Wonderful engaging books to read or for young readers!

This book and the other Jewel Fairy books were recommended by a friend who is also a reading specialist in our local elementary school. We gave four of them to my 4-year old daughter and she loves them. I read to her and have her point to the words she can read on her own. My 8-year old comes in and sits next to us and reads over our shoulder even though it's fairly easy reading. Now the 10-yr old comes in and listens even though she's a highly advanced reader so obviously the stories are engaging to many ages. My goal is to have the older ones start reading to their sister so they advance their own skills and also spend time together. Great books - they are pretty too and have stickers.

This is right on for a good second grade reader. They are able to read it on their own and upgrade vocabulary as they go along. This kept my daughters attention and now she is into the complete series. I will take a book over more video any day.

In this fourth volume of the graphic-novel adaptations of Ann M. Martin’s Baby-Sitters Club books, Claudia and her older sister, Janine, must deal with the changes in their grandmother, Mimi, after she suffers a severe stroke. Creative Claudia doesn’t get good grades in school the way her sister does, and she feels that her family values studious Janine more. However, Claudia doesn’t notice that Janine isn’t too happy when she keeps volunteering to do everything to help Mimi after their grandmother comes home from the hospital to recuperate and relearn how to speak. Meanwhile, the Baby-Sitters Club’s new summer playgroup takes up lots of Claudia’s spare time, and she tries to help her regular club charge, who feels jealous about all the attention his baby sister gets. Telgemeier’s expressive black-and-white art plays a key role in the story here, as much of the interplay between Claudia and Janine is unspoken but clearly shown in their expressions and body language. A section at the end describes how Telgemeier approaches adapting the novels into a graphic format. Grades 3-5. --Kat Kan

Love this book!

I first started reading this book about a week or so after it came out. It started out a little boring but as I got more into the story it became more interesting . I would love to see Raina Telgemier create novels for more babysitters club books . I have read every book Raina Telgemier has made (other than her new book coming out in September; Ghosts) and this is one of the best books she has wrote! Great job!

Janine and Claudia act just like me and my sister. They always fight with each other,but they both love each other. This book reminds me of how I would fight with my sister so much that everyday would be full of yelling or crying or injuries. But we both know that we both love each other more than anything in the world. Janine and Claudia know that too. I really LOVED this book.

A sweet introduction to chapter books

The book description says this book is for 9- to 12-year-olds, but the story and difficulty seem about right for a 7- or 8-year-old. A girl in 7th grade is way above it.

That said, for younger kids this story of good friends Rachel and Kirsty and their adventures in Fairyland is sweet and enjoyable. The `tweens help Holly the Christmas Fairy recover Santa's sleigh and reindeer, which have been stolen by the greedy Jack Frost and his goblin henchmen. The girls travel to the mall to confront the villain, who is impersonating Santa, and then to Jack's ice castle home. It all ends happily ever after, with a ride with Santa in his sleigh and presents all around.

Every page is illustrated with expressive line drawings.

This title, and the whole Rainbow Magic Fairy series, would make a nice introduction to chapter books for fairy-loving girls.

We love this whole series!

My 6 year old daughter got started on the Rainbow Magic Fairy books about a year ago and has been obsessed every since. These books are perfect for readers that are ready for chapter books. If you are new to these books, you should also check out the Rainbow Faires and the Weather Faires - they are my daughter's favorites!

A good deal for a hard to find book set.

This A-Z Mysteries boxed set was exactly as advertised. The new books were sealed and arrived in three or four shipping days. The price was similar to the cost of the individual books at a bookstore. There are not many box sets for A-Z Mysteries available through online dealers so it was great to be able to get these books.

I did not get what I ordered

There were supposed to be 10 books in this set. I received 6 of the A-Z Mysteries and one random book that did not belong to the A-Z mysteries at all. I am disappointed and so was my daughter. The books received were NOT worth the money I paid.

We bought this for the pictures, but it's the stories that blow me away. Here are 21 classic fairy tales that you've never heard before. They're quite strange really, strange and wonderful. An unexpected treasure trove.

They're a bit long for bedtime, but we don't care.

This collection of several truly great Swedish tales is illuminated by John Bauer's dark ink. Bauer paints a world of magic and detail making this a masterpiece beautiful to behold. You'll recognize some of the images as familiar, and some will haunt you with delight. The illustrations grace the pages; the stories grace the imagination.

Great for kids of all ages

John Bauer's illustrations are splendid, with rich detail reminiscent of early Renaissance art. Olenius' prose is at once magical and informal. My daughter's third grade class fell in love with the book after a reading of just one of these tales. Most American children are not exposed to the tales of other cultures, and these stories of trolls and princesses, brave little boys, green-haired witches, magical plants and talking animals.

The Third best in the series

This book, according to my seven year old daughter Charlotte,has a good plot and is fun to read.
Happy the pony, the hero of the Big Apple Barn series, gets a new friend named Sassafrass Surprise. Sassy's first day is marred by an accident when an inexperienced rider kicks her, she goes too fast and the rider says shes hates the pony. Sassy, upset, runs away into the woods.
Happy follows- adventures ensue

just when happy go lucky is starting to feel at home at big apple barn everything changes. there is a new pony in the barn. sassafras surprise otherwise known as sassy. everyone wants to learn more about her. suddleny happys friends are not around as much. they're spending time with sassy instead! even worse sassy doesn't seem intersted in being friends with happy at all. what's a pony have to do?

Father and daughter mice beautifully illustrate the special bond between parent and child in Emmett's latest. Littletail and Longtail spend the day in the forest playing games: chase, hide-and-seek and follow the leader. Although Littletail is good at these games, Longtail is always better. But Longtail reassures her that he won't always be better–someday she will be faster, cleverer and just as big as he is. But one thing will always be the same, no matter what: “I love you always and forever.” This is one of those standouts where text and illustrations are in perfect unison. Howarth's huge mice take center-stage, giving readers a mouse's perspective and highlighting his masterful portrayal of facial expressions. He achieves the ideal balance between cuteness and realistic detail. Like others in this style, this has the potential to begin a loving tradition in any young family. (Picture book. 2-8)

About the Author
“I was born in Leicestershire in 1965, the son of a rig fitter and a primary school teacher. I was fascinated with books from an early age. As a small boy, I reorganised the spare bedroom of our house into a library for my parents' books. This might sound like a helpful thing for a child to do, but instead of ordering the books by subject or author, they were organised by size and colour, which made more sense to me at the time.
I can remember visiting our local library as a toddler. The picture books that we borrowed then, including "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak, "The Cat in the Hat" by Dr. Seuss and "Harold and the Purple Crayon" by Crockett Johnson have had a great influence on the picture books that I now write. The first children's novel that I read on my own was "The Folk of the Faraway Tree" by Enid Blyton. I went on to read other popular children's authors like C. S. Lewis, but like many children of my generation, the author who made the biggest impression on my early childhood was Roald Dahl.

It wasn't until I was about fourteen years old that it occurred to me that I might write for a living. I tried to make the covers of my school rough books look like the covers of novels. I produced a whole "Ruf Notes" trilogy as well as "A Complete Guide to Ruf Notes" each with its own reviews and biographical details on the inside covers and publisher's blurb on the back. Of course, there was nothing inside the books -except the rough notes that I took during lessons!
In 1984 I came to Nottingham to study architecture. It was while I was at college that I first started developing my skills as a writer and illustrator. I was in a band for a short time - it was a pretty crummy band. We never even played a gig, we just fooled around pretending to rehearse. But, because I was the only one that couldn't play an instrument, I had to sing (I am using the word 'sing' very loosely here) and this meant that I also had to write lyrics. I enjoyed this and kept on writing lyrics and poems long after the band had become no more than an embarrassing memory. Then, one day, I decided to try to do an illustration to accompany the lyrics to one of the songs. I was pleased with the result, so I illustrated some of my poems, spending more and more time on each picture. Click here to see some of these early illustrations!

As an architect, I worked on a wide variety of projects including an art gallery, a theatre and an airport check-in building. However, I was never very happy in the job and was always saying that I didn't want to be doing it in ten years time. My wife, Rachel, was always telling me - selflessly - that she would support me if I wanted to give up architecture in order to pursue a career as a writer / illustrator. But it was not an easy decision to make – I was afraid that I might give up a steady job only to find that I couldn't get anything published. However I eventually made the switch in 1995, a few months before my thirtieth birthday.

Fortunately, three months after leaving architecture I signed up with a good literary agent and a couple of months after that I sold my first pop-up book "Scraposaurus Wrecks". Unfortunately, although I completed the book, it was never published. This was a big disappointment, but the fact that I had sold the story, and been commissioned to illustrate and paper-engineer it, gave me the confidence to continue working on children's books and I subsequently succeeded in getting into print.

I am now a full time author / paper-engineer with a growing number of books in print and I really love my new job. I just wish I'd had the courage to start doing it earlier!

A PERFECT BOOK

MY FOUR YEAR OLD AND I LOVE THIS BOOK! IN MY OPINION, I'M FINALLY HAPPY TO HAVE FOUND A BOOK WHERE I DIDN'T HAVE TO PARAPHRASE TO MAKE THE STORY UNDERSTANDABLE AND ON TOP OF THAT, MY CHILD LAUGHED AND LOVED THE INCREDIBLE ARTWORK. WHAT MAKES THIS BOOK SO WONDERFUL IS IT'S A DAD AND DAUGHTER STORY BUT CAN EASILY BE CHANGED TO BE A MOM AND DAUGHTER STORY TOO - OR FOR ANYONE WHO LOVES AND CARES FOR A LITTLE ONE WHO LOVES TO PLAY A QUICK GAME OF HIDE SEEK, CHASE, ETC. THEN FEEL SAFE AND SECURE 'IN THE NEST' AT THE END OF THE DAY. WE RENTED IT FROM THE LIBRARY BUT I'LL BE BUYING IT NOW.

I Love You Always And Forever

This is one of the best children's books I have ever read! I read it to my grandchild at least once a week. She now understands that no matter what else in our lives changes,that our love for each other will always be there. That is a most important thing for children to know in this uncertain world. I love this book and reccommend it to anyone who loves a child.

This book i have purchased for my grand daughter who is 6. She has read the book somany times and loves it so much that she kept in a seperate place called i love you books. It is very nice and i recommend for every child to be read at least once and they demand it to be owned

A great introduction to things Egyptian!

I bought this book for my son who is an avid reader of anything Egyptian and he devoured it happily. He found the interesting facts hard to resist and shared them with all of us. As a professional historian, I usually eschew things like this but I found it engaging when I read it. This is the type of book that homeshcooling parents love because it encourages a reluctant reader to learn and it cements the learning of one who is motivated. I highly recommend it.

Awesome Egyptians - Awesome Book!

The Awesome Egyptians tells you about the people who lived an awesome two thousand years before the Greeks and Romans! It tells you fearful facts about the mighty Mummys' experiences. Did you know that King Pepy II ruled from age 9 to age over 100 - longer than any other Egyptian king? Did you know that King Sneferu invited twenty of his wives to row along the palace lake and entertain him? It was going well when one wife dropped her hair clip in the water. She sulked and refused to go on. The King pleaded. She refused. Finally King Sneferu had to order the court magician to find it. An ancient story says that he folded one half of the lake on top of the other, and found the hair clip.

Awesome story, huh? Anyway, I give this book an awesome FIVE star rating - that's as high as I can get! I recommend you buy this book.

She has left the world with a huge body of great work. Unfortunately, she paid a price. Her children rarely saw her and none of her marriages worked. Nearly everything she did was successful. She was a prolific writer and we are shown many of the communications she had with people during her life.

History Has just repeated itself.....

I read this book when I was in high school...I remember back then my teacher telling us that the Kennedy family wanted this book out of print for fear that John John would be upset by the idea that a clone was killed before his time and with John John being the closest thing to a JFK clone that he would be killed b4 his time also...I have been waiting for someone to say this on tv and to make some kind of analogy to this book....yet no one has....This book ahs stayed with me all of my life...I found it amazing and the best book I ever read....I am now a Biology Teacher and I tell my students about this book every year...I try to keep it alive in my own way...

Food for thought

It has been a few years since I have read this novel; however, I remember its message as though I read it today. This novel not only explores what the life of a clone would be like (in this case, the clone is made from tissue from John F. Kennedy), but it also explores the moral issues our society is just now starting to deal with. Is it right to clone; can the clone live up to the success of the original; can we expect the clone to behave the same as the original; can our society accept clones into its ranks? I found myself turning page after page to find out of the new JFK would meet the same standards as the original.
As a psychology teacher I wish I could have a class set and make my students read this. What we are really talking about here is the whole nature vs. nurture debate. Is who we are programmed in our genetics and chemical processes or are we just a product of our environment? Maybe a mixture of both? I could also see how this would be helpful in philosophy classes. I can't believe this is out of print!

Good book

I just found this on Amazon's Marketplace and am sooooo glad I did! It was (and still is) a great book for its time! I first read it when I was 14, and remembering being blown away. Now that cloning is a reality it won't be as shocking, yet it will "recapture" my youth's memory. And for all you negators out there, be more forgiving... It was the '70's, after all!
