

Inkspell, to me, was a wonderful bridge between Inkheart and Inkdeath and helps the reader to better appreciate and understand Inkdeath with many important events contained within its pages. Some issues are resolved and some new ones occur. It is quite a page turner as well.

In the end, I have to say that Inkdeath is my favorite book of the trilogy. After reading all three books, I have come to the conclusion that, for me at least, the main character in the series is Mo. It was pure joy to watch this character grow and to learn what kind of man he actually is. There were many fine hints of who he is in the first two books but you really find out in Inkdeath. There are many poignant scenes in this book regarding him. My favorite such scene is when Resa helplessly has to watch Mo ride through the castle gates...alone...in the face of great danger. A reader can greatly feel her extreme pain, fear, and pride, all at the same time, as she watches this man of immense courage, who belongs to her, do what he has to do. (This scene also clearly shows why the "White Women" loved Mo's "heart" as well as his voice so much). Beautifully written!

I highly recommend this trilogy to you. Beware, though! Try not to get caught up in the action and read Inkdeath at too fast a pace. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat; and if you let your eyes fly over the pages too quickly, you will miss some subtle, very important clues which help to make so much more sense of the story in the end that you are left thinking...well, that was clever! I say this because I found myself constantly rereading in an effort to try to catch up with what I missed in my haste to find out what would happen to Mo! And, the ending is quite surprising. (Ugh!!! It was so hard not to read the last few chapters before the story took me there!)

Anyway, if you decide to read this trilogy, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It would probably be a good idea to read all three books and in order so that your reading experience with this story will be so much richer.

Thanks for reading my review.

Inkdeath - creative story with dark overtones
By Christine L
Overall, I enjoyed the story, but I must say that the story was at times darker than I like for a children's novel and was also morally ambiguous. There was murder, gore, infidelity and betrayal and death among the primary characters. There was also a discussion of marriage in girls who were only about 13 years old, and engagement in some girls who were only 6. I also felt that the characters sometimes acted in a way that did not seem in line with the way that they were described by the author. For instance, Meggie, acts in a way that she knows will seriously hurt her father, even though Meggie and her father are portrayed as being very close in the story. On a positive note, the story has very good twists and turns, and is very creative and engrossing. The descriptions of the fantasy world are very colorful and enjoyable. I would not want to share this story with a pre-teen child and I would definately want to talk to my teenager about the way family and romantic relationships were portrayed in the light of my own personal standards. Despite the dark tone, this is still a good read for a teenage and older reader.

Another great Watson Star Wars adventure
By C. L Wright
The first story, Legacy of the Jedi was an awesome story. You started reading and hit the ground running. It gave great new insight into Dooku and the beginings of his fall. The second story, Secrets... was not as exciting, but still interesting. It shows Obi-Wan dealing with some of the same problems Anakin does. It also includes a short story by Watson that is about Obi-Wan set before the Last of the Jedi series and after Revenge of the Sith. Overall this book is awesome and you get two books for the price of one. Star Wars fans young and old will enjoy it. Even though the release date say May I found it a week ago at a book store. The cover is different also. The cover actually has Anakin in the forground with Yoda, Dooku, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in the background.

Jude Watson does it again
By L. Tolis
Jude Watson has the singular ability to tie in the themes of the Star Wars movies into all her SW books. Too bad she doesn't write "adult" novels... she'd best many of today's SW authors.

These two stories tie in the suceeding generations of Jedi quite deftly. The first, Legacy, has strong overtones of the past coming back to haunt you, but gives insight into the Master-Padawan bond and how that bond helps form both Jed. My favorite story was Secrets, however, with the evidence that Anakin's "failing" may have been more than an isolated event. I would love to see Watson develop this story line into a more philosophic adult novel.

*spoiler* While I was sorry to see Siri Tachi die, her storyline was wonderful and you have to be a little happy that she didn't survive to see the Jedi betrayed. I also liked Obi-Wan's musings that if Qui-Gon had survived, he'd have been able to pinpoint the growing problems among the Jedi to a source (giving more evidence to Qui-Gon's uniqueness).

All in all, a great addition to the SW canon, appropriate for any age.

Generations of Jedi
By ultron77
Legacy of the Jedi and Secrets of the Jedi, two stories written by the great Jude Watson that give us more insight to the characters we have seen on the silver screen in George Lucas' legendary film saga.

Legacy begins with the future Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus, now recently accepted as a Padawan learner. In the first chapters, he has a friend, Lorian Nod who has yet to be accepted by a Master. Lorian's jealousy at Dooku's promotion drives the young boy to stealing an ancient Sith holocron from the Jedi Library. Looking at the information strikes fear into Lorian's heart. The events that follow turn their friendship into rivalry and almost quickly into hatred. Dooku turns Lorian in to the Council for the theft and Lorian is dismissed.

The rest of Legacy tells the story of Lorian Nod through the viewpoints of the several generations of Master and apprentice, starting with Dooku all the way down to Anakin Skywalker. In the final segment Dooku and Lorian are on opposing sides again, but this time the allegiance either of them bear is the opposite than what it was in the past. This sets the stage for their final confrontation.

Secrets of the Jedi tells a completely different story that shows that Anakin has not been the only Jedi to fall in love. Beginning after the death of Tahl in Jedi Apprentice #15 and Qui-Gon's subsequent quest for vengeance in #16, the story tells of Obi-Wan falling with fellow Padawan learner Siri Tachi and how they had to force to keep themselves at bay from one another throughout the years.

The final story of this book, The Last One Standing, features Obi-Wan in his first months living in exile on Tatooine watching over Luke Skywalker. As the title states, Obi-Wan really is the last one standing of all the major characters of this book as Dooku, Lorian, Qui-Gon and Siri have been killed previously, and he does not yet know that Anakin survived the flames of Mustafar to become the cyborg everyone in the galaxy would fear as Darth Vader. As such when he has to go on an adventure to ensure Luke's safety, he laments on it throughout his task.

Legacy of the Jedi, Secrets of the Jedi, and The Last One Standing tells a tale throughout the ages of Star Wars to the very end with Obi-Wan as the only one surviving, and as such tells its own saga of generations of Jedi.

"Exciting, thought-provoking, and very hard to put down."--The New York Times Book Review

Mika lives in future London, behind The Wall: Solid concrete topped with high-voltage razor wire and guarded by a battalion of Ghengis Borgs, it was built to keep out the animals, because animals carry the plague.

Or so Mika's been told.

But ever since Ellie vanished a year ago, Mika's suspected his world may be built on secrets--and lies. When a mysterious organization starts recruiting mutant kids to compete in violent virtual reality games, Mika takes the chance to search for his twin sister--and the truth.

"A hugely inventive and entertaining read which grabs the reader by the scruff of the neck from the first sentence. It flies along like a laser beam from a blaster and sustains the breakneck pace until the stunning climax. A fresh and exciting take on sci-fi..."--Eoin Colfer

Add Another Classic to Dystopian Literature
By John Bradley
The Roar by Emma Clayton is a highly enjoyable read. It is in the same vein as the popular YA novels the Hunger Games and Catching Fire. The Roar is set in a dystopic future similar to some of the genre's great, classic predecessors. The Roar shares similarities to two of the greatest books in the genre: Brave New World and 1984. The main antagonist in the book has extended his life to an unnatural length taking pills conjuring Brave New World. Clayton's writing also strongly relates to 1984. Both books contain the themes of being separated by class; those who are ruled are on a frantic journey towards self identification. However Clayton's strongest influence is Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. The books share many similar themes that drive each respective novel towards a breathtaking conclusion.

Before the story begins, Ellie, one of our heroes has been kidnapped and imprisoned. The Roar roars off with Ellie and a Capuchin monkey in tow, barreling towards earth in a Pod Fighter. They cross the wall that extends across the entire northern hemisphere and race towards the United Kingdom at ridiculous speeds. They have escaped the evil Mal Gordon's satellite space station with the goal of seeing Ellie's family. Ellie was kidnapped by Gorman because of his suspicion of her "special" powers. Ellie is chased by goons, but the deadly twelve year old pilot outmaneuvers her tails and flies underneath London into The Shadows. Ellie makes a small mistake and ends up crashing in the Thames which is now a giant, stinking floodplain. She sinks to the bottom with the thought that she is going to be buried alive in the black muck that was once the famous river. To her consternation and relief, Ellie is "rescued" by Gorman and brought back to her prison in space. Clayton's action is brisk, intense, and does not let up through out.

The story switches focuses onto Ellie's twin brother, Mika, who lives in a fold down house (fold down because you fold up your bathroom in order to fold down your kitchen, all in 50 square feet) in a suburb of London. Mika is an extraordinary young boy. Everyone believes that Ellie is dead because that is what her family has been told by the local police. However, Mika has strong feelings (and convincing dreams) that his sister is alive and is willing to do anything in order to get her back.

Mika attends his local school where all of the learning takes place by video. One day in class a new program is started where all of the students are forced to drink health supplements. He feels that the government, who has initiated the "Fit Mix" program, is trying to poison the children. The program also includes physical exercise, as well as a new "game" that teaches the children how to fly a Fighter Pod (think spaceship) that the children are coerced to learn through the excitement of this new "game". This same arm of the government, run by the Evil Mal Gorman, has certain sinister goals that they want to accomplish by running this "Fit Mix" campaign. Gorman initiates all of the children into competing against each other in a massive government supported competition. Mika is sucked into winning the game because he feels that this may be a way to find Ellie.

The plot continues with Mika becoming more and more involved in different stages of these games and through the competition, Mika gets closer and closer to his sister. I won't give more of the plot away as that would be a disservice to anyone wanting to read this one.

One reason the book is so compelling is the descriptions of where these characters live and what their environments are like. The world north of the barrier is very dichotic. The Shadows, which is the remaining cities and towns built before the Fold Down Houses and the Golden Turrets were erected. The Shadows are the bottom of a three tiered city scape. The Shadows is a world that doesn't ever see sunlight, where deadly mold covers all surfaces, and where the refuse from the world above is basically dumped on top of this motley living space. Living in the Shadow's would be the equivalent of living in a dump or a sewer, unpleasant and unsanitary. Above the Shadows is where Mika lives, the Fold Down Houses. This area is where the majority of the lower middleclass lives. It is older and run down, but not necessarily physically dangerous. The houses are ridiculously cramped. This leaves the Golden Turrets, where the rich live. These are spacious apartments that jut out of the sky line. The people living in the Golden Turrets are not wanting. Picture a golden skyscraper with all the amenities included.

Clayton's writing about the different classes from these three separate environments, was one of my favorite pieces of the book. At one point in the story the main characters are in the Golden Turrets and experience an immeasurably eerie occurrence. Here is a quote from the book.

--Boom. Boom.

"What's that?" he asked as his feet hit the pavement. It sounded like the heartbeat of an enormous beast, as if a dragon were sleeping beneath its treasure, instead of on top of it.

Boom. Boom.

"The Shadows," the chauffeur replied. "haven't you heard?"

"No," Mika said. "what's happening?"

"The mold is getting worse," the chauffeur replied grimly. "And hundreds are dying every day. And they say the government won't help them because it's cheaper to let them die."

...

"But the people in The Shadows won't be ignored," the chauffeur said. "So they're banging on the pillars holding up the Golden Turrets with huge steel balls on chains. All day and all night they swing them - one time for every person who's died. It was driving people crazy up here when it started on Friday night, but apparently you get used to it."

Boom. Boom.

"I don't think I'll get used to it," Mika said. He gazed at the pavement and tried to imagine what was below, all that darkness and water and millions of people trying to stay alive and balls on chains swinging against the pillars.

"Creepy, innit?" the chauffeur said.

Sure is. Thanks for such an awesome description Ms. Clayton.

Like Ender's Game, The Roar features a government agency training children through games. Ender was forced in a certain direction through games and, in the end of the book, was made to command an army in order to defeat his enemies, the buggers. Mika on the other hand is coerced into learning to fly by the governments offer of instantly improving his families lives. Ender is, in essence, tricked, where Mika has consciously made the choice to participate because he believes he may be able to rescue his sister.

Another strong comparison between the two works is the dream sequences. Ender keeps dreaming about the game that he is playing, in particular about the decomposing giant. These dream sequences are driving pieces in the book. Mika is also troubled by nightmares. He dreams about these incredibly ancient, living skeletons with old fashioned televisions for heads. Disturbingly, Mika dreams about Mal Gorman as one of these "Tele-heads" before he has even met him. In Mika's dream, all of the Tele-heads surround him in order to eat him. Mal starts with a pair of giant scissors at his big toe as the first course.

There are several other themes that Ender's Game and The Roar share. These themes include older enemies that both treat the protagonist horribly, but the hero gets even with these awful enemies in both books. Both characters are also manipulated by their respective governments. In this regard Mika takes control of the manipulation, where Ender only has a limited control over his destiny throughout the book.

Clayon's writing is vivid and her themes are compelling. She takes up warring social classes, the environment, and psychic powers with deft skill. The book is never preachy and never assumes that her target audience isn't smart enough for the morally challenging aspects of the narrative. Clayton is awesome at taking these serious, modern ideas and making them accessible for the kids (and adults) that take The Roar on.

Everything about The Roar is top notch. The plot, characters, themes, and environment of the book are right up there with the Suzanne Collins Hunger Games series and the classic dystopic novels that we all love. This one comes highly recommended. I hope that more people get their hands on this absolute gem.

Please Put on Kindle as Bind-Up with "The Whisper"!
By M. Lee
As a mother who screens everything her 12-going-on-13-year-old daughter reads, I was getting a tad tired of the post-apocalyptic fables that followed the success of "The Hunger Games." Then, I came across "The Roar." Actually, I stumbled upon its sequel "The Whisper" first - and passed it by, based on the jacket description. When said daughter insisted on borrowing it from the library, I dragged my feet reading it - but by the second page of "The Whisper", I was hooked. I stopped reading "The Whisper", went back to the library and snatched up "The Roar."

I saw "The Roar" as a hybrid between "The Mysterious Benedict Society", "The Hunger Games", "X-Men" (was that a book, ever?!) and the 1970s show "Fantasy Island." Clayton's writing was vivid and to-the-point; the characters were well-fleshed out; the plot was pretty seamless. I would put this series and the "Dark Life" series (previously reviewed) as next up for film adaptation if the thirst for futuristic movies continues. WHY IS IT NOT ON KINDLE?! Yep, sometimes said daughter does know better! Her review follows:

"The book, `The Roar', by Emma Clayton, is an adventurous, thrilling book about what happens when everything you know about the world is wrong. The book is set in the future, where everyone is scared of animals because animals have the Plague. Therefore, everyone lives in crowded apartments on one side of the Wall, and on the other side of the Wall is barren desert, where the animals used to live.

"Mika knows that his twin sister, Ellie, is still alive - even though the police say that she died over a year ago. But when Mika enters a Pod Fighter competition, for a chance to win a new apartment for his parents, a new companion and a Pod Fighter, he soon learns that in order to get Ellie back, winning has to be his top priority.

"My favorite character was definitely Leo. Even though he wasn't really a main character, I liked how he was confident, nice and smart, even if he was often teased because he has a tail. I also liked Helen, who I think was really nice and smart as well. I also liked how she believed Mika when he said Ellie was still alive, even when no one else did. I kinda pictured her looking like a mix between a really cool aunt, and a really nice grandmother.

"I would give the book five stars: two stars for the plot, two stars for the characters; and one star because it has a sequel, which was also really, really good." :-)

Great Setup, Bad Resolution
By Astro 599
I have to say that I liked this book, right up until the last page. It ended on such a strange, abrupt note that I was shocked when I turned the page and there was nothing there. I don't know if there's going to be a sequel, but this ending seemed more like a cliffhanger than an ending. If it is a cliffhanger, it's a good one.

If it's not, then IMO Clayton wimped out on writing the most important part of the story. Finding out a secret is only part of the solution.

Hopefully there will be a sequel, because this book would be much better as part of a series rather than a stand alone.

Another excellent book from the Dear Canada series.
By Rebecca Herman
Young Flora Rutherford grew up in an orphanage in late 19th century Canada, where she and the other children spent their days dreaming up imaginary lives where they had families and homes. So Flora is thrilled when she learns she is to leave the orphanage now that her aunt and uncle have found jobs and a place to live in the mill town of Almonte, Ontario, and can finally provide a home for Flora.

Flora loves her aunt and uncle, who are very kind to her. And she is thrilled to have a family of her own after so many years living in the orphanage. But there is also hardship, as she must become a child laborer at the mill her aunt and uncle work at, rather than go to school and play with her friends as a child should. Flora describes everything that happens to her in a diary written to her parents who died when she was young.

Days of Toil and Tears is an excellent book from the Dear Canada series (a Canadian version of the Dear America series) that shows the hardships of life for poor children in the 1800s, who often had to give up their childhood and work grueling jobs so their families could surive. This is a good book to give to a preteen who enjoys historical fiction, and although I am much older than the target audience, I did really enjoy this book as I love historical fiction written in diary format - the Dear America series was my favorite series as a preteen and young teen and I was so sad when they stopped publishing them, so I was thrilled to find the Dear Canada series.

Daily Life of a Child Mill Worker
By Nicola Mansfield
This is a decent enough story, entertaining and a quick read. It's a simple tale of the daily life of an orphan girl who goes to live with her aunt and uncle, both workers at a textile mill where she also takes a job to support her addition to the family. I didn't find this book nearly as historically interesting as many of the others in this series as it didn't really live up to the subject suggested in the title: "toil", "tears" and "child labour". The picture on the cover looks like a street urchin or a waif, but our main character is certainly not as such, but rather a robust, healthy (though poor) girl living with family who loves her and sees she's taken care of to the best of their ability. The Victorian era is a particular interest of mine and I've read much Dickens, many contemporary Victorian novels, historical fiction and non-fiction on the subject of child labour in the UK and US and it is entirely more of a hardship than this book dares to detail. Rather than speaking of her toils, Flora, describes daily life and spends much more time regaling us with tobogganing, Dominion Day, Victoria's Golden Jubilee, going to church, fairs, festivals and Christmas. I'm not knocking the book, which was entertaining, but the reader is not going to get much insight into the real life of child labourers, Flora is 11 and there is a little girl much younger than her at work also. I usually love the back matter in these books and the author does give more of a real history of child labour and the laws in Ontario at the time (which existed but were largely ignored). However all the photos of actual child labourers were American, and from Southern US at that. Not exactly representative of small town Ontario, which was disappointing. Not a bad slice-of-life historical fiction of a labouring family from the time period but not exactly a portrait of victorian era child labour.
