Good but wanted more

Book one The Clone Codes, was an incredible story set in the future with a new kind of underground railroad for clones and cyborgs. It was amazing, and I could not wait for this one to come out. I was disappointed when I received my advanced copy. It seemed so thin. With only 107 pages of text from preface to end of text, and 144 pages with the endnotes, I was not expecting much. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Set in a future when clones are basically slave labor, and cyborgs, humans who have replaced 3/5th of their parts with synthetics and have lost most of their rights also, are implanted with chips and tracked.

The Cyborg Act of 2130
For the security and general welfare of the cyborg race, these protections have been established on this the 7th day of October, 2130.

The Cyborg Codes

All cyborgs must be registered with the Bureau of Cyborg Affairs (BCA).
Those that are cyborgs must live within designated areas set aside on the Moon Colony. If a cyborg desires to live or work elsewhere, it must acquire BCA permission.
It is mandated that cyborgs may not serve as officers in the World Federation of Nations' defence forces or serve in any national law enforcement agencies.
Cyborg children must attend one of four cyborg academies based on test scores and abilities.
All cyborgs over the age of 16 must be employed.
Cyborgs need permission from the BCA to marry or have children.
The BCA will provide cyborgs with medical insurance and health-care needs.
Cyborgs cannot inherit real property.
Cyborgs can only participate in amateur or professional sports within the Cyborg Leagues."
This story continues almost immediately after book 1 finishes. Leanna, a clone raised as a normal child, Carlos, a boy genius, RUBy, a super and Houston Ye a young cyborg, are still in the thick of it. The new Chancellor of the WFN, Taylor Graham, has passed the Wholer Act, declaring any human with as many as 1 synthetic part is now considered a Cyborg and subject to the Cyborg Act.

The Aliens called the O. have appeared to Taylor Graham and told him they will prevent humans from exploring beyond the solar system as we are not prepared. Leanna must gather the different groups in the Liberty Bell movement, and the Cyborgs, and fashion a cohesive movement to resist this new law. But things are not as they appear, and some friends might not actually be allies.

The story is just really getting interesting when it ends, and we must wait another year for book three to conclude the trilogy. This is a great second instalment in a series, but with the size, I would have preferred one large novel, or even combine books 2 and 3 if they are only going to be a novelette of about 100 pages.

After I read THE CLONE CODES, I was hoping that the authors would follow up with a story about Houston, the Cyborg that helped Leanna escape. Thankfully, CYBORG is his story.

Huey wasn't always a Cyborg. When he was 7, he was in a boating accident. When he awakens in a clinic, he has a different eye, arm, leg, and artificial heart. According to the World Federation of Nations, a Cyborg is anyone having three or more synthetic body replacements. So, with Houston's four new parts, he is officially a Cyborg and, thus, subject to the Cyborg Act.

Houston, Leanna, and their small band of rebels have landed at Shackelton City on the Moon. The City is run (unofficially) by Rizin, another Cyborg. Rizin was a war hero and friends with those after Leanna. But when he became a Cyborg, he became nothing in Taylor and Spiller's eyes. Rizin helps the group in many ways.

As the unrest grows, Leanna wants to turn herself in. She is the key that the rebellion has kept secret - a true clone that grew up not knowing she was a clone. Houston will do what he can to protect her. Houston encounters a long-lost family member that he never expected to see again. More surprisingly, the family member may just help them out. In the end, the story is left hanging, yet again. The group is still out there fighting for justice.

Don't let the short length of this novel stop you. It packs a powerful punch. Houston has replacement parts. With technology today, it's not hard to imagine such things. CYBORG makes the reader stop and think about the power government has and what happens when society goes along with everything. CYBORG is reminiscent of Robin Wasserman's WIRED and Mary Pearson's THE ADORATION OF JENNA FOX. What makes us human? Read CYBORG and then think about it.

A remakable little book - I thoroughly enjoyed

Cyborg is set on Earth and on the Moon in the future of 2170. Written in first person, this is a heart felt, sci -fi adventure of a human boy, Houston Yi.

Houston has a tragic boating accident when he's seven years old. His life is saved by modern medicine with a transplant of a biofe eyes, arm, leg and an artificial heart to replace his which no longer functioned. Houston lives in a world where anyone who has three cyborg body parts or more is classified as a cyborg rather than human. His life changes drastically due to his new non-human cyborg status. The cyborgs are prejudiced against and many laws deny them justice, equality and respect . Similar to the Jim Crow laws of the old south prior to the victories of the civil rights movement. One of his friends is a clone, and in this world the cones are slaves with no rights at all.

This is one of those books that brings the quote by Nathaniel Hawthorne to mind -"Easy reading is damn hard writing." The writing is smooth and flows and is at a level most middle readers would easily be able to read not just young adult but at the same time adults will love it as well. It is also equally suitable for males and female readers. It's a remarkable little book that I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

"Reduced Shakespeare Company" Does History

I came across Terry Deary completely by accident ~ in a gift shop in Scotland, shoved amongst other more "scholarly" hardcovers. As my graduate area of study is the Middle Ages, I was intrigued and bought the book on a whim ~ and haven't stopped buying Terry Deary's books since! Are the books chock-full of historical facts guaranteed to allow someone to walk away thinking they know everything about the Middle Ages, Greece, Rome, France, or any of Deary's other topics? No, of course not. Are the books a wonderfully entertaining (and illustrated!) way of addressing what can admittedly be a bit of a dry topic? Of course! I say any books that can make someone, young or old, become interested in history should be embraced fully. And, hey, I learn something new from every book I read, which is an added bonus! Further, I think these books definitely appeal to adults who have an interest or education in history ~ much as what "The Reduced Shakespeare Company" teaches us about Shakepeare is true about Deary's treatment of history: the better you know the original, the more funny and entertaining the condensed versions are.

These books got me hooked on History

I am really in the debt of Terry Deary. If it weren't for him and his wonderful "Horrible History" series, I would never have been introduced to history. I first read his work when I was only ten. Seven years later, I'm still enjoying his work. Yes, childish, but it is so much fun. I now want to teach, to make history fun to others. I wouldn't have known it possible if it weren't for Deary. Right next to my "Measly Middle Ages" and my "Woeful Second World War" is my John Keegen and William Manchester.
Onto "Measly Middle Ages". I really enjoy this book. Both irreverent and insightful at the same time, this book really shows the reader how horrible the middle ages actually were. I've read several works on the era, and this book nicely fills in the basic details, with out bogging it down with the details that us history dorks love. A great book for kids, a great book for people who both enjoy history and enjoy having fun.

Cute but not astute

This book would not do for a young person who actually wants to learn some history, as the history aspect is done just a little too "lite". Here's a paragraph describing the Norman Conquest: "Bill the Conqueror was Norman leader in 1066. He said King Edward of England had promised him the English throne --King Harold said the same thing." [You see the problem there with the indefinite antecedent.] "It was a fight to the death for two tough fellers. The English must have hoped Harold would win because Big Bill was bloodthirsty..." The above is actually okay for the British teenagers for whom it was originally written, but a young American audience would be unlikely to deduce the basic facts of the Norman Conquest from the author's account. It is, however, funny, likely to hook a reluctant reader, and seems to have been enjoyed by the young people who reviewed it here.

Not at all what I thought

I thought this book would be an academic or scholarly examination of men's sexual lives, with some detail into why they are often so different from women's sexual lives.
It is not.
It is, by and large, just a collection of "Letters to Penthouse magazine" covering mostly the more prurient aspects of sexual fantasy.
Not at all what I thought, and not at all recommended for anything other than pure sexual enticement to the very nontraditional view.

Author Jordan Sonnenblick has done it again. ZEN AND THE ART OF FAKING IT gets the up and downs and total frustration of being a teen just right.

San Lee's life has been full of new towns and new schools, but this one upsets him more than all of the others combined. This time, instead of having his dad uproot the family in search of his latest scheme, it is just San and his mother because his dad is in prison.

Not particularly successful at anything in the past, San has frequently used negative behavior to get attention. Being Oriental and adopted by a white couple has not always made things easy. Now with his father serving time for his shady business dealings, San finds himself feeling the need to get things right this time.

Faced with not only a new school and trying to fit in, but also with Wednesday night phone calls from a convict father he never wants to talk to again, San is ready to try just about anything. With his mother working long hours to make ends meet, he decides he needs a gimmick to win some friends and positively influence some people. Thanks to his new social studies teacher, the door to Zen Buddhism opens wide.

San's well-worn clothes and tattered sandals become a great disguise as he steps into his role as the Zen expert of the eighth grade. With help from the local library, the perfect "meditation" rock right outside school, and his new friend, Woody, San fools everyone into believing his Buddhist philosophy. Although he seems to be fitting in and gaining popularity, he worries that faking it may make him like the father he has learned to detest.

Sonnenblick uses his humorous, straight-forward style to grab readers on page one, and whisk them into San's world. There are crazy antics, a touch of romance, family frustrations, and quite a bit of Buddhist information packed into this fast-paced read. this book rocks

You know how some people are just naturally hilarious? Jordan Sonnenblick is one of those people. ZEN is an awesome book, containing most excellent dialogue and a plot that will keep you up very late, reading until your eyes hurt to find out what happens next.

This is the story of San Lee, new kid, who's trying to fit in by...well, not exactly being himself. We love San right from the start. Like the rest of us, he has baggage to deal with and family issues and someone special in his life he's trying to impress, and we're sympathetic to his struggles. You'll love how San changes as his confidence grows. And the Zen bits are really fun.

Read it. Love it. Pass it on.

Zen and the Art of Reading a Good Book!

Jordan Sonnenblick did a wonderful job of representing a teenager's state of mind in his book, Zen and the Art of Faking It. This humorous fiction book shows how teens cope with events happening at school and home. An eighth grader named San has done a lot of moving around in his life due to his father's lack of telling the truth and ending up in jail. When San and his mom moved to Pennsylvania, San sees this as an opportunity to start his life over again. On the first day of school, he saw a girl singing in the cafeteria at lunch; it was love at first sight. He suddenly had a mad crush on that girl, named Woody. Right away he started adjusting himself to her likings and ended up becoming a fake "Zen" artist. San and Woody have many secrets between them that they are scared to admit, but with a little help of Buddhism, they just might be able to work out their problems.

San is a teenage boy who is afraid to tell the truth, but doesn't want to hurt people in the process of lying. He is compassionate and just wants to impress Woody without hurting his reputation while doing so. I really enjoyed San's character because I think he shows the average middle school student, and the changes and problems they are faced with. I also believe he is very mature and can handle situations in positive ways, even though he still has a long way to go. Woody is a singer, guitar player, basketball star, and volunteer who might intimidate San a little, but really she is just trying to get over her hardships at home with her family and find a best friend who will just listen to her.

This hilarious book is perfect for middle school students to read, and it will even help you understand your teenage love life a little bit better! This book was so much fun to read, and I never wanted to put it down because it has so much suspense and characters you are secretly cheering for to come up on top. I highly recommend it to all teens who love fiction, and even those who don't!

Exile

The lead up to the last book in the series, it portrays the constant fight between good and evil. Evil that is not evident, but that somehow sneaks into our lives, little by little, lie by lie and often from many different sources. It would be a great book to read with your children as you discuss the many different aspects of choices that lead to consequences, good or bad.

One of my favorites!

I love the whole series, I liked the first few books most, but this one is still a super fun read. Lots of adventure and all. I read them originally when I was 11 or so... I decided to reread them now that I'm 17 and I still love them! Slightly more violent than your typical kids book about animals, but you'd have to be pretty darn sensitive to be turned off by it. Very good! I definitely reccomend it! :)

The mysterious Striga whom I formerly loved becomes a psycho maniac. It's evident that he is a hagsfiend (he seems to have the fyngrot gaze, as I call it) and in the end, has the same tyrannical plans as Nyra and Kludd.

His purge for vanity is most disturbing as by flattery, lie by lie, book by book, fire by fire, he gains control of the King and burns owls!

Read it! You have to! It's a fantastic book! ;)

Vince Luca is just like any other high school guy. His best friend, Alex, is trying to score vicariously through him; his brother is a giant pain; and his father keeps bugging him to get motivated. Vince Luca, 17, has a problem. His wealthy family runs the, uh, vending machine business in New York, and Vince is determined not to be part of it. Especially after a hot date is ruined when he finds that his older brother Tommy has conducted some business with Jimmy the Rat and hidden the messy and temporarily unconscious body in the trunk of Vince's car. His dad, the King of the Mob, is reasonable, sensible, lots of fun, gives great presents to his kids--and his name strikes the hearts of other mobsters to stone.

Although Vince keeps a low profile at school, his family connection brings him unwanted advantages, like the birthday Porsche that gets him arrested on stolen vehicle charges, or the football game in which he makes touchdown after touchdown because word has gotten around and nobody is willing to tackle him. Even private conversations at home have to be carried on in the basement because the FBI has bugged the house and an agent is always listening. Vince's life is inextricably tangled up with the family business, no matter how hard he tries to stay out of it. How can he show them he's serious? Then he meets Kendra, and when she innocently reveals that her father's an FBI agent--that FBI agent--it's a match made in heaven. He thinks.

The Sopranos (minus the vulgarity and violence) meets Leave It to Beaver (minus the "aw-shucks" tone and dated sensibility) in Korman's (No More Dead Dogs) brassy, comical caper. With its razor-sharp dialogue and bullet-fast pace, this tale could fly on either the small or big screen, yet it makes a page-turner of a novel. Korman shapes a believable and likable crew-despite the less than reputable profession of some. Many of the novel's conflicts revolve around the fact that the affable narrator, 17-year-old Vince Luca, refuses to become involved in the family "vending machine business." But of course, since his father is the Mob boss, and his older brother serves as their father's loser lackey, Vince cannot avoid being tainted (e.g., he lands in jail "because my sixteenth-birthday present [a Porsche] turns out to be hot"). Mom turns a deaf ear to the shady goings-on, cooking up a steady storm in the kitchen and willing "to serve a sit-down dinner for fifteen guys at four in the morning with ten minutes advance notice." Things heat up when Vince begins dating-and eventually falls in love with-the daughter of the FBI agent determined to bring down Vince's father. The boy also gets sucked into the maelstrom when he loans money to one of his father's underlings for whom he feels sorry. Funny and unexpectedly affecting, this will grab-and hold onto-even the most reluctant of readers. Ages 12-up.

Grade 7-9-Actor Max Casella effectively becomes Vince Luca, son of the leading New York mob boss, reading Gordon Korman's novel (Hyperion, 2002) which presents difficult situations and choices in a very humorous way. Despite his resolve to be a "normal" teenager and to stay out of his father's criminal activities, Vince finds himself seemingly drawn as a loan shark on a deal and must find a way to get out. Complicating the situation is the fact that he has started dating the daughter of the FBI agent investigating his father's activities. Casella's nasal, slight New York accent is perfect for this selection and draws listeners into the story told in first person. Reading at a fast clip, there is never a dull moment. Casella uses pauses and emphasis to accentuate the teenage slang. Although Vince's emotions are presented in a somewhat exaggerated manner, younger teens will enjoy the excitement and humor of the story. Casella does whatever is necessary-shouting, breaking into song, etc.-to make the narration very realistic. A great choice to motivate adolescent boys.

Worth every penny!

Vince is a typical 17-year-old in an atypical situation, where breaking the law is normal, while following the law when doing something for someone shows you "really care" about them. The way Korman depicts The Life from a frustrated teenager's eyes is witty and hilarious and kept me turning the pages, even when I could already predict who was putting up the "Kendra and Vince for Homecoming king and queen" signs and why the Meow Marketplace was filling up with odd advertisements for cats. The ending is happy, but in the long run, I kind of doubt Vince and Kendra can pull it off. An FBI agent may not do anything about his daughter seeing a mob prince, but a mob king will very likely do something efficient about his son seeing an agent's daughter. Also, as Vince had mentioned, if Kendra's dad puts Vince's family in jail, how will he feel toward Kendra? But, there's the sign of a really good book, that it kept me thinking about it long after I'd read it. Worth every penny!

Great!!! awsome read!

I just finished reading this book, and all though the writing is a little bit ackward in some areas, the story line is fantastic. Vince's family is in the "vending maching" buisness, but Vince wants no part of "the Life". Instead he makes an honest attempt to stay sane and in good terms with the law. This all changes when he meet's his new girlfriend who's father is an FBI agent, who just happens to be bugging their house!! Vince has to find out some way to hide this from his parents, and never let her dad find out he's the son of "Honest Abe Luca"

Highly Entertaining Read

Son of the Mob is a highly entertaining novel. The book is fun from the very beginning. Vince is in the precarious position of being the son of a mob boss who wants nothing to do with the "family business".
The ways in which the "family business" keeps finding its way into Vince's life makes this book fun and unpredictable.
The strongest part of this novel is that Gordon Korman is able to take a very common plot line (The mob family) and make it into something very unique and interesting. His modernization of Romeo and Juliet is the best such depiction in a very long time.
Once you have read the book, buy the audio book too. Max Casella from Doogie Howser reads the book in his very appropriate New Jersey accent, and the entertainment level just rises.
What a great accomplishment by Gordon Korman! This book should be used as a companion for Romeo and Juliet in classrooms all across the nation. If not, Young Adults readers and reluctant readers can definitely get through this page-turning gem of a novel.
