A unique rendition of the Nativity story

Fine's language is magical. She's included sensory details, universal feelings, humor, and strong characterization in the form of her cranky cricket in the stable that night. Her unique rendition of this age-old story is a "must" for holiday gifts for children; adults will love it, too. Winslow Pels's illustrations are stunning, right down to the donkey's eyelashes.

Rhythmic Holiday Celebration

A grumpy little cricket just wants to sleep but there is no peace in the stable and the bright star is shinning in his eyes. "Such light. Such Noise. Is there no peace?" Just when he thinks he has found some quiet, Mary and Joseph arrive with a noisy donkey and then visitors arrive.

A shepherd girl scoops up the cricket and holds him high above the crowd so he can see the baby in the manger. Once he has a view he becomes interested in the angels and manger scene. He is so impressed that he decides to sing a song for the baby Jesus, only he can't quite manage more than a "Gar-Reech" because that has been his tune for so long.

Finally he manages to create a "Chirrr-rup Chirrr-rup" and feels he has
become part of the celebration.

Winslow Pels' illustrations fill each page with seasonal beauty in subtle shades of blues, reds and brown with sand-tone backgrounds. Edith Hope Fine's words dance and jump from the page in cricket sounds mingling with the tale of Jesus' birth.

A memorable story with a change in perspective near the end. It shows children that things are not always as they appear and miracles can even be found in seeming chaos.

K-Gr 2—One might suppose that this title is a riff on the cumulative rhyme of a similar name. Jack has built a tree house and is visited by a fly, lizard, and parrot, each dutifully invoked as the verse grows longer. Verburg has not left it at that, however. By the fourth page turn, she has inserted extra text. Readers are suddenly informed that Jack has assembled swings, a ladder, and a birdbath in the tree, but those real-estate enhancements are never mentioned again. The gathering of animals continues until the youngster declares it's storytime, reads a copy of this book aloud, watches the sunset, and just about everyone goes to bed. It's difficult to see the point of all this. Jack's tree appears to be a banyan, and most of the animals are tropical. The detail in Teague's color-saturated acrylics varies from one animal to the next. The frilled lizard's head is appropriately scaly, but the monkeys are far more cartoony. Jack, himself, is a redhead with a tabby cat and a shaggy sheepdog for pets. He has built a fantastic construction of ladders, knotted swinging vines, thatched-roofed platforms, balconies, and swinging bridges into the trunk and boughs of a giant jungle tree. Verburg’s enjoyable text is perfectly paced as she introduces a grinning fly that is snapped at by a lizard that is pecked at by a parrot that is in turn swatted by a cat . . . until all the animals are brought up short by Jack’s ringing of a bell. It announces storytime, and then Good night to all the things Jack made, as he goes to sleep in his treetop hammock. Each acrylic spread is alive with brilliant colors and delightful pop-up-in-your-face figures, and imaginative details abound throughout: ingenious pulleys that lift pineapples, a fan operated by a bunny using a foot treadle, and a cascading triple birdbath. One cool tree house and a fantastic picture book!

Excellent rhyming adventure and bedtime book. Jack shares his own little world with creatures great and small. Quick read with useful repetition for young readers. First half is fast-paced and transitions to bedtime mode when Jack reads his story to the animals. Great illustrations contain lots of inventions and animals for children to look at and parents to discuss off-story. We got it as a library book this week, but it will be in cart soon. My two and four year old have asked for multiple readings. I'd like to visit Jack's amazing tree house myself!

Beautifully Written Book!

I loved this book...especially the end. It is sweet and easy to read, and very calming for bedtime. My four year old wanted to talk about all the animals after we finished reading it! I would read this all the time. Highly recommend!

First Dear Canada book I've read

When I was a young girl I was so in love with the Dear America books (and its branch off of The Royal Diaries). Earlier this year I discovered that the series expanded beyond the original American series to Canada with the Dear Canada series. I thought this was so cool and I have so far ended up buying four so far, with plans to obtain even more.

This first volume I've completed "The Death of My Country" brought back the wonderful memories of my girlhood when I used to devour these types of books I'd checked out of the library. Now that I live so very close to Canada, the Dear Canada books provide an easy first lesson on the history of Canada. In this volume, Genevieve Aubuchon, tells the story of her and her surroundings as the French and Indian War (or the Sevens Year War as the British call it) comes to her doorstop. Genevieve, of Native American descent raised by French settlers, is found in the middle of this war, on the side of the French but having to survive as a conquered people when the British eventually take all of Canada. The entries are touching and the details given are wonderful, as in all the other Dear America/Royal Diary books I've read before.

The numerous authors that write these three different diary series really immerse the reader into the time and place. The young girls who write in their diaries could be any number of people that lived in the turbulent times in these early nations histories. So many people kept journals back then (probably way more than they do today) so they give us present day folks the perspective we too often forget or plainly ignore. These journals, though works of fiction, provide the best history lesson, since history is being recorded by the observer who is experiencing it. I'm so happy to have found these books and I plan on collecting and reading many more of these, as well as the Dear America and Royal Diary series. I will hang onto them forever, hoping my own daughter(s) may enjoy them as much as I have so far.

An excellent Dear Canada book.

This book is one of the Dear Canada series, which are historical novels, written in diary format, about fictional girls during different periods of Canadian history.
When Genevieve was about five years old, she and her older brother, Chegual, were the sole survivors of a raid on their Abenaki village. They were rescued and brought to Quebec, where they were taken in by a childless couple, the apothecary and his wife. Not long after the apothecary died, but his wife, Madame Claire, continued to raise the children. Genevieve eventually became more French than Abenaki following her education by the nuns, but her brother never adjusted and eventually left. Now Genevieve is twelve and the year is 1759. She continues to live in Quebec with her adoptive mother, Madame Claire. A war rages between France and England over control of some of the North American colonies, and Genevieve finds her peaceful life changing in many ways when the city of Quebec is put under siege by the British. Her brother returns to the city with his best friend, only for them to go off to battle to defend Quebec with other Indian allies.
This was one of the best books in the Dear Canada series. Although it was very sad at times, it was also hopeful. Genevieve was an interesting character - part French, part Abenaki, but fully neither. She was able to give a unique view of the French and Indian War. I'd definitely recommend this book to readers who enjoyed other Dear Canada books.

The three seventh graders go with their class to an exhibit of Alexander Calder's mobiles at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Soon after, Calder and his father travel to a remote village in England that has an anonymously donated Calder sculpture, the Minotaur, and a maze at Blenheim Park. Both the boy and the sculpture disappear on the same night. Balliett's love of words and her ability to tuck hidden, subtle clues into her story are evident throughout. Petra and Tommy fly to England to help Calder's dad and the police find their friend. The kids see mobiles everywhere: in the leaves, flying crows, paper trash. Indeed, the whole story is structured as a mobile, with plot and characters twisting and turning, moving and dancing around each other. The young sleuths are able to take what seems to be chance and coincidence and apply their own conclusions to the puzzle wrapped inside this mystery. Balliett's wonderful writing is full of foreshadowing, literary allusions, wordplay, and figurative language. Calder's signature yellow pentominoes play an important role, and the kids create a new code. Helquist's detailed illustrations enhance this multilayered story. mobiles, mazes, and minotaurs

The gang is all back, Calder, Tommy, and Petra, ready for another mystery to solve. It's the same formula with a different setting (England) and a different artist (Alexander Calder). But the three kids are finding balance between themselves, kind of like the mobiles that they all find so fascinating.

If you enjoyed "Chasing Vermeer" and "The Wright 3", this is a must read. In all three of her books, Blue Balliett does a great job of making artists interesting to kids that may not otherwise have an interest in art. (Adults too! I'm inspired to go see the Alexander Calder exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.) It's also a great message about how differences can be cool and art can change people, if they just let it in.

The only thing that bothered me is that the kids were able to get a passport in one day. (It took 8 weeks to get mine!) That just wouldn't be possible in our day and age. But it's just a small detail.

Educational but filled with poor life lessons...

I listened to the audio-book with my 8 and 11 year olds. The long car ride kept us listening until the end.

PROS - We all learned about Alexander Calder's art and enjoyed the art ties to Banksy. The British history and geography (US and UK) woven into the story inspired fun conversations, too. Although the author reaches a bit far trying to describe the thoughts of the characters (particularly the way they "analyze" the world through really intricate patterns that they notice), Balliett gives readers a new prism with which to view the world.

CONS - Many elements of the story are unrealistic -- that's not a problem in and of itself. I remember the joys of feeling empowered above my years when I was a kid! However, there are a few elements that are just plain dangerous.

- Caulder (the main character) travels to England with his dad. While dad attends a multi-day conference, he tells his son to explore the city until he comes home around 5pm. REALLY? Caulder has a series of discomforting 'culture-shock' encounters. Within three days he decides to meet up and go someplace with a stranger. He leaves a short note for his dad with no information, except to tell his dad to not wait up for him. YIKES. Perhaps readers are supposed to identify that this decision is counter to the "don't go places with strangers" life lesson, but the danger and folly of this decision are never discussed. Caulder's fate is the cliff-hanger of the entire story.

- After Caulder is missing for a few days, his two best friends arrive in England to help look for him. They are accompanied by a woman who is a friend of their teacher. Really? A child is missing and these kids' parents allow their children to travel to a foreign country with a virtual stranger to go look for their friend who is possibly kidnapped or worse? (Who paid for the tickets, by the way?) The chaperone then allows the two friends (also 12 years old) to go off on their own under these suspicious circumstances. REALLY? I was floored at the irresponsible parents and adults (who are all educators) portrayed in this story.

This book peaked our curiosity for the art world, but we had to pause the story to talk about the layers of bad judgment and irresponsibility. Fantasy is good in a clear fantasy context; this book is problematic because the clearly irresponsible/dangerous decisions are incorporated so innocuously. Many kids are easily influenced and like to emulate book characters. Read this book, but be sure your kids understand what NOT to do....

Calder, Tommy, and Petra are back for another art-filled mystery.

It all starts when they take a field trip to the art museum to see the new exhibit featuring work by Alexander Calder. Even though their nasty and fun-sucking teacher tries to make the trip as miserable as possible, the three friends manage to find great inspiration and fascination in Alexander Calder's work.

Before long, Calder's dad invites him on a trip to England with him. Calder is super excited about the opportunity and learns that the town they're staying in is home to one of Alexander Calder's sculptures, The Minotaur. When Calder and his dad arrive in the small town, they find that not everyone is as excited about the sculpture as Calder is -- and quite a few people want it gone.

While Calder's dad is off at his seminars all day, Calder starts exploring the town and even goes to the famous Blenheim Palace gardens and maze. This is the ultimate place for Calder as he loves puzzles and mazes. One night, though, both Calder and the sculpture go missing.....a coincidence... maybe? When Calder doesn't show up after a couple of nights, his worry-stricken father brings in some back-up, Petra and Tommy. Together they will try and solve the mystery of where Calder is and what happened to the sculpture.

As always, Blue Balliett has created an intricately woven story which takes art, mystery, and friendship and turns it into one heck of a book. What's especially nice about THE CALDER GAME is that you don't necessarily have to have read the other books in the series (CHASING VERMEER and THE WRIGHT 3) to understand what's going on; while it would be nice, this story is complete on its own.

While I really liked this book, I'm not sure it was quite as good as the first, which often happens, but it was still really good. I liked all of the twists and turns in the mystery and it was fun trying to figure out what happened. I loved the underlying art theme, which made the book very interesting. I definitely think that it takes a certain type of person to want to read this book, as there is a lot of art talk, which I love, but others may not. All in all, I really enjoyed THE CALDER GAME and look forward to more in the series.

One last note! The illustrations in this book, while sparse, were incredible. I thought they really added to the story and I loved them.

Lacking are a bibliography and a notes section. Excellent black-and-white illustrations complement the text. Devoted to the South, John Wilkes Booth had planned to kidnap Lincoln and hold him hostage, but when that plan did not materialize, he hatched his assassination plot. Co-conspirators in Washington, Maryland, and Virginia helped him escape and evade capture for 12 days before being surrounded in a barn and killed. Readers will be engrossed by the almost hour-by-hour search and by the many people who encountered the killer as he tried to escape. It is a tale of intrigue and an engrossing mystery. Six Stars for This Book!

If any historical account for youth should get six stars, it is *Chasing Lincoln's Killer* by James Swanson. Written for ages 12 and up, this book moves at a quick pace and is chock-full of details that I had never seen before, my introduction to the subject having been a *You Are There* account of John Wilkes Booth by Walter Cronkite in the 1950s. Teachers, students, and homeschoolers will find this a valuable illustrated resource. Swanson has done a great job of making this historical account read like a novel. It includes dialogue, but all words and sentences in quotation marks are the actual words of eyewitnesses and participants whose works served as primary sources for this book. Atmosphere is included, but only that which would be apparent to a writer who put himself into the scene to imagine it. For example, the smells inside Surratt's tavern are listed as "wax, candles, oil lamps, tobacco, burning stove wood, whiskey, dirty clothes, and leather boots"--realistic details that help readers to place themselves in the company of the fleeing Booth and co-conspirator David Herold. Another plus is that Swanson does not take cheap shots at Mary Todd Lincoln or Boston Corbett, whose personal quirks are often used as grist for writers about Lincoln. Published by Scholastic Press, the book has ancillaries including a reading group activity guide, an educational poster, and downloadable activities on the publisher's web site. This book will grab the attention of any reader and spark interest in this great historical event. I myself am motivated now to read Swanson's New York Times bestseller, *Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer* on which *Chasing Lincoln's Killer* is based.

History comes alive in a book which reads like a novel

"Chasing Lincoln's Killer" is an adaptation of James L. Swanson's book "Manhunt" for young adults. Although I am far from a young adult, I enjoyed it so much I ordered the adult version.

As we all learned in basic history class, Abraham Lincoln was shot at the Ford Theater by John Wilkes Booth. What I (and I daresay many others) didn't know was there was a significant conspiracy to take down the entire government which was also supposed to happen that fateful evening. The author explains this in such a fascinating way it reads like a novel. Then, after the assisination the hunt is on for Booth and the others.

This book is listed for ages twelve and up and I would heed that as there are someone graphic depictions of the wounds suffered by Lincoln and their subsequent treatment.

I have loved this series for a very long time, and I continue to do so! I am a bit upset that this series has ended, because these books mean a lot to me. In the final installment of the Children of the Red King series, Count Harken returns. I don't want to give it all away; you have to read it! The only thing was that I felt the ending was a little bit rushed. When I got to the end (in like 1 1/2 hours or so...I was excited), I was like "Oh, that's it?" I guess I was just expecting a bit more in the end. Otherwise, this book is great!

Charlie Bone and the Red Knight

I have read this series, because I am giving them to my Grandson for Christmas. I found the ALL very entertaining and I think any child to adult would love them. This one is the final book in the series of the Red King. It needed to wrap-up the story line and did a very excellent job.

I would recommend this book for everyone .... boys and girls children to adults. (easy reading)

Up Until the End

I was in love with this book. It was everything I wanted the final Charlie Bone book to be. Up until the end. Up until the very last chapter. Up until the very last sentence. Up until the very unsatisfactory ending. Don't get me wrong. The book is great. But all the ending does is to leave you wanting for more, which is a VERY bad thing to do, considering that this is THE FINAL BOOK. So yes, the only reason I am giving this book 3 stars instead of 5 is because of the ending. The ending of the ending. :(
